In the Legacy of Marronage: The Sir George Williams Affair and Acts of Refusal, Protest, and Care

Abstract

ABSTRACT:At its core, this article is concerned with the relationship between Black life and the university. It is focused on those working and studying in and at the interstices of the university—those for which the university itself was made to exclude; those for whom the university cannot begin to know how to include. By attending to the events of the 1969 Sir George Williams Affair, which took place in Montreal, Canada, as well as the events preceding it, I consider how the occupation of the ninth floor computer centre by the university's Black students operated within a legacy of refusal that can be traced back to an earlier history of resistance, specifically, to acts of marronage. Moreover, this article will seek to advance how the siting of spaces for protest, resistance, and solidarity by Black students illustrates how a lineage of marronage is at once a continuance of a project and practice of an ethics of care.RÉSUMÉ:Cet article s'intéresse avant tout à la relation entre la vie des personnes Noir·e·s et l'université. Il se concentre sur les personnes qui travaillent et qui étudient à l'université et dans ses interstices – ces personnes que l'université elle-même a été amenée à exclure ; ces personnes que l'université serait incapable d'inclure même si elle avait l'intention de le faire. Revenant sur les émeutes raciales de l'Université Sir George Williams, qui ont eu lieu en 1969, à Montréal, au Canada, ainsi que sur les évènements qui les ont précédées, je considère que l'occupation du centre d'informatique du 9e étage par les étudiant·e·s noir·e·s de l'Université s'inscrit dans une tradition de refus, qui se rattache elle-même à une histoire antérieure de résistance, celle du marronnage. Cet article défend aussi l'idée que les lieux choisis pour les manifestations, la résistance et la solidarité par les étudiant·e·s noir·e·s permettent de comprendre la tradition du marronnage à la fois comme la continuité d'un projet et la pratique d'une éthique de la bienveillance.
