En s’inspirant de l’etude de Gruter et Crago (2012), nous avons realise une experience de production ainsi qu’un test de memoire de travail avec deux groupes d’apprenants dont la L1 est respectivement l’allemand et le chinois mandarin. Un groupe de locuteurs natifs du francais a ete inclus egalement en tant que groupe de controle. Notre experience permet d’approfondir la recherche sur les pronoms objets notamment en regardant leur maitrise par les apprenants dans differents contextes et selon differents types de verbes. Les resultats montrent le meme pattern pour les deux groupes d’apprenants. Egalement, on constate que les pronoms objets semblent etre mieux maitrises dans les contextes appropries que les reflechis, que ce soit pour le groupe allemand ou le groupe chinois, ce qui indiquerait une difficulte specifique de cette forme. {"title":"Accessibility and Referential Choice: Personal Pronouns and D-pronouns in Written German","authors":"Yvonne Portele, M. Bader","doi":"10.4000/DISCOURS.9188","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4000/DISCOURS.9188","url":null,"abstract":"We present a corpus study and a production experiment that investigated the choice between two types of pronouns in written German – personal pronouns and so-called d-pronouns, which have properties of both personal and demonstrative pronouns. The existing research concerned with these pronouns has focused on language comprehension, in particular with regard to interpretative preferences in the case of referential ambiguity. In contrast to language comprehension, a choice between the two pronominal forms has to be made during language production whether there is an ambiguity or not. The corpus data show that the choice between p(ersonal) pronoun and d-pronoun depends on several factors that have been claimed to determine a referent’s accessibility (Ariel, 1990), in particular givenness and syntactic prominence (syntactic function and clausal position). The corpus study is supplemented by a production experiment that required participants to continue a short text passage with a sentence starting with either a p-pronoun or a d-pronoun. The results of the experiment strengthen the conclusion that several factors determine accessibility which in turn governs pronoun choice. {"title":"The Role of Discourse Prominence in Antecedent Search: The Case of Genitive Noun Phrases","authors":"S. Prior research suggested that during the search for an antecedent, readers consider only those preceding discourse entities that are prominent in the discourse; thus, genitive NPs would not be considered because they lack discourse prominence (Badecker & Straub, 2002). Two reading experiments tested this claim. In Experiment 1, genitive NPs were noun descriptions that were strongly stereotyped for gender (e.g., “The executive’s/secretary’s father cut himself…”). In Experiment 2, genitive NPs were gender-specific proper names (e.g., “John’s/Mary’s father cut himself…”), similar to those used in the prior research. {"title":"Referential Choices and Specific Language Impairment: Sensitivity to Contrast Levels and Grammatical Role","authors":"Maja Stegenwallner-Schütz, F. Adani","doi":"10.4000/DISCOURS.9179","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4000/DISCOURS.9179","url":null,"abstract":"Speakers’ referential choices differ in the degree of explicitness, ranging from very explicit expressions (such as lexical NPs, e.g., the boy) to less explicit expressions (such as pronouns, e.g., he, and null elements). We examine the referential choices of children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI), in order to differentiate between the linguistic and pragmatic abilities involved in the selection of appropriate referring expressions. Existing findings on referential choices by children with SLI are currently inconsistent and have mainly been reported based on narratives. We used an elicited production task to manipulate the referent’s accessibility by means of two factors: (a) contexts that instantiate different levels of contrast (one vs. two contrasts) and (b) the grammatical role of the expression (subject vs. object). We show that children with SLI and typically developing controls produce more explicit expressions for increased contrast levels and for objects than for subjects. Although children with SLI modify the explicitness of their referring expressions according to the accessibility of referents as typically developing children do, we also find varying production rates between the groups. Une tâche d’imitation, et deux tâches donnant lieu a la production de deux types de discours, un discours minimal constitue d’un enonce sollicite par une question ciblee, et un discours long issu d’une tâche verbale complexe. Les apprenants etudies (17 sujets) sont des francophones qui ont suivi le meme cours de polonais d’une duree totale de 14 heures. Nous analysons a la fois l’impact de l’input recu par les apprenants lors des cours et l’influence du type d’activite sur la production et l’acquisition de la morphologie nominale en polonais. Nos resultats montrent qu’en fonction de la tâche, la production de formes nominales correctement flechies varie, et que les caracteristiques de l’input recu ne jouent pas le meme role dans la production des formes correctes selon la tâche. Plus la tâche est ciblee plus les caracteristiques de l’input jouent un role important et plus les productions des apprenants sont correctes en ce qui concerne le marquage casuel. Les productions issues de la tâche semi-guidee semblent dependre davantage des contraintes communicatives et non pas des contraintes formelles. Il apparait que cette locution marque fondamentalement un retour a un topique de discours (Van Dijk, 1976 ; Charolles, 2003) apres ce qu’on peut appeler « une sequence intercalee » comportant generalement l’expression d’une incertitude, ou d’une ignorance, mais pouvant egalement correspondre a une simple digression. Nous montrons alors comment le fonctionnement pragmatique de toujours est-il que prend son origine dans sa structure syntactico-semantique, et s’explique notamment a partir de la valeur de persistance de toujours transposee sur l’axe de dicto (Martin, 1987). A cet egard, on cherchera a distinguer, a l’instar d’Ehlich (1982), les procedures indexicales que sont la deixis, l’« anadeixis » et l’anaphore, et a preciser leurs fonctions discursives respectives. Chacune de ces procedures indexicales est specialisee dans la realisation de telle ou telle fonction de structuration et d’integration du discours qui peut etre associe a un texte quelconque, par le biais d’un contexte approprie. L’anaphore, elle, a partie liee avec les relations rhetoriques qui, de facon semblable, structurent le discours. Notre travail se demarque des precedentes etudes sur le commentaire sportif en ce qu’il propose une analyse a differents niveaux : prosodique, syntaxique et a terme, lexical. Par ailleurs, nous nous demarquons egalement des etudes anterieures sur les genres de discours, y compris les genres oraux, en prenant en compte les contraintes extralinguistiques qui pesent sur la production du discours. L’integration des contraintes extralinguistiques se fait dans le cadre de la theorie de l’optimalite appliquee ici au discours. {"title":"A Methodology for the Identification of Topic Transitions in Interaction","authors":"M. Riou","doi":"10.4000/DISCOURS.8997","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4000/DISCOURS.8997","url":null,"abstract":"Many analysts use the notion of “topic” to describe segments of discourse, whether written or spoken, and many regret that even though a considerable amount of work has been devoted to understanding and defining the notion of discourse topic, the analyst is often left without a robust methodology to apply to their own data. This paper uses a mixed-methods approach that draws on the qualitative-oriented theoretical frameworks of Conversational Analysis and Interactional Linguistics, and combines them with quantitative methods used in other sub-fields of linguistics, such as the coding schemes and inter-rater agreement measures used in Corpus Linguistics. The goal of this study is not to provide a new understanding of “topic”, but rather to propose 1) a rich definition compiled from various earlier studies and suited to the analysis of talk-in-interaction, and 2) a systematic way to apply it to new data. The ambition of the paper is to provide a methodology for a qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods analysis of topic-related phenomena in interaction, as one step among many in various research protocols. It provides empirical grounds for the claim that a research methodology based on the analyst’s intuitions may be a valid and robust way to identify topic transitions – if a number of precautionary steps are taken.
