This time, using the Seville PRESEEA corpus, we have analysed the frequency of the seseante and dento-interdental pronunciation patterns that coexist in this city, and we have correlated them with linguistic, social, and individual parameters. Our data showed that this variation process was mainly influenced by closeness of [s] and [θ] in the immediate phonetic context, and by the educational attainment level, the age, and the sex of the respondents. The analysis per surveyed subjects indicated that most of them combined both variants.

Previous research has shown that velarization patterns are the result of speakers’ sensitivity to phonotactic distributions (Brown 2006; Bongiovanni 2022). This study examines a different result of pattern generalization: hypercorrection. The production of bilabial word-internal coda stops was analyzed in a corpus of sociolinguistic interviews from Mérida, Venezuela. Variation between retained, deleted and velarized variants ([aseptáɾ], [asetáɾ] and [asektáɾ]) is constrained primarily by age and education. While velarization was the preferred variant among older speakers regardless of their educational attainment status, for the younger cohort it was speakers in the lower educational attainment group who favored it. These linguistic patterns reflect known societal changes regarding access to education in Venezuela (and therefore, contact with the standard variety) and show that under the pressure of a prescriptive rule, speakers default to a non-normative generalized pattern.

This characterization is based on the system proposed by Sudo (2013) and shows that Sudo’s two notions of epistemic bias and evidential bias are necessary and sufficient to characterize the conventional non-propositional meaning associated with the three kinds of a poco questions in Mexican Spanish: the a poco positive polarity question codes a negative epistemic bias and a [+positive] or [+negative] evidential bias; the a poco negative polarity question with inside negation codes a positive epistemic bias and a [+negative] evidential bias; and the a poco negative polarity question with outside negation codes a positive epistemic bias and a [−negative] evidential bias.

Specifically, this article presents the results from an analysis of the written conversations of a\u0000 specific community formed by Valencian adults fluent in English. Taking a computer-mediated, discourse-centred ethnographic\u0000 approach to online discourse, the study has shown that, in this specific trilingual online community of language teachers,\u0000 language choice and the choice of a specific written variety is intimately related to audience. The group members mix Catalan,\u0000 English and Spanish regularly, their language choice and code-switching strategies serving to establish in-group solidarity,\u0000 familiarity and lessen face-threatening acts. Findings show that the learners rely mainly on their L1 pragmatic\u0000 knowledge to employ the T/V in the L2. Despite having relatively good grammatical control of T/V, the learners produced frequent\u0000 T/V alternation due to negative pragmatic transfer. In Chinese using V normally conveys speaker’s perception of a high-power\u0000 differential and in relationships that are borderline T or V usage, shifting from T to V can convey deference and tends to\u0000 co-occur with face-threatening or face-enhancing acts. The learners transferred from Chinese their tendency to use V to express\u0000 deference and overutilized this politeness strategy in Spanish regardless of their relationship with the addressee. This\u0000 problematic usage may generate negative social consequences and calls for pedagogical intervention.

This study comprises of ten participants enrolled in an HL Spanish course who completed a background questionnaire, interviews, and writing prompts. Using narrative analysis, this study examines participants’ reflections on their heritage identity, HL exposure, and their investment, experiences and progress in their HL course. Oral data was\u0000 collected during two months of participant observation in Ecuador. The aspectual theoretical analysis of Verkuyl (1993), González (2003) and González and Verkuyl (2017) is applied to the data in order to determine the inherent aspectual\u0000 value of the gerundial verb in the predications. The results show that there is an overwhelming use of terminative predications.\u0000 Additionally, some predications that prima facie seem durative can be interpreted as terminative. This finding can be partially\u0000 explained by particular linguistic phenomena only appearing in the Spanish in contact with Kichwa. Moreover, this study adds\u0000 empirical proof of how relevant discourse is in aspectual representations.
