The visitor meets a virtual man, who seems to have emotions and who tries to get in contact by talking and asking questions. The application consists of augmented stereo videos, which are projected on a wall projection screen. The visitor sees himself as if in a 3D mirror, but with a new virtual person walking beside him. The augmented man reacts to people by approaching them or avoiding them. This paper gives a complete overview of the exhibition and presents the artistic concepts and the technical realization. After explanations about our motivation and background ideas, the modelling and the behavioural coding of the virtual man are described. Rendering aspects, like multi-texturing and 3D augmented videos are discussed in detail. The determination of the positions of the visitors is achieved by processing the images of a camera fixed on the room's ceiling. Combined with the stereo front-facing cameras, we show how occlusions between the real person and the virtual man can be handled. The system works in real-time on a single machine with three video input streams and two graphic outputs.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132043495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An electronic compass can be a valuable sensor in an outdoor augmented reality system because it provides absolute heading estimates. However, compasses are vulnerable to distortion caused by environmental disturbances to Earth's magnetic field. These disturbances vary with geographic location and are not trivial to model. Static calibration methods exist but these require an explicit initial calibration step and do not adapt to changing distortion patterns. This paper describes in detail an autocalibration method that compensates for changing compass distortions. With minimal user input, it automatically measures and adjusts the calibration table used to correct the compass output. Autocalibration uses redundant heading information computed from rate gyroscopes. We demonstrate that autocalibration converges to solutions similar to a distortion table that was manually measured with a mechanical turntable. With autocalibration, an electronic compass can provide useful measurements even as the user walks around through areas of varying magnetic distortion.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"11 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125765771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We call this setup an \"augmented workspace\". The user sits at the table and performs a manual task, guided by computer graphics overlaid on to his view. The setup serves as a testbed for developing the technology and for studying visual perception issues. The user wears a custom video see-through head mounted display (HMD). Two color video cameras attached to the HMD provide a stereo view of the scene, and a third video camera is added for tracking. The system runs at the full 30-Hz video frame rate with a latency of about 0.1 s, generating a stable augmentation with no apparent jitter visible in the composite images. Two SGI Visual Workstations provide the computing power for the system. In this paper, we describe the augmented workspace system in more detail and discuss several design issues.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"163 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125906275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This concept is extended to bridge multiple user interface dimensions by including multiple users, multiple host platforms, multiple display types, multiple concurrent applications and a multi-context (i.e. 3D document) interface into a heterogeneous distributed environment. With this architecture, we can explore the user interface design space between pure augmented reality and the popular ubiquitous computing paradigm. We report on our design philosophy, which is centered around the notion of contexts and locales, as well as the underlying software and hardware architecture. Contexts encapsulate a live application together with 3D (visual) and other data, while locales are used to organize geometric reference systems. By separating geometric relationships (locales) from semantic relationships (contexts), we achieve a great amount of flexibility in the configuration of displays. To illustrate our claims, we present several applications, including a cinematographic design tool which showcases many features of our system.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"9 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126195759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was found that it was necessary to set the left and right optical axes of the stereoscopic imaging system to be parallel to one another, and likewise for the display system. It was also found that, for AR applications handling real spaces at short distances, it was necessary to align the optical axes of the imaging system with the optical axes of the display system in order to avoid spatial perception errors. We refer to this as a 'parallax-free' system. Based on these studies and experiments, a parallax-free stereo video see-through HMD with a wide field of view was developed. It was also confirmed experimentally that a small displacement of the entrance pupils of the imaging system along the axes to the exit pupils of the display system does not cause serious spatial perception errors. By displacing the position of the entrance pupils of the imaging system by 30 mm, we have downsized the HMD to a thickness of 36 mm and lightened it to 340 g. The HMD was then applied to an actual AR system and its usefulness was verified.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129738008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Progress in hardware miniaturization is enabling the development of wearable testbeds for such applications, providing sufficient computing power for the demanding AR tasks. Rockwell Science Center has assembled a wearable testbed for AR applications, comprised only of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware components. The system is designed to be worn like a jacket, with all the hardware attached and affixed to a vest frame (Xybernaut) with concealed routing of cables under Velcro channels. Two possible configurations allow the system to be used either in a stand-alone mode (the Intelligent Tetherless Wearable Augmented Reality Navigation System, or \"itWARNS\") or to be linked to a larger-scale multi-modal user interface testbed (the Wearable Immersive Multi-Media Information System, or \"WIMMIS\"). Completely tetherless operation is made possible by wireless digital connections as well as analog video and 3D audio connections over radio frequencies (RF). This paper describes these two testbed configurations, as well as some of the AR applications developed on this testbed.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132312276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These benefits will be even greater when augmented reality systems become mobile and wearable. However, to minimize the problem of clutter and to maximize the effectiveness of the display, algorithms must be developed to select only the most important information for the user. In this paper, we describe a region-based information filtering algorithm. The algorithm takes account of the state of the user (location and intent) and the state of individual objects about which information can be presented. It can dynamically respond to changes in the environment and the user's state. We also describe how simple temporal, distance and angle cues can be used to refine the transitions between different information sets.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126752700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a common special case, which we show significantly simplifies tracking. The result is a practical, reliable, vision-based tracker. Furthermore, the tracked plane imposes a natural reference frame, so that the alignment of the real and virtual coordinate systems is rather simpler than would be the case with a general structure-and-motion system. Multiple planes can be tracked, and additional data such as 2D point tracks are easily incorporated.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131990750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dealing with this problem is particularly important in mobile AR environments, where the tracking accuracy of the user's head can change frequently and dramatically as she moves between areas with radically different tracking systems, such as in and out of buildings. We introduce the notion of level of error filtering, analogous to level of detail culling in 3D graphics systems, to help programmers build interfaces that automatically adapt to changing registration errors.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128681631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
