Abdalameer","doi":"10.1007/s13204-023-02984-2","DOIUrl":"10.1007/s13204-023-02984-2","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>This work examines the structural and antibacterial properties of (CuO NPS) and (CuO/Ag) nanocomposites produced by a simple chemical method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern demonstrated the crystalline character of CuO NPs, Ag Nps, and (CuO/Ag) nanocomposites. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) revealed the morphology of CuO NPs, Ag Nps, and CuO/Ag nanocomposites. FESEM and XRD computed the average diameters of CuO, Ag, and CuO/Ag to be 39.42, 22.223, and 49.66 nm, respectively (23.485, 16.857 and 21.317 nm). The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) spectra and XRD pattern indicated that the produced CuO, Ag, and (CuO/Ag) Nps were extremely pure. CuO NPs and (CuO/Ag) exhibited good antibacterial activity against numerous bacterial species (<i>S. aureus</i>, <i>St. epidermidis</i>, <i>E. coli</i>, <i>Klebsiella</i> sp., <i>C. albicans</i>). {"title":"Chitosan-capped CuO nanoparticles: a comprehensive, comparative study of their broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacy","authors":"Kanchan Parate,&nbsp;Damayanti Meher,&nbsp;Pallavi Gupta,&nbsp;Pratibha Pandey","doi":"10.1007/s13204-023-02987-z","DOIUrl":"10.1007/s13204-023-02987-z","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>Antibacterial efficacy of chitosan-capped copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO–CS NPs) was evaluated against the Gram-negative bacteria (<i>E. coli</i>) and Gram-positive bacteria (<i>B. subtilis).</i> Comparative antibacterial activity evaluation was performed for CuO–CS NPs, nano Cu(OH)<sub>2,</sub> nano silver, CuO, and CuSO<sub>4</sub>.5H<sub>2</sub>O salt. Miles and Misra method and the spread plate CFU count method were used to enumerate cell counts for antibacterial activity evaluation. The spread plate colony forming unit (CFU) count method is preferable because of its reliability and accuracy. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of CuO–CS NPs were determined to be 2 µg/ml for <i>E. coli</i> and 12.5 µg/ml for<i> B. subtilis.</i> The values were comparable to those obtained for AgNPs. Moreover, in kinetic study these NPs showed the ability to decontaminate 2 × 10<sup>5</sup> CFU/ml of <i>E. coli</i> within 2 h at a concentration of 10 μg/ml and 3 × 10<sup>5</sup> CFU/ml of <i>B. subtilis</i> within 4 h at a concentration of 20 μg/ml.
