As a result of the relationship between the actors of industrialization and the dynamics of the conformation of a worker-factory environment in the northeast region of Santiago, three variables will be explored in-depth: the location of a manufacturing network that acted as a marker of the neighborhood space; the business initiatives with respect to urban infrastructure and services in this part of the city; and the sense of belonging among the population that inhabited the neighborhood in their double condition of workers and residents.The methodology located at the crossover between urban history and the history of the world of work incorporates a relational approach to identify, in the physical and representational organization of the place analyzed, a weaving of ties to the historical context that frames the 1930s and 1950s.The research results, by deepening the repercussions of industrial activity in a neighborhood little studied from this perspective, contribute to strengthening studies of factory zoning in Santiago and integrating the spatial variable in the analysis of the origins of industrialization in the Chilean capital.","PeriodicalId":44990,"journal":{"name":"Revista INVI","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47639967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article explores immigrant's access to housing through a qualitative and socio-spatial methodology, using observation, interviews, and mapping tools to analyze La Florida and La Floresta's neighborhoods in the Metropolitan District of Quito. The objective is to expose the differentiated logics that underlie placement processes in terms of location and habitability and analyze phenomena of spatial and residential segregation and self-segregation in both neighborhoods. The study considers access to immigrant housing based on the existing relationship between the land, housing, and rental markets and their relationship with the population that inhabits these spaces and their socioeconomic and migratory conditions. The study demonstrates how the immigrant population's presence in these neighborhoods configures the territorial evolution at a spatial level, the population composition in demographic terms, and the social relations from an actual and symbolic perspective.","PeriodicalId":44990,"journal":{"name":"Revista INVI","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44978351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in countries such as the Dominican Republic, these neighborhoods are part of the informal market responsible for 75% of housing production. Because they powerfully shape the urban pattern of the city of Santo Domingo, a new analysis approach is necessary. For some researchers, the existence of these barrios in our cities indicates that these neighborhoods are crucial for the definition and development of contemporary urbanism. Their inhabitants are capable actors able to embrace significant transformations, particularly in terms of sustainability. In line with this approach, this article offers a study of four Dominican slums based on three categories of analysis: the inhabitant’s capabilities, the compact urban structure of informal settlements, and the practice of eco-citizenship. For these purposes, a qualitative methodology was deployed using ethnographic research tools: participant observation over time and systematic description of spaces and situations. The results show that even if these informal settlements have characteristics compatible with urban sustainability, they are little recognized and dependent on internal and external socio-spatial depreciation.","PeriodicalId":44990,"journal":{"name":"Revista INVI","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43611045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the existence of a large potential of land able to be recycled, this has still been happening sparsely in Latin American cities. The projects that have been completed, few, have been called into question. In turn, the programs to revitalize the historic centers and re-densify peri-central areas cannot be seen as initiatives for urban regeneration, in the sense that they consisted mainly in promoting dynamics that highlight tourism and culture, and intensive real estate development, respectively. Nevertheless, to conclude that there are no valuable experiences of urban regeneration in the region would be an error. These are found under different modalities, and rather in peripheral working-class neighborhoods, where comprehensive urban improvement programs are being carried out. Decentering the gaze towards these initiatives may contribute in reassessing the general vision towards urban regeneration in the region.","PeriodicalId":44990,"journal":{"name":"Revista INVI","volume":"35 1","pages":"38-61"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42573387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on the experience of Barcelona and its surroundings, highlighting the methods and instruments used in urban practice. In most cases, with different names but with equivalent purposes, it responds implicitly to this objective. It can be distinguished two periods that have a similar way of doing, using similar instruments of intervention. One is based on the return of the city and the other on the sustainability as development basic principle. This critical appraisal allows us to define some specific elements to consider in the future urban project program, both in terms of strategy and tactical intervention. All this brings us closer to a renewed model of regeneration, the urban regeneration 2.0.","PeriodicalId":44990,"journal":{"name":"Revista INVI","volume":"35 1","pages":"199-217"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46141129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article provides evidence that under this conception a polysemy of public actions (non-neutral or depoliticized) and some social initiatives are promoted and applied in dealing with very partially diverse urban problems. The article analyzes experiences of public interventions carried out between 1970 and 2020 in consolidated urban fabrics in Mexico’s capital city, promoted with more or less intensity by social collectives in working-class neighborhoods downtown, the historic center, and self-built quarters in the urban periphery. Beyond the neutral discourse of urban regeneration and alleged comprehensive interventions, in the practice sectoral policies or real estate ventures that, although sometimes converge in a single territory, and are not comprehensive nor coordinated or do not necessarily benefit the majority of society. The article collects the results of various investigations carried out in the last two decades on urban and housing policies in different urban areas.","PeriodicalId":44990,"journal":{"name":"Revista INVI","volume":"35 1","pages":"20-37"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47451657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From a qualitative approach, it studies the different modes of public intervention aimed to create the “business environment”, including tax benefits, investments in infrastructure, transportation, urban space and equipment; and the discursive framework put into play to transform the images and senses that bear upon these areas of the city. The article proposes a methodological crossover to render an account of the specific forms that public action assumes in the public-private articulation. In this way, it allows to provide content to more abstract theoretical categories, such as urban entrepreneurship and actually existing neoliberalism, and at the same time reflect on the processes of urban governance.","PeriodicalId":44990,"journal":{"name":"Revista INVI","volume":"35 1","pages":"91-114"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45408090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From the case of Ecuador, it is analyzed how progressive governments applied policies in the field of social housing and urban development. This article tracks the scales of application these social policies had regarding neoliberalism, from the point of view of the violence and contestations that the process provoked. In Quito, families organized to obtain the promised homes after years of waiting. In Guayaquil, police violence displaced entire neighborhoods to achieve urban renewal through an ecological plan. In Portoviejo, from the earthquake of 2016, the center was converted, and the houses were moved to the periphery. From an historic, spatial, and qualitative methodology, this analysis shows the limitations of the proposals of the progressive governments and the popular organization to avoid displacement towards the peripheries","PeriodicalId":44990,"journal":{"name":"Revista INVI","volume":"35 1","pages":"34-56"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45518433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While international studies have recently mentioned the importance of studentification as trigger of physical, social, economic and cultural effects in traditional residential neighborhoods, Latin-American contributions on this topic are still few. From these premises, this paper aims to analyze the phenomenon of studentification by emphasizing the dissolution of community links, the economic heterogeneization of the neighborhood and the creation of a specific real estate market for the student sector as the main dynamics produced by their arrival and as facts that could be connected to economic policies of housing. In order to do so, the article employs a methodology based on combined quantitative and qualitative data from a fieldwork-based survey. Outcomes confirm the existence of common elements with other study cases, that, together with other specific ones, are explainable by the origins of both neighborhoods.","PeriodicalId":44990,"journal":{"name":"Revista INVI","volume":"35 1","pages":"109-129"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70290868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
