However, a number of studies have revealed that a significant proportion of tenants endure unsatisfactory housing experiences attributed to their landlords. Drawing upon the concept of housing class and Harvey's (1979) theory of class-monopoly rent and class power, this study investigates how landlords in various sub-sectors employ their class power to realize class-monopoly rent and the subsequent impact on tenants' housing experiences. Through in-depth interviews conducted with 30 landlords and tenants representing different sub-sectors in Shenzhen, we have identified that the strategies employed by landlords are contingent upon the power differentials between them and their tenants. The wider the power gap, the greater the range of strategies landlords can utilize, leading to diminished housing experiences for tenants. Additionally, we have developed a housing class scheme in urban China, offering valuable insights into asset inequality and social stratification. By adopting a Marxist perspective, this paper contributes to the ongoing discussion on power dynamics between landlords and tenants. Furthermore, several policy recommendations are provided across different sub-sectors to rebalance the power relationship between landlords and tenants and enhance tenants' housing experiences.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":45131,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Urban Management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":6.1,"publicationDate":"2023-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S222658562300064X/pdfft?md5=b43023fde0a2591d9cdba0fd3f93503f&pid=1-s2.0-S222658562300064X-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41356958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional location-allocation models mostly take travel distance and facility construction cost as the decision-making objectives, with relatively single optimization objectives, and are not sufficiently adaptable to reality. The introduction of the accessibility analysis and the concept of equalization of public services diversify the objectives of urban public service facility optimization decisions. The construction of the circle of life is based on residents' behavior and helps to improve its adaptability in the configuration of public services. This study evaluates the accessibility of eight types of public service facilities in Xiangyang High-tech Zone, China, from a Living Circle perspective, based on the Gaussian Two-step Floating Catchment Area (G2SFCA) method. We integrate the advantages of the Minimum Facility Point (MFP) model, Maximum Covering Location Problem (MCLP) model, and P-Median model to address the equity and efficiency issues in facility configuration, and seek the optimal layout scheme under the fairness objective. Results showed that after using the improved location-allocation models, the maximum travel time for residents was reduced from 76 min to 13 min, and the average travel time was reduced from 19 min to 8 min. Additionally, the coverage rate of the facilities increased from an average of 57% to 97%, and the spatial layout of facilities was more rational. The research results contributed to the study of spatial problems and spatial equity in facility allocation.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":45131,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Urban Management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":6.1,"publicationDate":"2023-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2226585623000626/pdfft?md5=e99c2c09f3cdc6ba02f30d9cfd2daa62&pid=1-s2.0-S2226585623000626-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42746887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Computational and collaborative approaches are two contemporary options for scenario planning. They have distinct roles and are often applied independently. This study investigates the integration of these two approaches, addressing a knowledge gap by explicitly integrating a Cellular Automata-based model within the collaborative geodesign framework. It assesses the integration process and scenario planning outcomes through a resilience planning case study. The key finding from this experiment is that integrating the information generated by a computational approach with the transparency and reliability inherent in a collaborative approach can enhance the end-user's scenario planning experience. The integration is also perceived to have positive effects on scenario outcomes, which is particularly relevant for joint evidence-based and collaborative resilience planning in cities and regions. Research has argued that the economic impact of the pandemic includes stagnancy in the real estate markets. Similarly, Indonesian real-estate market players have reported declining demand for high-rise and dense multi-unit residential buildings in favor of landed houses during the pandemic. However, it has not yet included customers' perspective analysis, which raises a question of whether there has been a change in preferences for the types of housing caused by the pandemic. This paper aims to provide a scientific discourse on the topic using the explanatory quantitative method. The research sampled over 380 respondents from real-estate customers in 2020. The data were analyzed using binary logistic regression calculations. The result suggests increases in the need to control living space affect respondents' housing preferences. The Hong Kong government has utilized new town developments to meet its development goals, employing a balanced development principle. However, Hong Kong's new towns have long been criticized as ‘dormitory towns,’ as they cannot achieve self-sufficiency, partly due to the uneven distribution of public amenities. Access to public amenities, such as libraries, municipal halls, and performing arts venues is not only crucial for creating a sense of community and identity but also for the development of sustainable and livable communities while also helping to address inequality. Hong Kong's new towns have been developed through three generations, starting in the 1960s. Of interest for this paper is Tung Chung, the latest new town that has attracted public attention due to its lack of community identity and inadequate access to public facilities, all of which are exacerbated by the new town's poor urban form. To understand the relationship between access to cultural facilities and quality of life, this paper assesses and compares the total number, capacity, and overall access to public facilities within Hong Kong's new towns and the variation within each generation. After that, we focus on Tung Chung to explore, through spatial analysis and interviews, the impact of the new town's urban form and its limited offer of public facilities. Our findings suggest that the more recent new towns, particularly Tung Chung, are disadvantaged in both qualities of the urban form and access to public facilities. Moreover, lower-income households in public housing are particularly disenfranchised. This affects the residents' daily life, depriving them of access to social services and affecting community life, thus exacerbating inequality. Future expansion areas are designed based on the same principles and will thus likely result in similar issues.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":45131,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Urban Management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":6.1,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44752139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A quantitative method employing a questionnaire style survey was used to test the research hypotheses, with a qualitative method used to obtain a better understanding of the quantitative findings. Findings reveal that the level of community participation in the urban planning process is low. Factors contributing to lack of participation are the unwillingness of individuals to participate, as well as the inability of social media platforms used by urban authorities to effectively interact with the local community. Therefore, this study recommends the establishment of a unified national strategy for social media platforms used by urban institutions, which will stimulate the use of government instruments such as dialogue and incentives, thereby enhancing social networks and the effectiveness of organizers. We conducted an online survey between March and April 2020 in Quito, Ecuador, and applied quantitative and spatial methods to analyze the perceptions. The results show statistically significant differences in neighbors’ support, home safety, and neighborhood safety between normal days and lockdown days. The perceptions of the public space as non-important before the lockdown and the perceptions of not being safe at home or in the neighborhood are spatially random, not concentrated in a specific area of the city. Our findings also show that gender, the importance of public space during normal days, and the willingness of neighbors to support each other on lockdown days could explain the perception of the importance of public space on lockdown days.
