However, research into skill learning in fitness is largely absent. In this article, I provide a poststructuralist informed approach to skill learning that places the body in the center of social and political inquiry. To do this, I first introduce the main tenets of poststructuralism and then discuss how Michel Foucault’s work, particularly his concept of dispositive, has informed research in fitness instruction. Finally, I highlight how Gilles Deleuze’s concept of assemblage can inform skill learning in the commercialized contexts of women’s fitness.","PeriodicalId":49642,"journal":{"name":"Quest","volume":"34 1","pages":"167 - 183"},"PeriodicalIF":2.8,"publicationDate":"2023-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88380063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two perspectives on movement capability and movement skill learning will be presented and discussed here: phenomenology and phenomenography, with a focus on phenomenography. Since some similarities between these two perspectives has raised questions and caused some confusion, this paper attempts to clarify, mainly through empirical examples, some significant similarities and differences. An overall difference is that phenomenology is concerned with the question “what does it mean to be a learner”?, while a central question for phenomenographic oriented research is instead: “what does it mean for learners to learn and know what is expected to be known?” Both approaches share an interest in acknowledging the perspective of the learner.","PeriodicalId":49642,"journal":{"name":"Quest","volume":"3 3 1","pages":"119 - 135"},"PeriodicalIF":2.8,"publicationDate":"2023-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78284657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper attempts to capture the influence of Sport Education, not only within school physical education, but in ways and arenas far beyond Daryl’s original imagination. It is now used in university physical education courses and teacher preparation programs, in summer camps, and there is evidence of some use in after-school and community sports settings. This evolution has manifest pedagogical iterations of the model far beyond the essential features articulated in his initial vision, and teachers, students, prospective teachers, and coaches have all found a renewed vigor in their sport experience. The paper describes some of these “beyond” iterations of the model as a tribute to how Sport Education has served to realize multiple objectives for multiple practitioners in ways beyond his original aspirations.","PeriodicalId":49642,"journal":{"name":"Quest","volume":" 41","pages":"63 - 73"},"PeriodicalIF":2.8,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72384847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the forty plus years of his professional career Daryl was a preeminent driving force in forging a vision for physical education and sport pedagogy with his commitment to “improving the quality of sport and other physical activity experiences in school physical education for all children and youth” (Rink & van der Mars, 2008, p. 9). Daryl’s seminal ideas in relation to teaching, physical education teacher education and research in sport pedagogy remain so embedded in the practices of the field that the title of “visionary leader” seems appropriate. This special issue is designed as a celebration of Daryl’s ideas and vision and pay tribute to his enduring legacy in the field of physical education and sport pedagogy. He humbly summarized his contribution as a “small role in the development of research in the field now universally referred to as sport pedagogy” (National Association Kinesiology [NAK], 2008). The genesis of this special issue tribute was the brainchild of a small cadre of Daryl’s former doctoral students and colleagues from The Ohio State University (OSU) who had worked with and alongside him during various stages of his career. Both Shiri and I, as coeditors, were international students who completed our doctoral degrees at OSU and had the privilege of studying with Daryl. Although we have first-hand knowledge of Daryl and his work, we also borrowed heavily from information Bobbie (Daryl’s wife) shared with us. Bobbie was a physical education teacher who Daryl met at OSU when she was studying for her master’s degree. During their 44 years together, they lived and learned from each other and Bobbie’s experiences as an elementary physical education teacher influenced Daryl’s contributions to the fields of physical education and sport pedagogy. Daryl spent his childhood developing his passion for playing sport on the south side of Chicago. He played basketball and graduated from Hope College in 1960. Daryl stayed at Hope College after graduating, working as a teacher and coach for ten years while earning his master’s degree from Western Michigan University and his doctorate in Physical Education from Indiana University. That time saw his first interlude into academic writing with his first book being a basketball performance textbook. Daryl developed his passion to engage in written forms of academic discourse with his doctoral dissertation on the role that education played in creating and reinforcing inequity; specifically how sport, when","PeriodicalId":49642,"journal":{"name":"Quest","volume":"9 1","pages":"1 - 4"},"PeriodicalIF":2.8,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84038293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The introduction points out the deep knowledge of French PE Daryl Siedentop had gained through his international activities and how his theoretical and methodological contributions resonated and inspired the French didactique research. A first section presents some key links between the Sport Education model and the didactic approach in terms of curricular choices. The second section emphasizes the distinctive but complementary research perspectives of the classroom ecology and the joint action in didactics for the future of PE. The conclusion returns to Daryl Siedentop’s ontological and epistemological viewpoints and their many common aspects with the French didactique tradition.","PeriodicalId":49642,"journal":{"name":"Quest","volume":"42 1","pages":"74 - 85"},"PeriodicalIF":2.8,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76004475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Sport Education in Physical Education Project (SEPEP) project provides the backdrop to explore the re-contextualization and development of the sport-based physical education in Australia. The SEM emphasizing developing movement competency as one of its three educational objectives provided a context for game-based approaches. In Australia, this led to new relationships between the SEM and game-based pedagogies being explored and expressed in hybrid developments. While he had a clear focus on issues of validity and reliability concerning systematic observation, over the past decades, attention to such issues appears to have eroded. By drawing on Siedentop’s contribution to systematic observation and the guidance he provided on gathering quality data, in this paper we discuss the lessons learned from his work regarding what needs to be observed, how, by whom, and under what conditions – all addressing important validity and reliability issues. We argue that closely attending to these issues is critical not only for reinvigorating a research field initiated by scholars such as Siedentop but also for restoring its key role in studying teaching quality.","PeriodicalId":49642,"journal":{"name":"Quest","volume":"37 1","pages":"29 - 38"},"PeriodicalIF":2.8,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86898934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
