In light of the ubiquitous rise of machine translation (MT), the current article considers how\u0000 definitional approaches to translation that preceded the MT era, and were formulated with human translation in mind, correspond\u0000 with today’s MT. The article engages with two influential definitional strands in the discipline: a-priori prescriptive\u0000 definitions, and descriptive definitions focused on the reception of translations. The general compatibility of both definitional\u0000 approaches with MT, notwithstanding some empirical and moral criticisms pertaining to the first approach, encourages us to\u0000 conceive of MT as a full-fledged translational object of inquiry, fully at home in translation studies. CT refers to commercial translation performed on such platforms by multiple agents (translators, editors, subject-matter experts etc.) simultaneously, via concurrent access. Although the practice has recently gained more ground, research on CT is scarce. The present article reports on selected key findings of a study that investigates translators’ experiences with CT via a survey of 804 professional translators working in CT mode across different commercial platforms. This article examines user conceptualisations of privacy and their implications for the understanding of human-MT interaction. It draws on the privacy literature, on an online forum and on a survey of MT users. The findings show that while users have concerns about sharing information such as passwords, images, and contact details with MT providers, some of them can conversely see MT as a technology that provides privacy. The article discusses these findings in relation to the informational and relational dimensions of privacy. Translation is the mechanism whereby an ‘esotouristic’ or new-ageified text travels in ready consumability, a commercializing process that asserts forms that themselves are ideological, and dramatically shifts ‘mirrors for princes’ and works considered ‘high literature’ to works of mass marketability. The branding of yogic and Kabbalistic texts, and of authors Kahlil Gibran, Baltasar Gracián, Rumi, and Sun Tzu, is analyzed in this light. I object to the ‘timeless classic’ positioning of texts that deterritorializes, dehistoricizes, and deculturizes, and map these publications as forms of manipulation, especially exoticizing, genre shifting, radical recontextualizing, and allegorizing. We conducted an experiment in which 62 participants read\u0000 the Chinese translations of 16 previously unseen English print advertisements. Two parallel Chinese versions were prepared for the\u0000 experiment, one with second-person reference and the other without. The participants were first asked to read the translations and\u0000 indicate which version they liked better. Two weeks later, they were divided into two groups and asked to rate their memory of the\u0000 two Chinese versions. With language services being a daily necessity, the country has a well-established translator accreditation system. To prepare for crises, Australia has also published multiple official documents with clearly laid-out management plans. All these factors seem to have contributed to Australia’s successful fight against the first two COVID-19 waves in 2020 and 2021. However, the country’s crisis communication has actually experienced constant failures to reach its culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. Taking the Australian state of Victoria as a case study, this article examines the inadequacy of COVID-19 related translation services and analyses its impact on CALD communities. Florida also has a high concentration of\u0000 Spanish-speaking voters with Limited English Proficiency (LEP), making Spanish-language voting information crucial. Inadequate translations\u0000 of voter information may misrepresent voter eligibility for LEP Spanish-speaking former felons in Florida. Using a parallel corpus, this\u0000 article’s central research question investigates how semantic shifts occur in Spanish translations of “felony” and “felon” in online voter\u0000 information for seven Florida counties. The results reveal a number of misrepresentative semantic shifts in both human- and\u0000 machine-translated Spanish voter information. We performed a study in which translation students translated a negative review containing opinions that they may potentially find offensive. Based on previous findings pointing to punishment and restoration of justice as the most common behaviors of anger, we predicted that angry translators would manipulate the text in an attempt to punish the author and/or mitigate the offensive content. We operationalized such manipulation by identifying attenuating and emphasizing strategies in target texts. While no significant differences were revealed between baseline and post-read anger levels, sentiment analysis tools revealed angry moods when applied to participants’ written opinions. Significant differences were also found for the strategies applied with more occurrences for attenuation than emphasis. Survey data generally support the view that translators feel underpaid and that money matters remain a chief ethical and pragmatic concern, but appropriate guidance is almost entirely absent from introductory textbooks on the translation profession and documentation prepared by industry associations remains unsatisfactory. Focusing on the translation industry in the United Kingdom, this conceptual paper explores constraints that limit price formation practices, and argues that translators feel under threat from disruptive technologies, Uberisation, and non-professional translation, now more than ever. We explore the complex interaction between status, internal and external perceptions, and regulation, and illustrate their push-pull relationship with rate-setting within a range of industry ‘educators’, uncovering the ways in which translators themselves, translation associations, and academic institutions directly and indirectly impact upon rate-setting practices. While the use of cutting-edge experimental tools such as eye trackers has drawn\u0000 increasing scholarly attention and accelerated the progress in understanding the complex mental processes involved in the\u0000 reception of multimodal AVT products, relatively less attention has been devoted to the importance of establishing a theoretical\u0000 framework or cognitive model that can explain and predict the behaviours observed in empirical experiments.
