Under the guidance of relevance theory, this paper takes the bilingual soft news of China Daily as the materials adopts the literature method and case analysis method to examine the cultural defaults in the translation process of soft news, and finds out the appropriate compensation strategies. Through research, it is found that the most common cultural defaults in soft news are linguistic cultural defaults, followed by social cultural defaults, material cultural defaults, ecological cultural defaults and religious cultural defaults. In addition, reconstruction, transliteration and transplantation are common compensation strategies in translation, which need to be adjusted flexibly according to translation requirements. This study is expected to provide some reference for the translation of soft news and attract more scholars’ attention to cultural default and compensation in soft news translation, so as to improve the translation quality of soft news.","PeriodicalId":507147,"journal":{"name":"English Language Teaching and Linguistics Studies","volume":"13 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140260088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many foreign film works have been introduced into China, especially the English films popular among Chinese audiences. In order to realize film appreciation between different languages, subtitle translation comes into being. However, as an emerging field, subtitle translation studies are not mature compared with traditional translation studies. The Adaptation and Selection Theory is the core theory of the eco-translatology which is a novel and relatively complete system of translation theory put forward by Hu Gengshen, a Chinese scholar. This thesis adopts the Adaptation and Selection Theory as the theoretical basis. Firstly, the research on subtitle translation at home and abroad is reviewed. Secondly, the development, main principles and applicability of the Adaptation and Selection Theory are elaborated. Finally, under the guidance of this theory, this thesis analyzes how translators choose appropriate translation strategies, based on the specific example of subtitle translation in Kung Fu Panda 2, to select and transform from the three dimensions. Besides, how to get a translation with a high “degree of holistic adaptation and selection” are also explored.","PeriodicalId":507147,"journal":{"name":"English Language Teaching and Linguistics Studies","volume":"25 21","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140262896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study of gender differences in language is beneficial to translation theory and translation practice. Based on gender differences in language, this paper takes the Chinese translation of The Little Prince as an example to make a comparative study. Since its publication, The Little Prince has been widely admired by readers. Up to now, there are more than 200 translations in the world, with numerous Chinese translations, which are operable and representative. This paper focuses on the Chinese translations by Lin Zhenni and Li Jihong, and makes a comparative analysis of the language differences between translations, and finds that the gender differences between male and female translators in English-Chinese translation are reflected in three aspects: The language expression of female translators is concise and specific, the language expression of female translators is delicate, and strong subjectivity of the translator in translation. Finally, it is pointed out that gender difference in language expression is affected by social development and psychological factors.","PeriodicalId":507147,"journal":{"name":"English Language Teaching and Linguistics Studies","volume":"38 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139236604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By analysing the frequency and features of amplifiers in Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays and Ten-thousand English Compositions of Chinese Learners, it is noticeable that Chinese EFL learners’ limited variety of vocabulary might lead to the high frequency of certain amplifiers. Pedagogically, raising learners’ awareness on the inappropriate use of amplifiers in academic writing is a necessity. The instruction on using intensifying adverbs authentically should be emphasized in Chinese EFL classes.","PeriodicalId":507147,"journal":{"name":"English Language Teaching and Linguistics Studies","volume":"19 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139241746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, due to its long-standing perception as a destructive activity and the unique cultural environment, graffiti research in China has been relatively underdeveloped, with a focus on theoretical investigations. This study collected a total of 391 textual and pictorial graffiti samples from a language university in China as the corpus. From the perspective of identity construction, this study analyzed the characteristics of campus wall graffiti, as well as the methods and content of identity construction. The findings revealed that campus graffiti exhibits characteristics such as informality, anonymity, and counter-culturality. The language behaviors and symbol usage in graffiti include both one-way output and two-way interaction, the employment of textual and pictorial symbols, and the use of metaphors and symbolism. The construction of identity in graffiti primarily involves cultural identity, social identity, and creative identity among others. Lastly, in terms of campus graffiti management, this paper proposes effective strategies from the aspects of discourse power allocation and management, as well as feedback and reconstruction of identity construction. These strategies aim to transform disorder into order and foster an open and inclusive campus culture.","PeriodicalId":507147,"journal":{"name":"English Language Teaching and Linguistics Studies","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139248006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
