Fraunhofer-IGD aims to develop a system accompanying a tourist while he visits a city. Whenever he desires information the system is supposed to offer information about the environment. This requires the determination of the location. Appropriate results are delivered by the global positioning system (GPS). However, they do not offer information about the line of sight of the tourist. Therefore, a video stream is used. It enables comparison with an underlying GIS. Association of the images with spatial data is necessary as the system is established in an urban environment which cannot be changed for example by markers. As soon as the content of the image coincides with the information of the GIS the exact location of the tourist and the line of sight are determined. The paper describes an approach matching information of a real image with generated images of a city model.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"146 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115739755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using light head-sets and hand-held or worn computing equipment, users can roam their daily working environment while being continuously in contact with their computer systems. For AR to work properly in a large factory, new system architectures have to be designed with consideration of the special requirements imposed by AR. In particular, AR requires real-time facilities to track the user's position and viewing direction. In the past, various carefully calibrated sensing devices have been used for this purpose, including magnetic trackers and active LED systems. Research is now focusing on computer vision-based methods. It is our hypothesis that, in the future, the most successful indoor approaches will combine local (user-worn) vision-based tracking methods with global user tracking schemes from fixed (wall-mounted) sensors, using mobile wireless networking technology to allow the user-worn system to communicate with the globally available sensing infrastructure in an intelligent building. We propose the concept of \"AR-ready\" intelligent buildings which provide built-in tracking services via different sensing modalities.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121127519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The geometric registration is one of the most important problems because virtual objects should be superimposed on the right place as if they really exist in the real world. The vision-based registration is achieved by estimating a position and an orientation of camera(s) by tracking markers in the real world. The proposed method realizes a robust tracking of markers using stereo images and a camera orientation obtained by the inertial sensor.","PeriodicalId":448772,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Augmented Reality (ISAR 2000)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120936028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
