{"title":"Structural and Functional Usages of Lexical Bundle in Native and Non-Native English Sociology Academic Writings: A Comparative Study Based on MICUSP","authors":"Bingren Long, Shaohui Shao, Juan Yao, Junchen Zhang","doi":"10.22158/eltls.v6n4p11","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22158/eltls.v6n4p11","url":null,"abstract":"Framed within Biber’s structural classification and Hyland’s functional classification, this study investigates the structural and functional uses of four-word lexical bundles in sociology academic writings by native (NS) and non-native speakers (NNS) of English by using the Michigan Corpus of Upper-level Student Papers (MICUSP) and tools such as AntConc and Xu Jiajin’s Log-Likelihood Ratio Test Calculator. The statistical findings reveal that both NS and NNS predominantly use noun phrase-based bundles, reflecting their critical role in sociology academic discourse. However, NNS exhibit a significantly higher usage of prepositional phrase-based bundles, indicating a strategy to enhance clarity and coherence. Functionally, while both groups rely heavily on research-oriented bundles, NNS employ text-oriented bundles more frequently, suggesting a heightened focus on ensuring textual coherence as a compensatory strategy for managing discourse. Conversely, NS more frequently use participant-oriented bundles, indicating greater rhetorical sophistication and personal engagement with the reader. This study looks into how cognitive ability affects Chinese adults preparing for the IELTS exam by having them learn English. We discovered via a number of experiments (62 Chinese students took part in) that adult learners frequently rely on well-known language systems, which can result in inefficiency and lower-quality language output. These results point to a possible detrimental relationship between cognitive ability and SLA, especially in adults who have passed the critical age. At the same time, Amelia's power also changes as the space changes. This dynamic relationship of power is in part consistent with Foucault's theory of power. The study employed a mixed method of observation, interview and questionnaire survey to explore the inner connection between stratification and equity in the context of education. Results from quantitative analysis showed that students' academic achievements were strongly impacted by the application of stratified teaching. Data elicited from classroom observation and interviews lead to the same conclusion: In classes where stratified instruction were systematically employed, students gained better learning progress and perception of education equity. The findings also suggest that the quality of teaching had a corresponding effect on students' academic achievements and understanding of education equity. This paper therefore investigates the general perception of Chinese-English code-mixing in mainland China, specifically whether code-mixing is viewed favorably or unfavorably. By conducting online questionnaires which mainly examine the English proficiency of the respondents, their code-mixing usages and their attitudes towards code-mixing in mainland China, this paper aims to find out whether different types of code-mixings would lead to different attitudes of respondents, moreover, whether there would be a certain code-mixing type which is particularly liked or disliked. This paper illustrates the idea of Bhatia and Ritchie (2012)- “four factors determining language choice and mixing on the part of the bilingual”. It was found that the new type of simultaneous interpreting assisted by speech recognition technology and machine translation technology can significantly reduce the cognitive load of student interpreters and improve the accuracy of translation. However, the advantages of technology-assisted simultaneous interpreting are not significant enough for professional interpreters compared with student interpreters. The primary obstacles typically arose from the misalignment between their teaching abilities and the practical demands of their work. This study, focusing on novice EFL teachers in Hubei Province, addressed the following inquiries from the perspectives of the theory of teachers' career development stage and the theory of work adjustment:What were the challenges confronting novice EFL teachers regarding their teaching abilities in Higher Education Institutions in Hubei Province?What factors contributed to these challenges related to teaching capability?What approaches did novice teachers adopt to address these challenges?This study employed a qualitative approach, with three novice EFL teachers newly employed by three different institutions serving as informants. Data were gathered from teaching diaries, lesson plans, classroom observations, and interviews. The researchers identified and categorized challenges related to teaching capability and coping strategies mentioned in the diaries, corroborating them with data from other sources such as lesson plan reviews and classroom observations.
