It also examines the moderating role of motivation (adventure-seeking and learning-seeking) in the relationships between all variables. The survey technique was used to test these hypotheses, and a total of 432 data were collected from tourists who came to Turkey-Fethiye for paragliding. The results of the analysis showed that flow experience had a positive effect on storytelling intention and satisfaction mediated the relationship between these two variables. In addition, the effect of flow experience on satisfaction is stronger for adventure-seeking tourists. The empirical results offer theoretical and practical implications for both destination managers and adventure tourism professionals.

","PeriodicalId":46931,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism-Research Planning and Management","volume":"51 ","pages":"Article 100894"},"PeriodicalIF":3.6,"publicationDate":"2025-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144290848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examined solo hikers' risk perceptions, motivations, and well-being through a critical realist lens. Go-along interviews with ten solo hikers across English trails were thematically analysed. Findings suggest that sociocultural factors, including early exposure and athletic identity, shaped risk perception, yet risk was also reframed as an opportunity for personal growth through repeated solo hiking exposure. Intrinsic motivations for solo hiking aligned with self-determination theory, including autonomy, competence, and relatedness, while the drive to move emerged as an additional factor in movement regulation. Psychological benefits included cognitive restoration, emotional self-regulation, and awe-induced shifts in perspective. These were heightened by an embodied multisensory immersion in nature. These findings contribute to the psychological understanding of solo hiking in England, underscoring the need for socially and culturally sensitive policies to enhance safety, accessibility, and therapeutic application. Future research should explore diverse populations and the long-term implications of solo hiking for well-being.

","PeriodicalId":46931,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism-Research Planning and Management","volume":"51 ","pages":"Article 100903"},"PeriodicalIF":3.6,"publicationDate":"2025-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144270651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of the remaining 261 participants, 184 (71 %) prioritized safe terrain, 189 (72 %) relied on personal assessment, 110 (42 %) utilized the Varsom platform for terrain information and observational data, 112 (43 %) used social media and 101 (39 %) consulted peers. Participants venturing into avalanche terrain relied more on own assessment than those venturing into safe terrain (92 % vs 64 %, p < .001). The reliance on unofficial sources may highlight a potential safety gap during the off-season, suggesting the need for improved communication and expanded early-season observational data. Recommendations include enhancing off-season data sharing on the forecasting platform, targeted safety education on social media, and encouraging recreationists to contribute observations to boost the quality and availability of early-season information. These steps could improve decision-making and risk assessment during trip planning among recreational backcountry users, promoting safer outdoor practices even outside the avalanche warning period.

Management and stakeholder Implications

The findings highlight the need for enhanced avalanche safety communication and decision-support tools during Norway's off-season, particularly in years with a lot of snowfall before December when official avalanche forecasts are unavailable. Implications are also relevant for warning services with similar challenges and regions where regular avalanche warnings are not issued. Recreational winter backcountry users heavily rely on personal judgment, social media, and peer advice, indicating a gap in standardized information sources. To address this, stakeholders should consider.

•Expanding the information available on the avalanche bulletin (varsom.no). Analysis reveals complex patterns of interaction between tourism operations and felid populations, with behavioral modifications, human-wildlife conflicts, and cultural-emblematic significance emerging as dominant themes. Research demonstrates pronounced geographical concentration in African and Asian contexts, with substantial taxonomic bias toward lions, leopards, and tigers. Evidence indicates predominantly negative ecological consequences from inadequate management frameworks, though some populations demonstrate remarkable resilience through adaptive behavioral strategies. While tourism generates substantial economic value and potentially catalyzes conservation initiatives, risks of overdependence and inequitable benefit distribution necessitate careful consideration. Human-felid conflict dynamics reveal intricate relationships with tourism development, where proper management can foster coexistence through economic alternatives and attitudinal changes. Tourism's contribution to scientific research and environmental education shows promise, particularly through citizen science initiatives, though systematic biases in research coverage warrant attention. Implementation of sustainable tourism frameworks requires comprehensive management protocols incorporating standardized monitoring systems, evidence-based viewing guidelines, and robust community engagement mechanisms. This synthesis provides foundation for evidence-based tourism management while illuminating critical pathways toward optimizing conservation outcomes through carefully balanced development approaches.

","PeriodicalId":46931,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism-Research Planning and Management","volume":"51 ","pages":"Article 100902"},"PeriodicalIF":3.6,"publicationDate":"2025-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144212263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a major mountaineering destination in China, the Siguniang Mountain region serves as a representative site for studying high-altitude mountaineering behavior and risk-related decision-making. This study focuses on the decision-making mechanisms of mountaineers under the context of commercialized mountaineering, using the Siguniang Mountain region as a case study. It explores the relational pathways among mountaineering motivation, risk perception, negative emotions, participation intention, and mountaineering decision-making behavior. Empirical analysis was conducted using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and variance analysis. The results indicate that mountaineering motivation negatively predicts both risk perception and negative emotions; risk perception positively influences negative emotions and suppresses participation intention; and participation intention significantly predicts mountaineering decision-making behavior. The variance analysis further reveals that age, income, and mountaineering experience significantly affect key variables, while gender presents a more complex and nonlinear pattern of influence. These findings suggest that the unique commercial model of Siguniang Mountain region has reshaped the risk perception framework and reinforced an experience-oriented tendency in mountaineering decision-making behavior.

