And what, or rather who, stands in the way of such possibilities? In order to get close to these questions, this article examines Austin Clarke's last published book of poetry, In Your Crib. I argue that through the figure of the elder persona, Clarke explores the limitations of respectability politics—manifested through the adoption of liberal reformist politics by former Black radicals—as well as the problematics of attachments to linear teleological perspectives of Black radical politics.RÉSUMÉ:Aujourd'hui, plus d'un demi-siècle après les émeutes raciales à l'Université Sir George Williams, quelles sont les possibilités d'action radicale pour les Noir·e·s au Canada ? Qu'est-ce qui – ou plutôt, qui est-ce qui – empêche de telles possibilités de se concrétiser ? Pour s'approcher de ces questions, cet article se penche sur le dernier recueil de poésie publié par Austin Clarke, In Your Crib. Je défends l'idée qu'à travers le personnage de l'ainé, Clarke explore les limites de la politique de la respectabilité – l'adoption de politiques libérales réformistes par d'anciens radicaux noirs –, ainsi que les problèmes liés à l'adhésion des politiciens noirs radicaux à des perspectives téléologiques linéaires.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"11 1","pages":"123 - 136"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75084642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article revisits the curating process through critical, decolonial and resistive approaches and allows a rare glimpse into the archival records related to the 1969 event, Canada's most notorious student uprisings, when students took over the seventh-floor faculty lounge and ninth-floor computer centre to protest anti-Black racism in the classroom at Sir George Williams University.By revisiting these events fifty years later, the exhibition asked, What do these archival materials say to us today? The exhibition challenged existing cliched accounts of the affair through deliberate practices of subversion. In exchange, it highlighted lesser-known narratives, through images, sounds, newspaper accounts, official documents and oral testimonies that offer alternative curating methodologies that brings the archives to life.RÉSUMÉ:Cet article propose une lecture de Protests and Pedagogy: Representations, Meanings and Memories, une exposition commémorant le 50e anniversaire des émeutes raciales à l'Université Sir George Williams. L'article examine le processus organisationnel de l'exposition à partir d'une approche critique, décolonialiste et « résistive », et permet pour une rare fois de jeter un coup d'œil sur les archives des évènements de 1969, qui constituent le soulèvement étudiant le plus célèbre au Canada : l'occupation par les étudiant·e·s du salon des professeur·e·s, au 7e étage, et du centre d'informatique, au 9e, pour dénoncer le racisme contre les Noir·e·s qui avait cours dans les locaux de l'Université Sir George Williams.En revenant sur ces évènements cinquante ans plus tard, les commissaires posent la question suivante : « Que nous disent, aujourd'hui, ces documents d'archives ? » Par des méthodes délibérément subversives, l'exposition conteste les comptes rendus truffés de clichés sur cette affaire. En retour, elle met en lumière des récits moins connus, grâce à des images, des sons, des comptes rendus de journaux, des documents officiels et des témoignages oraux – moyens alternatifs d'organiser une exposition qui donnent vie aux archives.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"37 1","pages":"67 - 93"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84804674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is underground because it is often buried by mainstream Quebec history. When the FLQ (Front de libération du Québec), Quebec nationalism, and the October Crisis of 1970 are discussed, little or no reference is made to the occupation. That omission is telling, because people of my generation have grown up hearing about those events as centrepieces of “recent” Canadian history, and because, at the very least, the occupation shares the timeline. The occupation, in fact, preceded the October Crisis, and there is anecdotal evidence of a kind of cultural overlap. As a Black writer in Quebec, I am attracted to minor characters and suppressed histories, and this informs part of my interest in the occupation.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89093271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is focused on those working and studying in and at the interstices of the university—those for which the university itself was made to exclude; those for whom the university cannot begin to know how to include. By attending to the events of the 1969 Sir George Williams Affair, which took place in Montreal, Canada, as well as the events preceding it, I consider how the occupation of the ninth floor computer centre by the university's Black students operated within a legacy of refusal that can be traced back to an earlier history of resistance, specifically, to acts of marronage. Moreover, this article will seek to advance how the siting of spaces for protest, resistance, and solidarity by Black students illustrates how a lineage of marronage is at once a continuance of a project and practice of an ethics of care.RÉSUMÉ:Cet article s'intéresse avant tout à la relation entre la vie des personnes Noir·e·s et l'université. Il se concentre sur les personnes qui travaillent et qui étudient à l'université et dans ses interstices – ces personnes que l'université elle-même a été amenée à exclure ; ces personnes que l'université serait incapable d'inclure même si elle avait l'intention de le faire. Revenant sur les émeutes raciales de l'Université Sir George Williams, qui ont eu lieu en 1969, à Montréal, au Canada, ainsi que sur les évènements qui les ont précédées, je considère que l'occupation du centre d'informatique du 9e étage par les étudiant·e·s noir·e·s de l'Université s'inscrit dans une tradition de refus, qui se rattache elle-même à une histoire antérieure de résistance, celle du marronnage. Cet article défend aussi l'idée que les lieux choisis pour les manifestations, la résistance et la solidarité par les étudiant·e·s noir·e·s permettent de comprendre la tradition du marronnage à la fois comme la continuité d'un projet et la pratique d'une éthique de la bienveillance.