Thomas Lützkendorf","doi":"10.1002/bate.70150","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1002/bate.70150","url":null,"abstract":"<p><b>Life cycle assessment in the design stage – From a scientific approach to a practical tool</b></p><p>Requirements for the assessment and disclosure of environmentally relevant information on buildings using methods of applied life cycle assessment will become a legal requirement in the near future. Starting in 2028, greenhouse gas emissions in the life cycle must be calculated and reported as global warming potential. This is one of the impact categories included in the list of core indicators of a life cycle assessment. Whereas experience in determining the global warming potential and, in some cases, other potential environmental impacts has so far been limited to isolated applications, for example in sustainability assessment, applications for funding, or the EU taxonomy, design and construction practice, in particular the designers and engineers, will from then on be confronted with this topic. The groundwork is currently being laid. This applies to the formulation of legal requirements, the further development of the relevant standards, the provision of data, guidance, and tools, as well as the expansion of opportunities for further training. In this context, this paper presents the fundamentals of life cycle assessment, the current status of standardisation with regard to DIN EN 15978:2026 and DIN SPEC 91606:2026, as well as relevant questions that can be addressed by means of life cycle assessment. The barrage serves to secure the Oste's outflow, ensures shipping traffic between the Oste and the Outer Elbe, and fulfills the tasks of dyke and storm surge protection. The structure consists of four weir fields with mechanically driven segment gates and a central shipping opening with hydraulically operated stem gates. A prestressed concrete bridge runs over the barrage, which is designed as a double bascule bridge over the shipping opening. The structure was built as a result of the storm surge of 1962 and went into operation in 1968. During the structural inspection, safety-relevant corrosion damage was found on the tension anchors of the pivot bearings of the segment gates. As a result of many years of exposure to salt and brackish water, this has led to a weakening of the cross-section and impairs the stability under tensile stress, especially at elevated inland water levels or ice loads.The WSA Elbe-Nordsee commissioned the WNA Magdeburg with the repair work, including the necessary drainage of the weir fields. Due to the importance of the facility, the Oste Barrage was included in the list of system-critical structures. In the course of DB's privatisation, a more economically driven use of the rail network was implemented, along with the decommissioning of less frequented sections. Concurrently, the redistribution of train services enabled a more efficient use of the remaining routes. This, in turn, led to a significant increase in overall track utilisation. Consequently, these utilisation figures allow the determination of load tons, the actual transported weight, and the number of axle crossings over structural components of the railway infrastructure. The present study is therefore based on the analysis of real data on track utilisation. The objective of the present study is twofold: first, to derive reliable load cycle numbers, and second, to develop forecasts for future loads. These numbers and forecasts can then be compared to existing design methods for infrastructure components. The work commences with an introduction and a presentation of the underlying data in the initial two chapters. The third chapter delineates the pertinent influencing factors and boundary conditions. In the fourth chapter, a comprehensive evaluation of the collected data is presented. To support this, a Building Information Model (BIM) with temporal information (4D-BIM) is used to accurately reflect the actual state of the site. This paper presents a methodology based on lean principles that integrates event-driven, drone-assisted data acquisition. Critical surfaces in terms of the construction process in the 4D-BIM are abstracted and compared with reconstructed surfaces derived from point clouds of the construction site. Integrating these results into the 4D-BIM enables automated progress monitoring and provides a reliable basis for decision-making. Validation through a bridge construction project demonstrates practical applicability: despite challenges such as wind and occluded components, the critical surface was reconstructed within defined tolerances. The methodology is particularly suitable for infrastructure projects in open environments and can be combined with various sensing technologies. This article describes the development of heap material into a low-CO<sub>2</sub> cement substitute and concrete additive. It includes the results of initial exploratory investigations, initial industrial trials in the context of cement production, and the results of further development of the waste material as an additive for concrete applications. The results highlight the potential of the material to reduce the carbon footprint of cement and concrete, and to specifically improve the material properties of concrete.
