The aim of this report is to describe a reversible, transient cardiac functional impairment in an otherwise healthy 13-year-old adolescent male after inadvertent intravenous epinephrine administration for anaphylaxis. Following epinephrine administration, the patient presented with hypotension and respiratory failure, with electrocardiographic changes suggestive of ischemia and depressed cardiac function on echocardiogram. The patient's symptoms resolved within 24 hours without need of pharmaceutical therapies, and the comprehensive work-up failed to identify other contributory etiologies. His myocardial function improved in follow-up. Although rare, this case illustrates the importance of careful administration of high-risk medications and close monitoring of critical side effects such as cardiac dysfunction following epinephrine administration in pediatric patients.</p>","PeriodicalId":50094,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pediatric Health Care","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2025-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144055632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A major goal for this new department is to invigorate JPHC readers as policy advocates for all pediatric populations and their families in government, community, healthcare delivery, education, research, and quality improvement projects. Another goal is for National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioner members and all pediatric-focused NPs to submit their policy analysis for publication in the JPHC. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Policy Analytical Framework is the recommended framework for all manuscript submissions. Due to the rare condition, there are few cases and randomized control trials that report on the association with increased ICP. This case report discusses the importance of monitoring for symptoms of increased ICP and adverse effects of cyclosporine A, as this agent has been used in some cases of refractory MIS-C. Ultimately the patient in this case study experienced no significant long-term complications. Current clinical recommendations include intravenous immunoglobulins and corticosteroids as the first-line therapy and adding biologic therapies for refractory cases. Patients should be screened for obesity, as it is a risk factor for intracranial hypertension.
