Conventional assessments of public toilet services often overlook actual usage patterns and focus solely on physical distance, neglecting wayfinding convenience in shaping user experience. This study addresses these gaps by conducting a city-wide analysis of public toilet service efficiency in Nanjing, China, emphasizing both accessibility and wayfinding. An online route planning algorithm was employed to generate a 5-, 10-, and 15-min catchment area map, quantifying the spatial coverage of public toilets. Additionally, deep learning techniques were utilized to detect public toilet signage in Nanjing's old urban area street views to assess wayfinding convenience. The results indicate an average toilet density of 0.91 units per km<sup>2</sup>, with 10-min catchment areas covering 27.47% of the city space, 71.36% of the population, and 82.00% of public service points of interest in Nanjing. However, signage is present at only 38.32% of public toilets within the old urban area, revealing disparities in distribution, coverage gaps, and inadequate signage in certain areas. To address these gaps, Nanjing could expand public toilet facilities to enlarge the 10-min catchment areas and encourage more businesses to open their toilets to the public. Additionally, increasing signage, including for social public toilets, could improve wayfinding and thus enhance the service efficiency of public toilets across the city. This study offers actionable insights for urban planners and policymakers to improve public toilet infrastructure. Moreover, the methodology provides a scalable framework for evaluating urban infrastructure in cities worldwide.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":45131,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Urban Management","volume":"14 3","pages":"Pages 735-752"},"PeriodicalIF":5.0,"publicationDate":"2025-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144893629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research investigates the triangular pattern that emerges from the 3 phase sides of the human mobility study area. The main problem is that the pattern of human mobility in the world's cities is not properly recognized. To answer the question “What is the pattern of human mobility in the city of Tehran based on the triangular model?”, human mobility is divided into 4 categories: Job, Education, Shopping, and Leisure, which are the most demanded in the city. Therefore, the sides of the triangular human mobility pattern are presented in 3 socio-spatial, socio-temporal, and temporal-spatial sections. With the identification of human mobility in the above 4 categories, from case to case and as a simple experiment that can be conducted in the cities around the world the above 4 categories were separated and identified as triangles of human mobility in urban space. In this analysis, it was found that the relationships between shopping, education, and leisure are close and interrelated, and the activities of job, education, and shopping are also interrelated.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":45131,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Urban Management","volume":"14 2","pages":"Pages 607-614"},"PeriodicalIF":3.9,"publicationDate":"2025-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143948069","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Urban functional area division using traditional methods often has limitations, such as relying on a single data source and using division methods that are mostly based on road network units. To address these issues, this paper considers the impacts of Open Street Map road network data, Point of Interest data, nighttime light data, and land use data on functional area identification and proposes a method based on Graph Clustering Neural Networks to analyze and study urban functional areas. To begin with, the basic datasets are utilized to extract the spatial structure and attribute features of urban functional areas. Then, a transportation network model is constructed by combining the basic characteristics of the road network with socio-economic characteristics. Through the use of Graph Clustering Neural Networks and clustering algorithms, urban functional areas can be identified through clustering through the integration of Graph Neural Networks and clustering algorithms. For functional area analysis, Point of Interest data and land use data are then utilized. Finally, the accuracy of the clustering results is verified by comparison with real images. Beijing was chosen as the study area for this research. The Graph Clustering Neural Network model's urban functional area analysis is highly accurate, allowing for precise identification of the city's spatial distribution characteristics, as demonstrated by the results. The analysis of functional areas offers a better understanding of urban characteristics and distribution patterns, providing more scientific and precise references for urban planning. Additionally, it offers strong support for real-world urban management and decision-making, such as traffic planning, land use optimization, and public resource allocation.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":45131,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Urban Management","volume":"14 3","pages":"Pages 642-656"},"PeriodicalIF":5.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144893624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These impacts are heterogeneous because of the interaction between different regional climate changes and the varying socio-economic characteristics of affected places. Climate change also impacts the management of cultural heritage sites. We then propose a method to identify heritage sites at risk from climate change issues, considering the single components of risk, namely both the natural hazard and the resilient/vulnerable local characteristics that may increase or mitigate the potential damage. The link between the natural and human spheres is, in fact, crucial for the development of suitable mitigation and prevention strategies, particularly relevant for developing countries that suffer from scarce economic resources. Overall, this work aims to provide a method to detect heritage sites at risk and a decision support tool for strategically managing cultural sites. We focus on Italy since it is one of the countries with a higher endowment of cultural heritage. To address this question, we incorporated both subjective (perceived) and objective (physical) walkability data. Using data from 697 participants across seven Chinese tertiary education campuses, the study employs a counterfactual analysis to estimate the impact of campus perceived walkability on students’ walking experiences. The analysis reveals that students living in campuses with improved walkability are 9.75% more likely to have positive walking experiences compared to those without walkability renovations. While walking attitude is strongly correlated with walking experiences, the study emphasizes the significance of objective factors such as campus surroundings and the availability of walking spaces in influencing the walking experience. Geographical features, including campus perceived walkability improvements, have the most substantial impact, and this effect varies across different subsets of respondents. These findings underscore the importance of considering specific subsets and campus features when assessing the impact of walkability improvements on the walking experience. In conclusion, the study provides compelling evidence of a causal link between improved campus perceived walkability and enhanced affective walking experiences among students, suggesting the need for further research on mediating factors and cultural variations affecting student mental health on various Chinese campuses.