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"9 1","pages":"137 - 149"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87185676","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In her open letter to the US Black Studies academic community, Sylvia Wynter (1994) spoke about the problem of \"no human involved\" (\"NHI\") in the policing and incarceration of Black bodies as being pertinent for how Black studies was positioned institutionally. This same white supremacist governance and surveillance \"NHI\" exists in universities on both sides of the Atlantic. There is something very wrong with the system of which I am a part that persistently and consistently bars BIPOC bodies and theory and only avails our presence and thought a marginal position on the proviso that the status quo of whiteliness (Yancy 2008) is not disturbed. Nothing really changes in terms of anti-BIPOC racism. Rather, it remains strangely the white supremacist (settler) colonial same within Canadian race-evasive multiculturalism and UK 'post-race' racism.RÉSUMÉ:En partant de la nécessaire question « Pourquoi moi ? », je m'intéresse à un système qui demeure inaccessible aux corps et aux théories des personnes issues des minorités visibles ou culturelles. Dans une lettre ouverte à la communauté universitaire étatsunienne des études sur les Noir·e·s, Sylvia Wynter (1994) parlait du problème d'« absence d'intervention humaine » (no human involved, NHI) dans l'interpellation et l'incarcération des personnes noires, problème qu'elle jugeait utile pour comprendre la position des études sur les Noir·e·s dans l'université. Cette « absence d'intervention humaine » dans la gouvernance et la surveillance blanches et suprémacistes existe à l'université des deux côtés de l'Atlantique. Il y a quelque chose de très problématique dans le système dont je fais partie, qui interdit obstinément et sans relâche son accès aux personnes et aux théories issues des minorités visibles ou culturelles et n'accepte notre présence et nos idées que dans la marge, et à la condition qu'elles ne troublent pas le statuquo de la blanchité (Yancy, 2008). Rien ne change vraiment en ce qui concerne le racisme envers les minorités visibles ou culturelles. Curieusement, le racisme est toujours le même, colonial, blanc et suprémaciste (des pionniers), tant au sein du multiculturalisme canadien prompt à esquiver les questions de race que dans le racisme « postrace » qui a cours au Royaume-Uni.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"38 1","pages":"185 - 192"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74046764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on auto-ethnography, intersectionality and discourse analysis, and case studies, this article makes visible this process, from suspicion to parole, the filters which move people with more privilege away from an increasingly permanent offender identity and move people with more marginality towards it. These filters are termed “intersectional filtering points”: their disparate impact emphasized to illustrate how disadvantaged people become offenders. Fundamental neoliberal logics show how this crisis persists invisibly: marginalized people who become offenders are, therefore, seen as archetypal risk groups whose characters require regulating, undermining the widely held notion of a criminal justice system which impartially responds to illegal acts.RÉSUMÉ:Cet article raconte la crise invisible de la façon dont le système de justice pénale canadien en est venu à s’appuyer sur des populations gravement marginalisées dans la composition de qui est puni et qui est jugé punissable. S’appuyant sur l’auto-ethnographie, l’intersectionnalité et l’analyse du discours, les études de cas montrent comment, de la suspicion à la libération conditionnelle, il existe des filtres qui éloignent les personnes plus privilégiées d’une identité de délinquant de plus en plus permanente et y déplacent des personnes plus marginalisées. Ces filtres sont considérés comme des «points de filtrage intersectionnels» : leur impact disparate est souligné pour illustrer comment les personnes défavorisées deviennent des délinquants. Les logiques néolibérales sous-jacentes montrent comment cette crise persiste de manière invisible : les personnes marginalisées qui deviennent des délinquants sont considérées comme des groupes à risque archétypaux dont les caractères nécessitent des notions réglementées et largement répandues d’un système de justice pénale qui répond de manière impartiale aux actes illégaux.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"144 - 167"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89030021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Incarcerated Workers’ Self-Organizing Contributes to Abolition Movements against Global Apartheid","authors":"C. Vance","doi":"10.3138/topia-43-004","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3138/topia-43-004","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT:Incarcerated workers across Canadian prisons have organized and conducted strike actions. These actions, however, have been rejected by the Canadian state, on the basis that the incarcerated workers are not legally employees. The court ruling (Guérin et al. v. Canada 2018), while accepting evidence of the prisoners’ material hardships from their low pay and from reprisals for striking, excluded them from the legal protections of employees and thus devalued the prisoners’ labour. The self-organizing efforts reveal the levels of inequality experienced by incarcerated workers in the ruling order of global apartheid, “in which race and mobility feature as primary variables for which heightened security and militarization are the answer” (Besteman 2020, 1). This article discusses the effects of prisoners’ organizing in the larger context of social justice. In so doing it examines cultural texts that document interactions between organizers inside and outside prisons and their contribution toward alternatives to carceral cultures. This article argues that the cultural production by prisoners and their supporters express the conditions in which prisoner self-organizing is necessary for larger social transformation. The creation and nurturing of collective relationships with one another, both within and across prison walls, clarify common grounds for liberation struggles, and connect envisioned freedoms to overthrow the various forces that enclose communities and hold significant numbers of us captive.RÉSUMÉ:Les prisonniers au Canada qui travaillent dans le système carcéral, les travailleurs incarcérés, organisés en formant un syndicat et en organisant des grèves. L’État a rejetéces efforts d’auto-organisation en jugeant quels travailleurs ne sont pas légalement des employés. La décision du tribunal, tout en acceptant la preuve des difficultés matérielles des prisonniers à cause de leurs bas salaires et de représailles de la part des employés, les excluait de la protection juridique des employés et dévalorisait ainsi le travail des prisonniers. Les efforts d’auto-organisation des prisonniers sont pris en compte dans le contexte des actions publiques des prisonniers et de leurs partisans, de l’inégalité dans l’ordre de l’apartheid mondial auquel participe le Canada et des productions culturelles et des partisans qui expriment et influencent l’auto-organisation des prisonniers pour la transformation sociale. La création et le soutien de relations collectives entre les détenus dans les prisons et la traversée des prisons clarifient les bases communes des luttes de libération et établissent un lien entre les libertés envisagées et le renversement des diverses communautés qui nous captivent.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"15 1","pages":"44 - 58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84405420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
