Usually, they are simply presented and explained without describing their synthesis. When the synthesis is presented it needs a high number of class hours to teach it. In this article we propose a practical method to teach students the synthesis of different FFs and transparent latches. It starts with a symbolic state transition graph that is aimed to describe FFs and transparent latches. Our method contains very simple steps where the learning process requires a low number of class hours.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127559040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A citation index on the other hand is an index of citations between publications and can be used as a measure of the quality of a paper. In general, a recently published paper tends to be cited less than a paper that was published 5–10 years ago. Similarly, a journal paper or a book chapter is cited more than a conference paper. In this paper, we investigate if there are any other ingredients that contribute to a paper being cited more. The scope of this research is limited to the journals from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Xplore database only. We have used two statistical tests (correlation and significance) to identify the ingredients which affect the citation count.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"7 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120856953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The qualities in the PO are usually closely related to the training that the student has gone through. The attainment of PO must be tracked at every semester and corrective actions must be implemented if the attainment does not meet the performance criterion that has been set. This implies a need for a continuous quality improvement (CQI) process for PO attainment. This paper presents the analysis of PO achievement based on student's achievement in formal assessments for core subjects in the Bachelor of Electrical Power Engineering (BEPE) and Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (BEEE) programmes in UNITEN for four semesters from Semester 1, 2007/2008 to Semester 2, 2008/2009. In general, all POs are attained by both programmes. However, it was observed that with the current performance criteria a decline in soft skills PO achievement was observed. Hence, a new PO attainment strategy was devised and a new performance criterion has been set. This paper aims to highlight the CQI processes in place to analyze the BEPE and BEEE Programme Outcomes attainment.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"318 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122467171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The plan is part of the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) system that is required by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) of Malaysia. DME has implemented OBE approach in the programme for the past 3 years. Throughout the implementation process, the Department has developed ongoing assessment and CQI plan to measure the outcomes and improve the teaching and learning process. This plan, which was first implemented at the end of 2006, has generally shown a positive trend in the teaching and learning process in the programme. This paper also discusses the assessment tools that are used in the continuous quality improvement (CQI) plan. Assessment is one of the important parts in the CQI plan. Direct and indirect measurement methods are used to gather the data which are to be analysed to measure the outcome attainment. The attainment results are used to identify the areas that need to be improved. The assessment plan has been continuously improved to be more effective in measuring the achievement of the OBE implementation in the department.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"173 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113990693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such accreditation would benefit the graduates to look for jobs globally. Outcome-based education (OBE) has become a critical aspect of accreditation requirement and Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Universiti Teknologi MARA has made adaption to both; curriculum and instructional approaches following OBE specifications. OBE is a student-centered learning process that focuses on measuring students' achievement in accordance with the faculty program outcomes based on summative and formative assessments. The faculty has developed several summative assessment tools that are user-friendly to the lecturers using on-shelf technology. These tools are custom-designed to measure student's knowing and doing for the following components: examinable course, course work, laboratories and final year project. The tool for evaluating an examinable course is known as SAMOBEC; acronym for Summative Dynamic Assessment with OBE Compliance. Therefore, this paper describes the utilization of the tool and evaluation for an undergraduate course; ESE352 (Signals and Systems II). This tool would guide lecturers to construct examinable questions structurally based on Bloom's Taxonomy as well as addressing respective course outcomes and program outcomes. The tool would produce outputs that show information about question density on course and program outcomes. