Black Radicalisms in Canada and the Politics of Respectability in Austin Clarke's In Your Crib

ABSTRACT:Now, over five decades after the events at Sir George Williams College, what are the possibilities for Black radical action in Canada? And what, or rather who, stands in the way of such possibilities? In order to get close to these questions, this article examines Austin Clarke's last published book of poetry, In Your Crib. I argue that through the figure of the elder persona, Clarke explores the limitations of respectability politics—manifested through the adoption of liberal reformist politics by former Black radicals—as well as the problematics of attachments to linear teleological perspectives of Black radical politics.RÉSUMÉ:Aujourd'hui, plus d'un demi-siècle après les émeutes raciales à l'Université Sir George Williams, quelles sont les possibilités d'action radicale pour les Noir·e·s au Canada ? Qu'est-ce qui – ou plutôt, qui est-ce qui – empêche de telles possibilités de se concrétiser ? Pour s'approcher de ces questions, cet article se penche sur le dernier recueil de poésie publié par Austin Clarke, In Your Crib. Je défends l'idée qu'à travers le personnage de l'ainé, Clarke explore les limites de la politique de la respectabilité – l'adoption de politiques libérales réformistes par d'anciens radicaux noirs –, ainsi que les problèmes liés à l'adhésion des politiciens noirs radicaux à des perspectives téléologiques linéaires.