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":45131,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Urban Management","volume":"14 3","pages":"Pages 657-674"},"PeriodicalIF":5.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144893623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Understanding how urban road network density and width influence traffic performance is crucial for informed decision-making in urban planning. In this study, we designed three homogeneous square road networks with varying densities and conducted simulation experiments. By controlling for heterogeneity in road network structure and variables such as network size, road area ratio, and traffic input, we ensured effective comparison of simulation results. Using the macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) model, we analyzed metrics including MFD scatter dispersion, changes in experimental results with different vehicle arrival patterns, distortion of the MFD image with varying traffic volume, MFD slope variations, and maximum outflow rates. This analysis enables comparison of road network performance under different vehicle arrival rates and traffic input variations, exploring the impact of the \"narrow and dense network\" strategy on reliability, stability, and efficiency. In addition, the results of our proposed scatter fitting method are similar to previous clustering-then-fitting methods and compensate for the challenges in critical point estimation. Results indicate that, while maintaining a constant road area ratio, higher density improves network reliability but may initially decrease stability, while efficiency varies with traffic conditions and examination angles. These findings elucidate the interplay between road network density, width, traffic state, and macroscopic performance, providing a basis for rational urban road network construction.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":45131,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Urban Management","volume":"14 2","pages":"Pages 543-561"},"PeriodicalIF":3.9,"publicationDate":"2025-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143948065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One common feature of these new structures is that cities/urban areas are becoming much larger in population as well as spatial size and continue to grow unabated – a trend of “mega-urbanisation”. The planning and administrative systems set up under the traditional urban-rural dichotomy no longer reflect the reality of settlement growth and therefore lead to a blurring of city boundaries and challenges in the management of urban areas. Here we make use of geospatial modeling and open-source data for a high-level spatial-linking approach across multiple scales and a long-term perspective in three distinct socio-economic settings, specifically Germany, Japan and China's Yangtze River Delta region and therefore visualize urban development trends over 45 years. Our mapping indicates that the emergence of megacities and metropolitan regions is primarily driven by endogenous industrial change, particularly between the secondary and tertiary sectors of the economy. Our findings shed new light on research in regional development and planning and demonstrate the need to go beyond the prevailing discussion that focuses on advanced producer services in the context of an ever-advancing globalisation process.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":45131,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Urban Management","volume":"14 2","pages":"Pages 530-542"},"PeriodicalIF":3.9,"publicationDate":"2025-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143948064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is considerable debate regarding the sequence of events: whether urbanization fosters economic development and, subsequently, trade, economic growth, and trade precede urbanization, or whether there is a reciprocal relationship between them. Each perspective has its theoretical underpinnings, necessitating empirical evidence to discern the causal direction, which holds significant policy implications. This research explores the relationship between urbanization, economic development, and trade over the short and long term. Through a comprehensive examination utilizing cointegration and Granger causality tests conducted on data from Saudi Arabia from 1991 to 2022, the study first establishes the integration order of the variables. Subsequently, it employs the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) and Error Correction Model (ECM) techniques to unravel short-term and long-term causal dynamics. The findings unveil a relationship between urbanization and economic development, with evidence pointing to bidirectional causality between these variables across both short and long terms. Regarding the relationship between trade and economic development, while short-term causality flows in both directions, the long-term analysis suggests a unidirectional relationship between trade and economic development. This implies an indirect linkage between trade and urbanization through GDP, as no direct causality between trade and urbanization is evident. Finally, this paper uncovers this interactive connection to urban resilience.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":45131,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Urban Management","volume":"14 2","pages":"Pages 512-529"},"PeriodicalIF":3.9,"publicationDate":"2025-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143948063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By analyzing three cases—the Ningmeng Talented Apartment (government-led), the Wancun Plan (private enterprise-led), and the V-town Apartment (state-owned enterprise-led)—the research highlights the complexities of balancing state intervention, market forces, and social objectives. Despite intentions to improve living conditions, these initiatives have often resulted in unaffordable rents, displacement of low-income residents, and exacerbation of social inequalities. The projects illustrate the limitations of both market-driven and state-led models in achieving inclusive housing policies.