","PeriodicalId":46931,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism-Research Planning and Management","volume":"51 ","pages":"Article 100895"},"PeriodicalIF":3.6,"publicationDate":"2025-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144212262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, the economic value of the waters has been extensively studied over the last few decades. We conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of the European water recreation that examined the travel cost valuation studies published between 2000 and 2021. Following the well-established PRISMA guidelines, we found 40 separate studies with a total of 85 consumer surplus estimates based on data from over 113,000 persons. The data were analysed using 1) a multilevel random-effects model for estimating the average consumer surplus of a trip and 2) a meta-regression model with publication year, region, GDP per capita, multi-day trips and the type of recreation were included as covariates. The potential presence of publication bias was tested using Eggert's test. Studies on multiday trips and a variety of water recreation activities were observed to provide larger value estimates than studies focusing on specific single-day activities. In-water activities, such as boating, were more highly valued than activities in the vicinity of water, such as recreational activities on a beach. The average consumer surplus (CS) per trip was €158 (95 % C.I. [€107, €232]) in year 2019 PPP-corrected EU-27-country euros. No statistically significant differences in consumer surplus were found across regions. The average CS was also not found to have changed over the study period adjusted for inflation.

","PeriodicalId":46931,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism-Research Planning and Management","volume":"50 ","pages":"Article 100899"},"PeriodicalIF":3.6,"publicationDate":"2025-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144169698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The result turns out that outdoor safety education significantly enhances safety participation behaviors among hikers, with safety cognition acting as a key mediator. Column-type safety education is more effective than story-type in influencing hiker behaviors. Additionally, role clarity and Plog's psychological types are important moderators in the effectiveness of safety education, affecting outcomes differently based on the type. In this paper we analyse wayfinding and navigation behaviours among pilgrim tourists along the St. Olav Ways pilgrim paths in Norway. The pilgrim paths in themselves, with varying levels of physical signage and markings together with a growing database of digital markings, paths and maps, constitute a system of information for wayfinding (i.e. a “wayfinding system”). This information is relevant for the users in different parts of their journeys ranging from the planning phases, under ways along the paths, and to possible sharing of experiences after the journey is completed. Through a mixed methods approach with qualitative and quantitative data we have studied the case of wayfinding and applicable navigation information and behaviours along the pilgrim paths. We describe and analyse markings, signage, and digital tools using theoretical frameworks (Lynch 1960; Mollerup 2005; Wiener, Büchner, and Hölscher 2009; Barker 2019) to study wayfinding strategies and behaviours. What we describe as a wayfinding system is pivotal in the constitution and identity of the paths as pilgrim paths. Our research draws on observations, interviews, digital ethnography, and surveys to understand travellers’ motivations, information sources, and actions along the St. Olav Ways. From this we establish an empirically based description of wayfinding behaviours and preferences in the context of pilgrim tourism. The systematic description of the relevant official information of the St. Olav Ways as a wayfinding system, serves as a “best practice” for designing pilgrim or general-purpose hiking paths. Insights into pilgrim tourists' wayfinding behaviours can be used to guide the design, branding, communication, implementation, and management of such paths.

","PeriodicalId":46931,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism-Research Planning and Management","volume":"50 ","pages":"Article 100891"},"PeriodicalIF":3.6,"publicationDate":"2025-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144138610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study pioneers integrating camera traps (CT) with Deep Learning (DL) models employing object-detection-based Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to develop an offline visitor-counting algorithm tailored for video analysis rather than static images. Different CT models to record human activity through video were deployed in the Spanish National Parks of Sierra de las Nieves and Sierra de Guadarrama. Visitors in staggered positions and obscuring each other represent a typical video analysis issue. To address this limitation, the proposed algorithm deploys multiple virtual counting lines, i.e., crossing lines and internal identifiers for individual visitors. The algorithm achieved accurate tracking regardless of the video's length, effectively handling challenges associated with varying recording durations. Furthermore, the algorithm was able to be executed in a high- and medium-low-quality computing environment with no difficulties. Moreover, the study included variations in camera position, perspective, weather, time of day, video resolution, length, and format, evaluating the algorithm's robustness in real-world scenarios. The CNN models implemented through the algorithm achieved high accuracies, with the best results ranging from 98.48 % to 99.77 %. In addition, high performances were achieved regardless of the CNN employed, the frame rate, and the variability of the video set. Therefore, this study proposes a monitoring system that provides an affordable, fast, and accurate approach for PA and other recreational landscapes, reliably tracking visitors in remote areas lacking real-time network coverage.

","PeriodicalId":46931,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism-Research Planning and Management","volume":"50 ","pages":"Article 100890"},"PeriodicalIF":3.6,"publicationDate":"2025-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144134586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Digital technologies like smartphone-based apps facilitate route planning, navigation, and post-hike reflections. However, this creates a tension between digital assistance and the core motives of hiking, such as experiencing nature and finding balance in everyday life. While digital technologies can enhance safety in challenging situations, they also pose risks, such as over-reliance on GPS navigation or a decline in traditional wayfinding skills. Despite quantitative studies indicating a high digital affinity among hikers, there is limited qualitative research on how digital hiking is experienced. This conceptual paper makes a case for researching the uses and experiences of hikers with digital technologies by applying the method of “Go-Alongs”. After starting with the theoretical foundations of sports geography and hiking research, the methodology of walking methodology is displayed. It is then discussed how this research method can help to get a more profound understanding of digital behaviour in the context of hiking. The focus is on decision-making processes for route selection, the influence of digital tools on navigation and reflection, and their alignment with the original motives for hiking. Finally, methodological challenges and potentials are critically assessed.

","PeriodicalId":46931,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism-Research Planning and Management","volume":"50 ","pages":"Article 100897"},"PeriodicalIF":3.6,"publicationDate":"2025-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144130859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
