The instructional scaffolding was perceived to enhance students’ approximation to control spoken and written text. The data were gained from in-depth interviews with three teachers who teach non-English Department students who join in Kampung Inggris Rafflessia (KIR) Rejang Lebong Course. To address the goal, there were two research questions formulated in this study; 1) What do teachers think about teaching speaking using instructional scaffolding? and 2) How do teachers implement instructional scaffolding in speaking class? The 30-minute interview was conducted twice with open-ended questions. Then, the gathered data were analyzed qualitatively using phenomenological method. Teachers’ instructional scaffolding provided many chances for the students to be active in the learning process. By using the scaffolding, the teachers perceived that the learning process becomes more effective. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif (strukturalisme) dengan pendekatan sosiologi sastra. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: (1) gambaran masyarakat Inggris pada tahun 1792-1797 tidak berbeda jauh dengan gambaran yang disuguhan film Sense and Sensibility, yaitu penerapan tradisi primogeniture. {"title":"Semantic Deviation in Classical Poem Interpretation: A Perspective from Beginning Training Course Students in TEFL","authors":"Andriadi Andriadi","doi":"10.29300/lughah.v7i2.1670","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29300/lughah.v7i2.1670","url":null,"abstract":"Manipulation of language used in poems to state poet’s idea is basically aimed to give aesthetic value, help the readers to easily understand, and give complete image of the text meaning. However, in a real application in the classroom, the language style in poems causes language deviation and covers the poet’s idea. Readers should read the poems explisitly in deep interpretation to get the meaning. Therefore, this study describes an eight-week (135 minutes a week) poem stylistics of semantic deviation analysis for a half –semester beginning training course (poetry class) for the use of literature in an EFL context. The research was conducted at the fourth semester students of English Program of IAIN Bengkulu in academic year 2017/2018 that consisted of 31 students. This descriptive analysis aimed to describe students’ exploration of semantic deviation in classical poem interpretation. The result showed that Wordsworth’s The Solitary Reaper used various kinds of semantic deviation in forms of language stylistics of figurative languages, namely: (1) semantic Bizarreness of expression that consisted of oxymoron and paradox; (2) transference of meaning that consisted of synecdoche, metonymy and metaphor; (3) Misrepresent the truth that consisted of hyperbole and irony. In a real analysis of the poem, the students were excellent in identyfying the kinds of language deviations. Then, they were very good at understanding the poem literally. It created in quantitative design as a quasi- experimental research. The population of this research was all senior high school graders (they were three classes) and two classes as the sample, the E1 as control class and E3 as experimental class. The techniques of data collecting were pre-test and post-test and supported by questionnaire. The results were taken from post-test that consist of five aspects, they were total score, highest score, lowest score, mean score, and standard deviation. Based on the final result of the five aspects above, the researchers found that reward gave effect for the students’ motivation in learning English structure. This classroom action research (CAR) designed to improve the listening ability of students by using audio-visual media. The subject of this research are students of English, University of Bengkulu Diploma Program who take the course Listening For Lecture . This study was conducted in two cycles of progress namely; planning, observation, action and reflection. Moreover, collaborative learning methods are also applied to stimulate student activeness in the classroom. The results showed that the use of audio visual media is able to improve the results of listening course. In addition, the students also Become more motivated and enthusiastic during the lecture which can be seen in the group discussion stage that implement colaborative learning. Generally it can be concluded that audio visual media can improve the focus and concentration of students in listening courses. Population of this research are odd semester students (3rd semester) who take lecture on English Morphology course. There are two classes’ namely experimental class which is treated with mind mapping technique and control class which is taught conventionally. After applying mind mapping technique in experimental class, the result is significantly different. The experiment class achievement from the test is better than the result of the test in the control class. Moreover based on the observation, the students from the class treated with mind mapping technique proved to be more motivated and enthusiastic in understanding the material.
