Designating a care coordinator within the multidisciplinary team has been suggested to improve cooperation and communication. However, evidence on the experiences of community mental health nurses (CMHNs) as care coordinators is limited. This systematic review and thematic synthesis aimed to investigate CMHNs' experiences and identify enablers and obstacles to effective implementation. We searched PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science for peer-reviewed primary papers published in English between 1990 and 2022, as well as gray materials from ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, and Google Scholar. After the screening process, only nine studies were deemed eligible for inclusion in the review. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the JBI critical evaluation checklist for qualitative studies, and data were analyzed using NVivo software and thematic synthesis based on Thomas and Harden's method. Our analysis reveals that CMHNs perceive the care coordinator role as a link to service users and as an added burden, including high demand for administrative tasks. CMHNs reported a lack of role clarity, leading to blurred boundaries within the multidisciplinary team, loss of professional identity, and decreased confidence. Role ambiguity and variability in team collaboration were significant contributors to role conflict. These findings indicate a critical need for role definition and clarity within community mental health multidisciplinary teams as it affects team functioning and the professional identities and confidence of CMHNs. It is recommended that healthcare management, clinical leaders, and professional nursing bodies reconsider their vision for the care coordinator role. This could be done through clear role definitions, training programs, and policy changes that ultimately enhance CMHNs' confidence and reaffirm their professional identities.
","PeriodicalId":50174,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interprofessional Care","volume":"39 3","pages":"499-509"},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2025-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144058742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eight psychiatrists and 10 nurses were interviewed. The interviews underwent thematic analysis by an interdisciplinary group of experts in ethics, law, mental health nursing, and psychiatry. Three themes were found. The first theme focused on role-specific tasks and perceived responsibility. Psychiatrists more often emphasized the legal perspective and specialist nurses the ethical perspective. The second theme was to adapt to other professionals' opinions. When someone else had made a decision, autonomy was perceived to decrease, whereas responsibility increased. The third theme was renunciation of autonomy for achieving cooperation. It was considered important to strive for consensus in the team. Both nurses and psychiatrists believed they had a high degree of autonomy and responsibility when their roles were well-defined. The respondents considered clear roles, good communication, shared expectations, and mutual respect to be prerequisites for interprofessional collaboration in hospital care of patients with deliberate self-harm.
","PeriodicalId":50174,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interprofessional Care","volume":" ","pages":"479-486"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2025-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143755591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These guidelines are intended to influence curricula, with universities also required to meet accreditation standards for individual professions. Standards are arguably a predominant driver for tertiary institutions and health professional courses. However, course accreditation processes primarily adopt a uni-professional focus; therefore, development of interprofessional competencies may not feature strongly in the educational preparation of health professionals. Furthermore, barriers to IPE are well documented and concerted effort is needed to champion and adopt interprofessional practice (IPP). This work seeks to explore the accreditation and practice standards of a sample of health professional courses in Australia to inform institutional IPE strategies and curriculum renewal processes within a higher education setting. We analyzed accreditation and practice standards and related policies for six healthcare professions. The inquiry focused on determining what graduates from each of the professions are expected to know, do and/or value with respect to IPP. Results demonstrate considerable difference in IPE and IPP expectations in the professional and accreditation standards of the professions explored. We describe how the findings can inform institutional reform for IPE and what can be learned from accreditation efforts in other countries.
","PeriodicalId":50174,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interprofessional Care","volume":"39 3","pages":"358-367"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2025-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144038458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To bridge these gaps and deliver culturally safe healthcare, healthcare practitioners require appropriate education. Interprofessional education learning activities can facilitate understanding of beneficial and collaborative approaches to Indigenous health. This study explored the depth, breadth, and nature of existing literature on educational strategies used while teaching Indigenous health approaches within interprofessional education. The scoping review was guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute's methodology and considered all forms of English-language evidence with any publication date; it included quantitative, qualitative, mixed-method studies, and gray literature. Six databases were searched along with hand searching and reference list scanning. Sources were screened, extracted using a data extraction form, and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The information was summarized using a summary of results table and a narrative summary. Of 1486 sources, 45 were included following a full-text review. An array of educational strategies informed by various theories and cultural concepts were extracted. Although the content of each learning activity was often unique to the local Indigenous community, many of the foundational theories and concepts were similar across cultures. The findings highlight the importance of partnering meaningfully with Indigenous individuals and communities in educational activity creation and delivery to enhance the quality of learning and learner satisfaction. These findings can contribute to developing culturally safe interprofessional healthcare services for Indigenous communities and guide the development of Indigenous health-related interprofessional education learning activities.
","PeriodicalId":50174,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interprofessional Care","volume":" ","pages":"487-498"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2025-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143081906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper focuses on the quantitative pre-post analysis of a mixed-methods evaluation study to assess the impact of 3-to-4-week placements on the first IPTW in Switzerland on students, facilitators, and patients. Outcomes for students and facilitators were measured using the University of the West of England Interprofessional Questionnaire (UWE-IP) for communication and teamwork skills as well as attitudes to collaborative learning and working, and the Fragebogen zur Arbeit im Team (FAT) to address team-development. Moreover, patient satisfaction was assessed, using a self-developed questionnaire. 63 students, 31 facilitators and 91 patients placed on the IPTW between 2018 and 2022 were included into the study, along with 71 healthcare professionals and 50 patients of the control-wards. UWE-IP and FAT were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed-rank test for pre-post-IPTW comparison and Kruskal-Wallis independent sample test for differences between post-IPTW and post-control. Mann-Whitney U-test was applied to determine differences in patient satisfaction between IPTW and control-ward. Statistically significant positive effects were seen pre-post IPTW for students and facilitators for two subscales of UWE-IP (Communication & Teamwork, and IP Relationship), as well as for FAT, with effect size up to r = 0.681. Control-ward staff scored significantly lower than post-IPTW participants on two UWE-IP subscales (IP Learning, and IP Relationship) and on FAT. They often include team-based frameworks such as bedside interprofessional rounds, geographic colocation of healthcare team members, interprofessional staff leadership, and unit-level data sharing. In inpatient settings, microsystems improve interprofessional communication and collaboration. In this qualitative study, we examined physician experiences of clinical microsystems and the mechanisms underpinning interprofessional communication in this environment. We interviewed 51 resident and hospitalist physicians. Thematic analysis of physician experiences revealed three key themes: (a) Clinical microsystem effect on workflow, (b) Open forum and work relationships, and (c) Face-to-face vs technology-based communication. Physicians described strong interprofessional relationships based on frequent face-to-face communication. Familiarity with healthcare team members, often resulting from being co-located to the same units, created a comfortable work environment, advanced patient care, and accelerated workflow. Physicians preferred in-person communication with interprofessional colleagues over technology-based communicationand described how in-person interactions enriched subsequent technology-led interactions. As the use of technology-based communication grows in inpatient settings, decreasing face-to-face interactions and facilitating dispersed care, understanding and implementing optimal conditions for effective interprofessional communication is essential.
","PeriodicalId":50174,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interprofessional Care","volume":" ","pages":"155-162"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2025-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142645054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research consisted of six steps: translation of the instrument into the new language, synthesis of the translated versions, back-translation, synthesis of the versions in the original language, evaluation of the syntheses by an expert committee, and pilot testing or pretesting and validation of the internal structure of the items of the instrument. The pilot testing involved 4 translators, 14 judges, and 30 healthcare professionals; the validation of the internal structure involved 686 professionals including nurses, physicians and physiotherapists. Translation and cross-cultural adaptation revealed no significant changes or discrepancies in meaning from the original model. Exploratory, confirmatory, and parallel factor analyses confirmed that the Brazilian scale is unidimensional.
