The approach used is based on a statistical-heuristic method originally developed for landslides. The analysis is based on a sinkhole inventory from the study area and factor maps on the topics of geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, pedology, and terrain morphology. The hazard map created was validated using a ROC analysis. A prediction accuracy of over 90% was achieved. The hazard analysis was then extended to an area beyond the boundaries of the original study area in order to test the transferability of the analysis. The hazard indices and weightings from the original hazard map were also used for the extended area. Validation of the extended hazard map yielded a prediction accuracy of 60%. This shows the limitations of transferring the analysis to other areas if hazard indices and weightings are not adjusted. The work shows that the method developed for landslides also delivers very good results for the hazard assessment of sinkholes. The methodology presented can improve the assessment of sinkhole risks not only in sulfate karst but also in carbonate karst areas worldwide.</p>","PeriodicalId":43155,"journal":{"name":"Geotechnik","volume":"49 2","pages":"120-131"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2026-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148193959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In practice, the key machine parameters (e.g., frequency, static eccentric moment, and, if applicable, static load) are still largely selected based on experience, although the installation process represents a complex, soil-dependent multi-objective problem. This paper consolidates research on cost-effective, tolerance-compliant profile installation. It presents developments in vibrators and experimental setups for sensor-based process monitoring, optimization criteria, and control approaches for adapting operating parameters. A focus is placed on processes at the profile toe in saturated soil during so-called cavitational driving. Numerical studies (CFD-DEM, SPH) and an instrumented test rig show that the upward motion can cause a pronounced drop in pore water pressure and local liquefaction of the soil beneath the profile toe, explaining the high process efficiency and indicating pathways to improve bearing capacity. In addition, data-driven methods (Dynamic Mode Decomposition) for short-term prediction of ground vibrations as a component of real-time monitoring and control are discussed. Finally, an outlook is given on the DFG project DROPS, which investigates downward forces as well as stiffness requirements of profiles and driving guides to meet installation tolerances.</p>","PeriodicalId":43155,"journal":{"name":"Geotechnik","volume":"49 2","pages":"109-119"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2026-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148193975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new roadway crosses a historically filled and secured old landfill site containing heterogeneous, uncompacted, and in some cases environmentally relevant waste. The aim was to minimize interference with the landfill while ensuring the serviceability of the motorway superstructure. The use of high tensile stiffness geosynthetic reinforcements made it possible to reduce the thickness of the road structure and significantly minimize contact with contaminated landfill material. This was based on multivariate analytical calculations using several methods approved in Europe. The optimized design in a reduced construction consists of knitted aramid geogrids and laid geogrids made of high-strength polyester. In addition, an adsorbing activated carbon mat was used in ecologically critical zones. This report is aimed at shedding light on the systematic evaluation of drillability in bored piles, a topic which can be of paramount importance for the successful completion of any construction project. The main focus is on the correlation of geological and geotechnical influencing factors on drillability, which is examined in various case studies. The analyses of the case studies show that geological and geotechnical influencing factors have a significant impact on the achievable drilling velocities and tool wear. The working principles and drilling performance of the round shank chisels and replaceable teeth are analysed separately, as notable differences were evident for these different tools, especially when taking rock mass properties into account. Based on these results, rotary-piling specific classification systems for tool wear were developed –with the one for replacement teeth being first of its kind. The presented approaches contribute to a stronger consideration of drillability-related factors and key challenges in construction practice—starting from the very beginning of a project as a decisive planning parameter, rather than recognizing drillability as a critical bottleneck during the construction phase.</p>","PeriodicalId":43155,"journal":{"name":"Geotechnik","volume":"49 1","pages":"40-53"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2026-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147563589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Large-scale load tests were used to investigate the load-settlement behavior of groups of four columns and to verify the load-bearing capacity.
