Here, I explore how Haneke attended to the experiences of aging and disability, and how these categories inform intimate relations, in this case that of an aging middle-class heterosexual couple living in Paris. As the deterioration of the body intensifies, what does it mean for love itself to intensify to the point of surrendering to the demand of subjecting the one you love to death. Thinking alongside the work of Sigmund Freud and Kaja Silverman, I ask after what may happen if and when love has the capacity to demand upon one the annihilation of their beloved. How is the beloved remembered, preserved, and forgotten as they age, and what might it mean to see love as not merely a cure but also a thing that has the capacity to kill?","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"212 1","pages":"-"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76158666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From the start, the virus’s circulation through human bodies intermingled with all the ways human lives had been defined by neoliberalism’s economizing rationality. To unpack the convergence of the pandemic with neoliberal rationality, this article examines the financial advisory discourse produced by credit and fintech companies at the start of the pandemic, focusing on Equifax, Experian, and Mint. This messaging was replete with expressions of care, along with promises of institutional assistance. However, reading further it became clear the companies offered mostly financial self-help advice. The immediate turn to this type of messaging suggested how much the financial system depended on a collective continuation of the individual’s sense of moral responsibility for financial self-management and creditworthiness, and especially diligent debt-payment.RÉSUMÉ:Aux États-Unis la menace de la COVID-19 comme problème de santé publique était indissociable de la menace financière. Dès le début de la pandémie, la circulation du virus dans les corps humains s’est interposée avec toutes les façons dont les vies humaines ont été définies par la rationalité économisante du néolibéralisme. Pour éclaircir la convergence de la pandémie avec la rationalité néolibérale, le présent article examine les messages d’avis financiers produits par les entreprises de crédit et de technologie financière pendant la pandémie, notamment Equifax, Experian et Mint. Ces messages étaient emplis d’expression de soutien, avec des promesses d’aide institutionnelle. Cependant, une lecture plus attentive permet de voir que ces entreprises ont surtout offert des conseils visant l’auto-assistance financière. Le recours immédiat à ce type de message indique le degré auquel le système financier dépend sur la continuation collective du sens de responsabilité morale des personnes pour gérer eux-mêmes leurs finances et leur capacité de crédit, et particulièrement pour continuer à payer leurs dettes.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"56 1","pages":"175 - 187"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82674488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this question, I explore the unsatisfactory distinctions I have made between African feminisms and Black feminisms because they dangerously replicate the colonial division of humanity. As such, I focus on the distinction to think through how we can imagine the future of Black studies in Canada. In so doing, I consider correspondences and interactions that I have been engaged in as spaces where challenging thinking happens in ways that negotiate, rethink, and unsettle institutional and disciplinary limits. I ponder the possibility of not thinking singularly about the subject of Black studies and moving toward a space where we can hold sight of our differences.RÉSUMÉ:Le présent essai traite de la question des études noires au Canada par rapport aux études africaines. À cette fin, l'auteure analyse les distinctions insatisfaisantes qu'elle a faites entre les féminismes africains et les féminismes noirs, car celles-ci reproduisent dangereusement la division colonialiste de l'humanité. Elle se concentre sur cette distinction pour imaginer l'avenir des études noires au Canada. Ce faisant, elle considère les correspondances et les interactions qu'elle a eues comme des espaces où une pensée neuve a permis de négocier, de repenser et de déstabiliser les limites institutionnelles et disciplinaires. L'auteure réfléchit à la possibilité de ne pas traiter isolément les études sur les Noirs et d'adopter une vision qui tienne compte des divergences de vues.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"28 1","pages":"175 - 184"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83807497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dryden","doi":"10.3138/topia-2019-0051","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3138/topia-2019-0051","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT:Black studies both addresses the epistemic dilemma Eurocentrism makes of Blackness while also understanding Blackness as relational, situating Black activism and intellectual life as intricately connected. Yet discussions of Black studies have generally been excluded from the fields of science and medicine. In this article, I focus on three considerations of Black studies in these fields: Dalhousie University's rotating senior research chair in Black Studies, which moved into the Faculty of Medicine in 2019; a reflection on the 1968 Sir George Williams Affair, which highlighted the harms anti-Black racism in science studies has upon Black students and communities; and