The majority of Montréal’s rentier families in 1903 were of popular class origins; they were not primarily the descendants of mercantile, seigneurial, or industrial wealth. Their social ascension to controlling a third of all rents accruing to people in this overwhelmingly tenant city was the product of strategies of accumulation that operated over generations. Marriage was a crucial building block of these fortunes.Abstract:Cette analyse des origines sociales des familles rentières de Montréal en 1903 propose une méthodologie pour identifier et sélectionner des familles rentières à partir de noms de famille communs, démontre leur cohérence sociale et historique au fil du temps et réfléchit sur l’importance de la famille pour l’histoire urbaine. La majorité des familles rentières de Montréal en 1903 étaient d’origine populaire; elles n’étaient pas essentiellement issues de la richesse mercantile, seigneuriale ou industrielle. Leur ascension sociale, qui leur a permis de contrôler le tiers des loyers perçus par les habitants de cette ville très majoritairement locataire, a été le fruit de stratégies d’accumulation mises en œuvre sur plusieurs générations. Le mariage constituait un élément de base crucial de ces fortunes.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"91 13","pages":"481 - 490"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41310839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Il vise à déterminer dans quelle mesure les familles élevant un enfant hors normes ont été conceptualisées comme « autres » et marginalisées par un discours biomédical leur faisant porter le poids du handicap. L’analyse démontre qu’en dépit de relations parfois tendues avec les professionnelles et professionnels de la santé, les familles utilisent diverses stratégies de résistance ou d’adaptation pour atténuer leur dépendance par rapport à l’omniprésence de la dimension thérapeutique dans leur parcours.Abstract:Based on a corpus of interviews and social work theses, this article examines the lives of parents of disabled children in Quebec between 1940 and 1960. It aims to determine the extent to which families raising a child with a disability were conceptualized as “Others” and marginalized by a biomedical discourse that placed the burden of disability on them. It argues that despite sometimes strained relationships with health professionals, families used various strategies to resist or adapt, thereby reducing their dependence towards the omnipresence of the therapeutic dimension in their lives.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"54 1","pages":"569 - 589"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43277332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Toutefois, la lecture des procédures judiciaires produites pendant la peste de Marseille en 1720–1722 nuance cette caractéristique. Les comportements face au corps et à la contagion sont multiples, et les habitants mettent en place des tactiques visant à continuer à vivre auprès des pestiférés tout en évitant de contracter la maladie. Si la prise de distance et l’éloignement modifient les sociabilités ordinaires, le soin perdure pendant toute la quarantaine, tant de la part des soignants que de celle des proches des malades.Abstract:Historiography has almost always emphasized the extreme behaviours of populations in times of epidemics, such as terror, flight, and abandonment. A reading of the judicial procedures produced during the plague in Marseille in 1720–1722, however, provides nuance to this characterization. These documents show how people dealt with bodies and the infection in a variety of ways, developing tactics to ensure they could continue living with plague victims while avoiding contracting the disease. Although physical distancing modified ordinary sociability, care continued throughout the quarantine, both on the part of the carers and the relatives of the sick.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"54 1","pages":"529 - 550"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45419993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
