The 5 days school, organized by Politecnico di Torino (Italy), was included in a larger project addressing 17 years old high-school students. Thirtyseven girls actively took part in a summer school, while 167 students (both males and females) were tested as a controlled group. For those who attended the summer school, significant gains were observed in four measures of spatial ability - mental rotation, spatial visualization, mental cutting and paper folding. For a minority of participants, scores on one of these tests, paper folding, were lower when measured at the end of the summer school but this was an exception. Furthermore, when tested several months after the summer school, the gains in spatial ability that were made during the course were maintained indicating stability over time with regard to the improvement in spatial ability. In terms of the experience of taking the course, the feedback provided was very positive and all but one participant would recommend the summer school to other girls at this stage of high school.","PeriodicalId":430095,"journal":{"name":"Eighth International Conference on Technological Ecosystems for Enhancing Multiculturality","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115157970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current research deals with a broad concept of annotation that can be used when working with the clinical textual descriptions from radiology reports as well as with the digital images that are attached to this kind of reports. In this context, the main goal of this paper consists of providing physicians and radiology staff with a technical structure to fully integrate the annotation processes both for clinical texts and their associated medical images. Unlike other annotation approaches, the present proposal primarily has an instructional purpose that allows practitioners to experiment with annotation mechanisms from an academic perspective. The approach proposed is complemented by the Clavy system to retrieve clinical corpora coming from multiple medical repositories and convert them into reconfigurable digital collections. Its application, together with the development of the CARS annotation plug-in, has enabled the instructional deployment of multimedia-based radiology collections, thus making them available as educational resources. A case study has been used to show the potential of this approach and its possibilities to annotate and analyze different examples of radiology reports.","PeriodicalId":430095,"journal":{"name":"Eighth International Conference on Technological Ecosystems for Enhancing Multiculturality","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133690460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results have been very disappointing and, from their publication, one could have the impression that, first, Spanish researchers do not achieve more than a mediocre result in transferring the research to the society; second, female researchers are even less capable of transferring knowledge in a profitable, beneficial way; and third, those activities that do not involve a high economic impact, either on the Society or on the research institutions, do not count for promotion or the consideration of prestige of researchers in this research aspect. However, a close examination of the results with the help of a questionnaire elaborated by researchers belonging to a Spanish feminist association show that the very bad results could in fact be due to the intricate call and the low preparation of the evaluation committees in gender aspects, as well as the immature process in general. The conscious analyses of the results with the help of 513 respondents may help in enriching the next calls, avoiding a second disastrous result, and encouraging female researchers to contribute for advancing towards an equal society, even if no economic values are directly derived from their research.","PeriodicalId":430095,"journal":{"name":"Eighth International Conference on Technological Ecosystems for Enhancing Multiculturality","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134619612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