lastly, an examination of who gets to do medicine in Canada. In the almost two-hundred-year history of medical education in Canada, systemic barriers remain in place that obstruct Black people from participating in medical training. I seek to explore how Black studies in medical education is more than an accounting of brutality and atrocities. Science and medical studies also include Black experiences through method, thought, and intervention, thus creating anew.RÉSUMÉ:Les études noires abordent le dilemme épistémique que pose l'eurocentrisme à propos de l'identité noire, tout en comprenant que l'identité noire est relationnelle et que le militantisme et la vie intellectuelle des Noirs sont intimement liés. Pourtant, en sciences et en médecine, on ne discute habituellement pas des études noires. Dans le présent article, l'auteure se concentre sur trois sujets d'études noires dans ces domaines : la chaire de recherche principale en études noires de l'Université Dalhousie, une chaire rotative qui a été transférée à la Faculté de médecine en 2019; l'affaire Sir George Williams survenue en 1968, affaire qui a mis en lumière le tort fait aux étudiants et aux communautés noires par le racisme contre les Noirs dans les études en sciences; enfin, l'accès aux études en médecine au Canada. Depuis les presque deux cents ans qu'existe l'enseignement de la médecine au pays, des barrières systémiques n'ont cessé d'empêcher les Noirs de recevoir une formation en médecine. L'auteure tente d'examiner comment les études sur les Noirs dans le domaine de l'enseignement de la médecine vont au-delà de la brutalité et des atrocités. Les études en sciences et en médecine intègrent également les expériences des Noirs par le biais de la méthode, de la pensée et de l'intervention, taillant ainsi dans du neuf.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"159 - 174"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76107785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Described as Canada's best-known manifestation of anti-Black racism, students occupied the Sir George Williams University in protest of alleged racism toward Black and Caribbean students. While much has been written about this watershed affair, the distinct experiences of women have not received much attention. However, community narratives suggest that women played important active roles. What were women's experiences of this protest, and how did their participation shape the legacy of the event? Featuring an interview with Brenda Dash, dubbed \"a ringleader\" of the affair, this article explores a frontline view of this episode in 1960s student activism. Dash offers an in-depth perspective on her participation in the affair, her arrest, and the trial. This interview lays the groundwork for locating this protest within the broader ideological struggles of the civil rights, Black Power, and social justice movements.RÉSUMÉ:Le présent article-entrevue examine la manifestation étudiante de 1969 à l'Université Sir George Williams d'un point de vue genré. Cette manifestation, durant laquelle des étudiants ont occupé l'Université Sir George Williams pour protester contre le racisme dont auraient été victimes des étudiants noirs et antillais, est réputée pour être la plus connue des manifestations contre le racisme envers les Noirs au Canada. Si cette affaire marquante a fait couler beaucoup d'encre, le rôle particulier des femmes n'a guère retenu l'attention. Pourtant, les récits du milieu semblent indiquer que les femmes ont joué un rôle actif important. Comment les femmes ont-elles vécu cette manifestation, et quel legs leur participation a-t-elle laissé? À partir d'un entretien avec Brenda Dash, surnommée « la meneuse » de l'affaire, cet article présente un point de vue genré et de première ligne sur cet épisode du militantisme étudiant des années soixante. Brenda Dash expose en détail sa participation, son arrestation et son procès. Cette entrevue jette les bases permettant de replacer cette manifestation dans le vaste contexte des luttes idéologiques menées par les mouvements de promotion des droits civiques et de la justice sociale ainsi que par le Black Power.","PeriodicalId":43438,"journal":{"name":"Topia-Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies","volume":"36 1","pages":"48 - 66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84522137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The students at Sir George had been protesting their experiences of discrimination and the university's failure to take seriously their complaints about racism on campus. This discussion explores the significance of the 1969 protests as an intervention in Canadian higher education. It also situates that event in relation to narratives of the radical 1960s and explores the operations of the university as a site of knowledge and power. Recounted here are stories of student life as well as recollections of various faculty members who were on staff during the complex political moment of the late 1960s. These stories of university life are also framed within the happenings and cultural-political shifts in the city of Montreal. This essay uses first person recollection to reorient some of the historical perspectives on such events as the 1967 World's Fair, the civil rights protests in the US, anti-Vietnam war movements, anti-colonial movements and wars of the 1960s, the movement for Quebec independence, and the Sir George Williams University protests.RÉSUMÉ:Voici un compte rendu des événements survenus à l'Université Sir George Williams entre 1966 et 1970.
