Both are past perfectives,\u0000 but whereas Portuguese uses the preterit in most contexts, spoken French prefers the present perfect. Peninsular Spanish lies\u0000 between the two, though evidence indicates that the present perfect is becoming the default past perfective (Schwenter and Torres Cacoullos 2008) in a process of ‘aoristic drift’ (Squartini and Bertinetto 2000). How does speaker multilingualism affect this? Semi-structured interviews\u0000 were conducted with second-generation members of the Portuguese diaspora in Andorra. We might expect native competence in\u0000 Portuguese to inhibit aoristic drift in Spanish, since contact has been shown to affect past perfective verb tense in other\u0000 Romance varieties (Gili Gaya 1993; Hawkey\u0000 2020). Contrary to expectations, participants demonstrated aoristic drift. Dense and multiplex migrant networks are,\u0000 however, shown to favour the maintenance of vernacular norms (Milroy 1980), including\u0000 generalising the function of the present perfect.

Para ello se analizan a profundidad los usos del dequeísmo en el corpus El Habla de Monterrey-PRESEEA, compuesto por 108 conversaciones semi-dirigidas de hombres y mujeres mayores de 20 años y de distintos niveles de instrucción. Los resultados del estudio han permitido distinguir que el dequeísmo se emplea en su mayoría por jóvenes, con dos valores semánticos: creador de espacio mental y ejemplificador. Además, la función de creador de espacio mental puede operar como un citativo. Spanish has been historically classified as syllable-timed, meaning its basic unit of prosody is the syllable. However, recent studies have shown that different methods of elicitation can have a significant effect on rhythm metrics (i.e., Arvaniti 2012). The present study measured a series of rhythm metrics from samples of 30 native Chilean Spanish speakers producing spontaneous speech and reading aloud. Using MANOVA analyses, the study determined that method of elicitation had a significant effect on the metrics: while spontaneous speech tended to produce values indicative of accent-timed rhythm, reading aloud yielded values which placed them closer to the syllable-timed rhythm category. This study helps to contribute to the notion that speech rhythm is not necessarily determined by language, but rather that there are other relevant factors.

We employ a cross-sectional design and a written contextualized task in order to explore the differences in rates of subject forms as well as the degree to which factors related to referent cohesiveness constrain the acquisition of subject expression. We include a group of native speakers from the same community of practice for comparison. Our results suggest that, although learners appear to acquire native-like rates of subject forms, this process takes several years. Additionally, the rates of selection of forms were similar for the native speakers and the most advanced non-native speakers, but there remained important differences between these groups across the categories of the referent cohesiveness variable. Finally, we show that the various factors used to operationalize referent cohesiveness do not influence subject expression uniformly.
