PPD symptoms were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). BFP patterns were characterized using longitudinal clusters based on milk volume (dose-to-mother technique), feeding frequency/duration, and age at complementary food introduction (CFI). PPD trajectories were identified using growth mixture modeling, and classes were selected based on AIC/BIC. Multinomial logistic regression assessed associations with BFP.

Results: Two PPD symptom trajectories were identified. The \"Lower Score\" (87%) indicated PPD stability throughout follow-up, while the \"Higher Score\" (12%) showed more transitions, mainly to PPD remission in later stages. Three breastfeeding clusters (C) were identified. C1 with moderate volume/frequency with later CFI (n=37; 38%); C2 with lower volume/frequency with intermediate CFI (n=34; 35%); and C3 with higher volume/frequency with earlier CFI (n=26; 27%). Women with higher PPD symptoms showed a trend toward significance in being associated with C3 (OR=4.17; 95%CI: 0.96-18.50; p=0.055) compared with C1.

Conclusions: Although the association between higher PPD symptoms and less favorable breastfeeding practices presented only a trend toward significance, it suggests that PPD symptoms may influence breastfeeding behaviors. Larger samples are needed to confirm these findings, and the use of diagnostic tools other than EPDS, a screening tool, may strengthen future studies. Clinically, the findings underscore the need for early PPD screening in primary care and stronger breastfeeding support.
","PeriodicalId":520767,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de psiquiatria (Sao Paulo, Brazil : 1999)","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"146134019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This phenomenon may arise from the perpetuation of stereotypes, the association of mental disorders with violent conduct, or the use of a diagnosis in a metaphorical application within text, often as an adjective. This study examined how Brazilian newspapers used schizophrenia (and its derivatives with the root schiz*) over time: as a metaphor or a non-metaphor. A database of news articles was compiled from 2001 to 2022. A multilayer neural network model with 95% accuracy was trained to categorize the use of schizophrenia and its derivatives as either metaphorical or non-metaphorical. A total of three national newspapers in Brazil were included in the analysis. From January 2001 to August 2022, a total of 7,272 texts were extracted. Of the total number of texts, 30.8% (2243) were identified as using schizophrenia and similar words in metaphorical language. There is no evidence of a significant increase or decrease in metaphorical use over the years, indicating that representations of schizophrenia in media discourse have persisted over time.
","PeriodicalId":520767,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de psiquiatria (Sao Paulo, Brazil : 1999)","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"146014181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The global prevalence of bipolar disorder is estimated to be between 1% and 2%, not accounting for underdiagnosis. Given the importance of this condition and its management, we aimed to review the evidence as to whether mobile apps facilitate the management of bipolar disorder. Searches in PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus databases identified 33 studies, including 19 longitudinal studies, 11 cross-sectional studies, and two mixed-methods studies. We conclude that acceptance of mobile apps among health care professionals seems to depend on their reliability and efficient integration into the workflow. Patients are showing increasing interest in mobile apps for managing bipolar disorder, although digital literacy, economic limitations, and privacy and accessibility concerns still limit long-term adherence. In related research, methodological challenges, such as small sample sizes and the need for more robust study designs, indicate gaps in validating their effectiveness. When developing these apps, software companies need stronger scientific grounding, which shows the importance of collaboration among researchers, health care professionals, and industry to ensure that tools meet clinical demands.
","PeriodicalId":520767,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de psiquiatria (Sao Paulo, Brazil : 1999)","volume":" ","pages":"e20254253"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144986994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
