The surge of research on this predominant form of translation in everyday life has brought to light the\u0000 communicative, pragmatic, and semiotic aspects as well as the technical constraints for subtitling taboo words. Previous research\u0000 has primarily taken a quantitative method, discussed issues that justify their results, and suggested possible outcomes from a\u0000 potential receiver’s point of view. While contributing to existing related literature, this paper argues that there is a need for\u0000 a thorough, detailed examination of translation options in subtitling taboo words. The paper presents a three-layered typology of\u0000 methods, strategies, and techniques, which provides a comprehensive description of audiovisual translators’ options. Following a\u0000 bottom-up/top-down approach, the proposed typography is then put to the test in a corpus-based case study comprising six movies\u0000 and their professional subtitles broadcast on Portuguese televisions.

The study of the\u0000 two Spanish versions published during the dictatorship will show that Zola’s controversial novel went through an exercise of\u0000 self-censorship and metacensorship which aimed mainly at silencing a clear anti-religious sentiment among the French peasant\u0000 community depicted in the original text, seen as unacceptable under the catholic and agrarian society ruled by Franco.

Sydorenko
\u0000 In 2019, Yuval Harari, an Israeli historian and bestselling author, appeared in the center of a media debate\u0000 provoked by the discovery of considerable differences between the English text of his 21 Lessons for the 21st\u0000 Century and its Russian translation. A comparative study of the English and Russian texts of the book featured in\u0000 this paper revealed five major issues which turned out to be sensitive for the Russian censorship, namely, homosexuality,\u0000 liberalism, U.S.S.R.–U.S. “tug-of-war,” Putin and Putin’s Russia, and Putin’s aggression against Ukraine and Georgia. It is in the\u0000 presentation of these topics that Yuval Harari’s English text suffered essential transformation and reduction in the Russian\u0000 edition. The conducted analysis contributes to the long-lived debate about the author’s and the translator’s responsibility before\u0000 their readers, and the boundaries, beyond which mutilation of the source text no longer allows regarding the resulting text as a\u0000 translation. The author argues that the escalating information wars targeted at people’s minds in the twenty-first century impose\u0000 ever-increasing requirements to authors and translators of such books as Yuval Harari’s 21 Lessons for the 21st\u0000 Century in terms of intellectual integrity and professional ethics.

Carreira
\u0000 Transcreation is a practice with a status that has to date not been consolidated in the field of Translation\u0000 Studies. While some authors consider that the term brings little value to the discipline (Bernal Merino 2006; Gambier and Munday 2014), others define transcreation\u0000 as a service involving the creative adaptation of marketing and advertising content (Pedersen\u0000 2014; TAUS 2019) or as a strategy adopted in creative areas like AVT (Malenova 2017; Chaume 2018), localization\u0000 (Mangirón and O’Hagan 2006; Crosignani and\u0000 Ravetto 2011) and literary translation (Lal 1996; De Campos 2013). The above definitions reflect the perspectives of the language services industry and\u0000 academia. However, the points of view of individual language professionals have not usually been considered when conceptualizing\u0000 transcreation. The purpose of this paper is to address these perceptions by adopting a social qualitative approach by means of an\u0000 instrument called “The DTP Survey.” The results of this survey seem to point to a dual definition of transcreation as both a\u0000 service and a strategy, with both approaches being compatible and not mutually exclusive as they have been in previous\u0000 characterizations of the practice.

This paper aims to explore the major dimensions and parameters involved in film song translation.\u0000 Based on previous research on music and translation, this paper proposes a framework for studying film song translation from\u0000 verbal, vocal, and visual dimensions. The verbal dimension involves semantic meaning, metaphors, images, mood, and emotion. The\u0000 vocal dimension includes the number of syllables and musical notes, the length of musical notes, rhyme and parallelism, the rise\u0000 and fall of the melody, and the segmentation of a line. The visual dimension covers the plot, characters, and background\u0000 pictures. This paper uses this framework to analyze the Chinese translation of Amazing Grace in the film\u0000 Forever Young to demonstrate how film song translation can be flexible in tackling verbal, vocal, and visual\u0000 restrictions and possibilities.
