In this setting there is a need for very accurate tracking and registration techniques and an intuitive and useful interface. This is especially true in AR interfaces for supporting face to face collaboration where users need to be able to easily cooperate with each other. We describe an accurate vision-based tracking method for table-top AR environments and tangible user interface (TUI) techniques based on this method that allow users to manipulate virtual objects in a natural and intuitive manner. Our approach is robust, allowing users to cover some of the tracking markers while still returning camera viewpoint information, overcoming one of the limitations of traditional computer vision based systems. After describing this technique we describe its use in prototype AR applications.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"18 7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114536103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have developed a method to calibrate stereoscopic optical see-through HMDs based on the 3D alignment of a target in the physical world with a virtual object in the user's view. This is an extension of the single point active alignment method (SPAAM) (Tuceryan and Navab, 2000) developed for monocular HMDs. Going from the monocular to the stereoscopic optical HMDs for calibration purposes is not straightforward. This is in part due to the perceptual complexity of the stereo fusion process bringing up completely new challenges including the choice of the shape of the virtual object, the physical target and how to display the virtual object without any knowledge of the characteristics of the HMD and eye combination, i.e. the projection model. We have addressed these issues and proposed a solution for the calibration problem which we have validated through experiments on the see-through HMD system described in (Sauer et al., 2000). By experimenting, we have found the appropriate type of virtual objects and physical features to be used in the 3D alignment. Furthermore, we have measured how good the alignment and calibration actually are.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125658088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, conventional optical see-through displays cannot present mutual occlusion correctly since the synthetic objects always appear as semi-transparent ghosts floating in front of the real scene. In this paper, we propose a novel display design that attacks this well-known unsettled problem. Our optical see-through display with mutual occlusion capability has the following advantages: (1) since the light-blocking mechanism is embedded in the display and no additional setting is needed, it can be used anywhere, e.g. outdoors; (2) since incoming light can easily be cut off in any situation, virtual images keep their original intended colors, e.g. black; (3) since the light-blocking mechanism is separated from the display for color graphics, most existing see-through displays can be employed. We also describe our prototype display, which has confirmed the effectiveness of the approach.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130467535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The infrared senders stream localized data, thus effectively augmenting areas of space with localized information. The user is immersed in a rendered 3D-world that is transmitted from a remote site. To acquire this 3D description we apply bi- and trinocular stereo techniques. The challenge is to compute dense stereo range data at high frame rates, since participants cannot easily communicate if the processing cycle or network latencies are long. Moreover, new views of the received 3D-world must be as accurate as possible. We address both issues of speed and accuracy and we propose a method for combining motion and stereo in order to increase speed and robustness.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128964317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Augmented reality (AR), the overlay of computer-generated graphics over a real-world scene, provides a possibility to solve this problem. The technical problems associated with this approach, such as viewing of the scenery within a common focal range on the head-mounted display (HMD) or latency in the display on the HMD, have, however, kept AR from widespread usage in CAS. The concept of the Varioscope AR, a lightweight head-mounted operating microscope used as a HMD, is introduced. The registration of the patient to the pre-operative image data, as well as pre-operative planning, take place on VISIT, a surgical navigation system developed at our hospital. Tracking of the HMD and stereoscopic visualisation take place on a separate POSIX.4-compliant real-time operating system running on PC hardware. We were able to overcome the technical problems described above; our work resulted in an AR visualisation system with an update rate of 6 Hz and a latency below 130 ms. It integrates seamlessly into a surgical navigation system and provides a common focus for both virtual and real-world objects. First evaluations of the photogrammetric 2D/3D registration have resulted in a match of 1.7 pixels on the HMD display. The Varioscope AR with its real-time visualisation unit is a major step towards the introduction of AR into clinical routine.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121172752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Once the occluding objects have been segmented by hand in selected views called key-frames, the occluding boundary is computed automatically in the intermediate views. To do that, the 3D reconstruction of the occluding boundary is achieved from the outlined silhouettes. This allows us to recover a good prediction of the 2D occluding boundary which is refined using region-based tracking and active contour models. As a result, we get an accurate estimation of the occluding objects. Various results are presented demonstrating occlusion resolution on real video sequences. We define a virtual camera, through which views of graphics objects are generated, attached to the real camera by specifying image locations of the world coordinate system of the virtual world. The virtual camera is decomposed into calibration and motion components in order to make full use of graphics tools. The projective motion of the real camera recovered from image matches has the function of transferring the virtual camera, and makes the virtual camera move according to the motion of the real camera. The virtual camera also follows the change of the internal parameters of the real camera. Real experiments show the performance of the algorithm.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130131134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to have a working AR system, the see-through display system must be calibrated so that the graphics is properly rendered. The optical see-through systems present an additional challenge because we do not have access to the image data directly as in video see-through systems. This paper reports on a method we developed for optical see-through head-mounted displays. The method integrates the measurements for the camera and the magnetic tracker which is attached to the camera in order to do the calibration. The calibration is based on the alignment of image points with a single 3D point in the world coordinate system from various viewpoints. The user interaction to do the calibration is extremely easy compared to prior methods, and there is no requirement for keeping the head static while doing the calibration.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126831876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
