However, while much has been written about how translator Muraoka Hanako adapted L. M. Montgomery's novel to Japanese sensibilities, far less has been written on the wider social, economic, and political factors facilitating this success. Indeed, the Second World War's impact in aiding the Japanese acceptance of Anne should not be underestimated as a factor for its postwar popularity. For policymakers in Charlottetown, Ottawa, and Tokyo during the 1960s, promoting Anne proved to be a mutually beneficial transaction, allowing each to further their postwar domestic policies. This combined promotional effort eventually culminated in the decision to send Anne of Green Gables: The Musical to play at the 1970 Osaka world's fair (Expo '70), setting the stage for mass Japanese tourism to Prince Edward Island during the late twentieth century.Abstract:Aujourd'hui, il est de notoriété publique que le roman Anne of Green Gables est populaire au Japon et que cette popularité a favorisé le tourisme japonais à l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard. Cependant, si on a beaucoup écrit sur la façon dont la traductrice Muraoka Hanako a adapté le roman de L. M. Montgomery à la sensibilité japonaise, on a nettement moins écrit sur les facteurs sociaux, économiques et politiques plus larges qui ont contribué à son succès. En fait, l'impact de la Seconde Guerre mondiale sur la réception japonaise de l'oeuvre ne devrait pas être sous-estimé en tant que facteur expliquant sa popularité dans l'après-guerre. Dans les annés 1960, pour les décideurs politiques de Charlottetown, d'Ottawa et de Tokyo, la promotion d'Anne s'est avérée une transaction bénéfique à tous, permettant à chacun de faire avancer sa politique intérieure d'après-guerre. Cet effort promotionnel collectif a éventuellement atteint son apogée avec la décision d'envoyer Anne of Green Gables: The Musical à l'exposition universelle d'Osaka en 1970 (Expo '70), préparant ainsi la voie au tourisme de masse japonais à l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard à la fin du XXe siècle.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"55 1","pages":"119 - 144"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44975526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Brouwer","doi":"10.1353/his.2022.0004","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/his.2022.0004","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:It was not uncommon for a First World War veteran suffering the traumas of the wartime experience to take his own life. The case of George Emerson Compton, however, who fatally shot himself in 1932, poses some complexity. His war service record and pension files and research related to his unusual personal and familial background on Prince Edward Island raise the question of whether Compton's suicide was attributable to personal problems, including mental instability that predated his wartime service, as state officials claimed in dismissing his pension claims, or to wartime and post-war trauma. Relevant secondary literature in military and social history and suicide studies provides support and context for acknowledging that these are not mutually exclusive explanations. Compton's Depression-era experience with the military's doctors and pension officials brought him to a tipping point, but a long and complex personal background lay behind his decision to end his own life.Abstract:Il n'était pas rare qu'un ancien combattant de la Première Guerre mondiale souffrant des traumatismes de l'expérience de la guerre mette un terme à sa vie. Le cas de George Emerson Compton, qui s'est tiré une balle mortelle en 1932, présente toutefois une certaine complexité. Ses dossiers de service militaire et de pension, ainsi que les recherches liées à ses antécédents personnels et familiaux anormaux à l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard, soulèvent la question à savoir si son suicide était attribuable à des problèmes personnels, y compris une instabilité mentale qui existait avant son service de guerre, comme l'ont prétendu les fonctionnaires de l'État en rejetant ses demandes de pension, ou s'il était plutôt lié à un traumatisme de guerre et d'après-guerre. La littérature secondaire pertinente en matière d'histoire militaire et sociale et d'études sur le suicide, fournit un appui et un contexte pour admettre que ces explications ne sont pas exclusives les unes des autres. À l'époque de la Grande Dépression, l'expérience de Compton avec les médecins et les responsables des pensions de l'armée l'a amené à un point de nonretour, mais sa décision de mettre fin à ses jours repose sur une histoire personnelle longue et complexe.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"55 1","pages":"117 - 95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45167772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dès son origine, le phénomène navétane se révèle être un mouvement de contestation politique du pouvoir gouvernemental par la jeunesse. Cette étude montre de quelle manière s'opèrent, à travers les colonnes des quotidiens généralistes sénégalais, une dynamique et une influence mutuelles entre football « navétane » considéré comme « sauvage », et football conventionnel dit « élite », aboutissant à un métissage des deux formes de pratiques footballistiques. L'étude met en exergue les processus de créolisation et de re-sportivisation dont les grands quotidiens sénégalais se font l'écho.Abstract:During the rainy season and school vacation, Senegalese youth have regularly participated in informal \"balls on the margins\" tournaments and other sociocultural activities between cities, towns, and neighboorhoods—known as \"navétanes.\" Since its conception in the mid-twentieth century, the navétane phenomenon has been a movement whereby government power could be contested. Through an analysis of the major Senegalese daily newspapers, this study shows how a mutual dynamic and influence took place between navétane football—considered \"savage\"—and conventional football—considered elite—which lead both forms to blend, further highlighting how the papers echoed processes of creolization and resportivisation.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"55 1","pages":"145 - 169"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44368942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
