{"title":"An Analysis of English Teachers’ Speaking Skill at the Coastal Schools in Bengkulu City","authors":"Ildi Kurniawan","doi":"10.29300/lughah.v7i2.1672","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29300/lughah.v7i2.1672","url":null,"abstract":"This study aims to illustrate the speaking skills of English teachers on the coastal school of Bengkulu City as well as the factors that influence the speaking skills. This research was a descriptive-qualitative research which was also a continuation of previous research on students' speaking skills in the coastal area. The subjects of this study were English teachers who attended school, namely English teachers at SMAN 6 Kota Bengkulu, SMAN I Kota Bengkulu and SMAN 7 Plus Kota Bengkulu, SMPN 7 Kota Bengkulu, SMPN 1 Kota Bengkulu, SMPIT Iqra 'Kota Bengkulu, SMPN 15 Kota Bengkulu. Data that has been obtained in the form of audio-visual recordings when the teacher spoke English, as well as an interview recording related to the speaking skills of the English teacher. The data obtained were analyzed, interpreted and concluded as findings by using the Interactive Model technique namely reduction, display, drawing a conclusion. The results of this study indicated that the English teachers’ speaking skills at the Bengkulu City coastal school was at a moderate level. Fluency in speaking was the main problem faced by these teachers. In addition, grammar also became an obstacle for them. While the identified factors that couldinfluence the English teacher's speaking skills were the internal factors of English teachers themselves who often used Indonesian language when teaching rather than English itself with the reason that children would easily understand the message or subject matter when compared to English. Thesis is used in educational area, especially in university, as a requirement in completing an academic degree. As one of the most important thesis part is called abstract. The use of abstract is essential in some scientific works, online research, directory, seminar, and call paper. In IAIN Bengkulu, students are obliged to write an abstract as an integral part of their theses. Because of its importance, abstract must be written using the correct form and following the rule of abstracting.This study used descriptive qualitative research. It describes how the students write an abstract based on the rule. As a result, the researcher found some errors on the students’ abstract in terms of organization, content, and language. In addition, the researcher found many grammatical errors. Students also tended to make mistake related to the standard form of abstract. In experimental group the highest score gained by the students was 90 and the lowest score was 60. While in control group the highest score was 75 and the lowest score was 35. The students of two groups had different achievement vocabulary after treatment. The students‘ vocabulary achievement in experimental group was increasing and the score was high, but the control group the students’ vocabulary achievement was still low. It meant that there was a significant difference on students’ vocabulary achieved by students who have been taught using English movie assisted role-playing technique. In line with the result: the researcher suggested that English movie with role-playing technique to be used as an aid to teach students vocabulary mastery. The object of this research is a novel with title Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling. This research was using qualitative as the methodology and the data was collected by checklist data sheet as an instrument. The checklist consisted of 21 items which represent the moral value base on its types. This research uses Linda theory. The result of data analysis shows that there are 89 items moral value in the novel and all value can be application in Indonesia morality by using 5 value from Character Education in K13. This is a classroom action research. It was done in genre writing class. There were 23 students. Three instruments were applied in this research such as observation, fieldnote and test. From the observation result, it could be seen that there was the students’ activeness and the increasing ability of the students in using grammar for certain text type. The fieldnote results also showed that the amount of the students asking in the class increased, the ability to make appropriate title for certain text type, the use of appropriate vocabulary and grammar increased too. From the last intrument, test, also found that there was significant increase of students’ average score from the first to the third cycle. The score was 64,71 and 82.
