La tâche n’est donc pas simple pour ces mères qui sont encore aujourd’hui perçues comme piliers de première instance du milieu familial. Or, leur situation précaire est alimentée encore davantage par la statistique selon laquelle les femmes sont moins durement touchées par la schizophrénie que les hommes, puisque diagnostiquées plus tardivement qu’eux, et par l’idée qu’elles seraient de ce fait nettement plus stables qu’eux, socialement et financièrement. L’étude des dossiers médicaux du Département de psychiatrie de l’Hôpital Montfort, à Ottawa, vient toutefois dresser un portrait bien différent en ce qui a trait aux réalités parentales des mères schizophrènes, comme nous le verrons tout au long du présent article.Abstract:Confronted with the difficulties associated with parenthood, mothers with schizophrenia have had to deal with a complex course of psychiatric care as well as the many obstacles inherent to family life. Life is therefore not easy for these mothers, who remain to this day perceived as the primary pillars of the family. Their precarious situation is further fuelled by the statistical assumption that women are less severely affected by schizophrenia than men, since, on the one hand, they are often diagnosed later, and, on the other, because they are therefore viewed as much more stable than men with schizophrenia, both socially and financially. Loin de constituer un bloc uni, les proches ont quelquefois des intérêts et des avis divergents quant à la conduite à tenir vis-à-vis de l’internée ou l’interné. Si les conflits peuvent se cristalliser autour d’enjeux financiers, ils mettent aussi en jeu des lectures profanes de la maladie et des « théories diagnostiques » opposées. En arbitrant ces conflits, les médecins aliénistes participent à la construction des normes familiales et des frontières de la famille légitime au XIXe siècle.Abstract:This article, which is based on an analysis of patient files from several French asylums in the second half of the nineteenth century, explores family disputes that arose during internment. Far from constituting a united front, relatives sometimes had divergent opinions and interests regarding what to do with the internee. While conflicts may have revolved around financial matters, they also reveal lay interpretations and contradictory “diagnostic theories” of the illnesses.
