\u0000 This study investigates a special category of euphemism, i.e., euphemizers (Farghal 2012). It makes a key distinction between euphemism which is normally engineered to mitigate the impact of a\u0000 certain specific expression in a structure through substituting it by a milder one, and euphemizer which is seen as a scene-setter\u0000 for and an impact-softener of the entire topic or discourse in any given communicative situation. As far as the Politeness\u0000 Principle (Leech 1983) and the Cooperative Principle (Grice 1975) are concerned, the study shows that euphemizers in Jordanian Arabic have been found to be\u0000 exploited to generate particularized rather than generalized conversational implicatures or floutings as to achieve certain\u0000 communicative politeness-related purposes, such as softening the overarching negative force of the entire discourse, soothing the\u0000 fury of interactants, showing respect, high-esteem, friendliness, warmth, and hospitability. These purposes emerge as the raison\u0000 d’être behind such a pervasive “socio-discoursal deodorization.” Analysis also shows that the pragmatic translation proved to be\u0000 an appropriate, but to a large extent, a dominant strategy that has aptly been opted for in dealing with many cases that match\u0000 with English, whereas the deletion or zero-translation strategy, to a lesser extent, has been applied to unmatchful ones.

This paper investigates how learner\u0000 corpora and their research contribute to the teaching and learning of translation and interpreting. It starts with a review of the\u0000 evolvement of learner corpora in translator and interpreter training. Drawing on data from the Chinese/English Translation and\u0000 Interpreting Learner Corpus (CETILC), a learner corpus developed for the study of lexical cohesion, the paper introduces three\u0000 case studies to illustrate the possibilities of exploring learner data through human annotation, machine-facilitated human\u0000 annotation, and finally human-supervised/edited machine annotation. The findings of the case studies suggest the complexity of\u0000 learner language and its intricate relationships with various factors concerning the learner, text, and task. The paper ends with\u0000 a discussion of the great potentials of purposely made learner corpora such as the CETILC in translator and interpreter training,\u0000 as well as the application of learner corpora in (semi-) automatic processing of learner texts.

Previous studies have elaborated much on\u0000 the representation of the socio-cultural connotations in dialectal speech. However, the value of dialect may not be confined only\u0000 to its socio-cultural connotations. Drawing on insights from sociolinguistics and systemic functional linguistics, this study aims\u0000 to uncover the representation of the English dialect of Pygmalion in its Chinese translations and the possible\u0000 reasons why it is represented as such in the Chinese context. By quantifying the shifts in Eliza Doolittle’s dialect voice, the\u0000 analysis shows that a local variety or varieties of colloquial register were adopted to recreate the dialectal variety in Chinese\u0000 translations of Pygmalion. The local variety provides a better interpretation of the functions and stylistic\u0000 significance of the source dialect. The recreation of the source dialect in the translated texts of Pygmalion\u0000 results from the mediation of the translator’s positioning and what has been established by the receptor system’s literary\u0000 conventions, social hierarchy, language ideologies, and the roles of literary translation.
\u0000The “partial translation” of Inuktitut-language lyrics in the Indigenous film Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (directed by Zacharias Kunuk, 2001) has been interpreted as a means of challenging outsiders to understand the film “emically,” meaning from insiders’ perspectives. On this interpretation, Atanarjuat is linguistically exclusionary, because the challenge of partial translation effectively excludes most outsiders from a full understanding. But given the problem of language shift in Indigenous communities, we should not expect Indigenous films to be linguistically exclusionary in general, or they would exclude young Indigenous insiders along with outsiders. We should instead expect Indigenous films to adopt an inclusionary approach to subtitling, consistent with projects of language revitalization. To see what form such an approach might take, I analyzed three Indigenous films from Taiwan in which speech in Atayalic languages is subtitled in Mandarin. Staggered over three-and-a-half decades, these three films index the subtitling approach as a function of concern about language shift. I found that all three films were fully, not partially translated, but that the two films made in a context of concern about language shift were subtitled pedagogically. The two pedagogically subtitled films are “devices” for the pedagogy of Atayal, the most widely spoken Atayalic language. This result from Taiwan suggests that a pedagogical approach might be common in the subtitling of Indigenous films in settler societies around the world.

The target text examined is the Italian translation of the book by Ευγενία Φακίνου (Evghenía Fakínou), Αστραδενή (Astradení), translated as Stregata dalle stelle by Claretta Candotti (publishers Κέδρος [Kédros] in Greece and Crocetti Editore in Italy). In applying Mixed Methods, my analysis follows Lieven D’hulst’s Translation History model, based on some of his eight Latin loci (quis, quid, ubi, quibus auxillis, cur, quomodo, quando, cui bono), with the aim of examining translation agency. In particular, I try to highlight the interaction between the author, the translator, the publishers, and the institutions promoting translation. Moreover, exploring sociological approaches to translation, I attempt to evince how Pierre Bourdieu’s notions of habitus and capital may have played a role in the translational choices of these agents. Most of the data collected derives from a tailor-made questionnaire (Annex I). The answers to the questionnaire, as well as the interview material, are exemplified through targeted, yet necessarily limited, textual analysis. The conclusion highlights the surprising lack of synergies between the translation agents in this particular Greek-Italian context: the deficient communication between author and translator, lack of institutionalized cooperation between Greek and Italian Publishers, and underdeveloped institutional framework for bilateral, state-sponsorship of Greek-Italian literary translations, although the Italian publisher obtained European funding.

The purpose of the analysis is to determine in what way the mechanisms of\u0000 conceptual metonymy may be utilized for the purposes of poetry translation. For this reason, those passages of the translated poem\u0000 will be analyzed which deviate from the original in such a way that the semantic material of the deviating passages exhibits the\u0000 characteristics of metonymy, namely a specific conceptual configuration between an Idealized Cognitive Model (Frame) and its\u0000 parts. The analysis revealed 61 metonymic relationships between the target- and the source text, of which 46 in total (75.4%)\u0000 reveal a contiguous relationship between two parts of an ICM, indicating that this metonymic principle of configuration may\u0000 present a considerably more flexible translation strategy for poetry translation than the substitution of an entire ICM with one\u0000 of its parts or vice versa.
