This diversity of perceptions reflects the enduring challenge of defining and discussing the topic. Hakim Adi begins Pan-Africanism: A History by employing a broad understanding of the term as an ideology and the movements it catalyzed. He writes that Pan-Africanism is “the striving for the unity and liberation of Africa and Africans” (p. 221). According to Adi, a single, universally accepted definition has never existed. He goes further, determining that the hazards of pinning some authors down to a definitive meaning stem from the reality that Pan-Africanism has assumed so many different forms over time and space (p. 2). Adi’s conception of its protean and enduring nature dovetails with the central framing of the Routledge Handbook of Pan-Africanism, which is edited by University of Colorado, Boulder Professor of African, African American, and Caribbean Studies, Reiland Rabaka, and contains multiple, adaptable meanings. Both books address the critical need to formulate a clear, concise definition of Pan-Africanism. They also wrestle with conceptions like Ashley D. Farmer’s. A specialist in Black women’s intellectual history, Farmer writes, “the destruction of racism, capitalism, sexism, and homophobia will not come from a uniform idea but rather from the recognition and implementation of the array of political imaginings that those fighting oppression develop.”1 Adi and Rabaka deliberate on several interrelated issues in delineating Pan-Africanism. They examine its durability and","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"177 - 185"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45656483","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Marie, Ontario) and Robert Nolan (Anishinaabe, Batchewana First Nation, Ketegaunseebee/Garden River, Ontario) worked with the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, specifically with one of its employees, Robert Bell, a settler of Scottish descent. Miron and Nolan were two of the many Indigenous Peoples who shared their expertise, knowledge, skills, technologies, maps, and travel routes with Bell as he endeavoured to explore the northern half of North America for the GSC. However, in his published reports, Bell evaded acknowledgment of the many contributions made by Indigenous Peoples, despite the dependency of his work upon them. Nevertheless, by attending to silences in colonial archives and reading between the lines of the GSC’s sources, Indigenous stories can be uncovered and reclaimed from the narratives constructed by White explorers. What Miron, Nolan, and so many other Indigenous people shared with Bell, as well as what he took from them without consent, was based on rich geographic and geological knowledge that predated the GSC by thousands of years. Indeed, the significance and brilliance of Indigenous knowledge permeates the records of the Geological Survey, including those written by Bell, and defied colonial attempts to erase or deny it.Abstract:Raymond Miron (Anishinaabe et français, Bawaating/Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) et Robert Nolan (Anishinaabe, Première Nation des Batchewanas, Ketegaunseebee/Garden River, Ontario) ont travaillé avec la Commission géologique du Canada (CGC) à la fin du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle, plus particulièrement avec l’un de ses employés, Robert Bell, un colon d’origine écossaise. Miron et Nolan sont deux des nombreux Amérindiens qui ont partagé leur expertise, leurs connaissances, leurs compétences, leurs technologies, leurs cartes et leurs voies de passage avec Bell, alors qu’il entreprenait d’explorer une partie des régions nordiques de l’Amérique du Nord pour le compte de la CGC. Cependant, dans les rapports qu’il a publiés, Bell omet de reconnaître les nombreuses contributions des peuples autochtones, bien que son travail soit tributaire de ces derniers. Néanmoins, en s’intéressant aux silences des archives coloniales et en lisant entre les lignes dans les sources de la CGC, il est possible de mettre au jour des histoires autochtones et de les récupérer à partir des récits construits par les explorateurs Blancs. Ce que Miron, Nolan et tant d’autres peuples autochtones ont partagé avec Bell, et ce que ce dernier leur a pris sans leur consentement, reposait sur un savoir géographique et géologique riche, précédant de plusieurs milliers d’années les travaux de la CGC. En effet, l’importance et le génie du savoir autochtone sont omniprésents dans les documents de la Commission géologique, y compris ceux rédigés par Bell, et font échec aux tentatives coloniales qui visaient à les","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"122 - 93"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41872523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Soon, other outside communities including legal teams, Indigenous women’s organizations, prison justice advocates, feminists, and anarchists got involved as well. Using the Kent incident in 1983 as a launch point, this article considers how and why Indigenous spirituality became such a significant factor in shaping prison activism in these years. We suggest that Indigenous spirituality had the power to draw together and focus a wide range of political activism rooted in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. What happened at Kent was a continuation of social movement activism that stretched back to the 1960s. Understanding those connections not only explains why the events took place at Kent as they did, but also helps to bring into focus a wider cast of characters who were involved in furthering activism around Indigenous spirituality.Abstract:À la mi-mars 1983, deux hommes autochtones ont entamé un jeûne spirituel à la prison de Kent, située près d’Agassiz en Colombie-Britannique, en guise de protestation contre le refus de la prison de leur donner accès à des objets importants liés à leur spiritualité. Rapidement, des communautés externes, y compris des équipes juridiques, des organismes de femmes autochtones, des défenseurs de la justice carcérale, des féministes et des anarchistes se sont également mobilisés. En utilisant l’incident de Kent en 1983 comme un catalyseur, cet article examine comment et pourquoi la spiritualité des Autochtones est devenue un facteur si déterminant de l’activisme carcéral au cours de ces années. Nous soutenons qu’elle avait la capacité de rassembler et de canaliser un large éventail d’activismes politiques issus des communautés autochtones et non autochtones. Les événements survenus à Kent s’inscrivent ainsi dans la continuité de l’activisme lié aux mouvements sociaux qui remontent aux années 1960. Une meilleure compréhension de ces liens permet non seulement d’expliquer le déroulement des événements à Kent, mais aussi de jeter un éclairage sur l’ensemble des personnages qui ont participé à la promotion de l’activisme en faveur de la spiritualité autochtone.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"149 - 175"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42801677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For instance, he notes how Ontario’s forests are now managed for a host of values, particularly ecological ones, the local rivers and lakes have seen major improvements in terms of their water quality, and better management of the fisheries has caused populations to rebound, even if the formerly world-renowned sturgeon fishery is a mere fraction of what it once was. He also describes the world-class research on water quality that is being conducted in the Experimental Lakes Area. As a result, he suggests that his story could potentially serve as a valuable lesson in shaping future policies in situations that are plagued by equally tangled webs of interests. As he puts it, “new environmental norms are gradually emerging through a more collaborative approach to water management. This is indeed the promise of the watershed framework as now being explored and elaborated with the Rainy-Lake of the Woods system. It took a long time to find the watershed; let’s try not to lose it” (p. 287).","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"189 - 191"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42313681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
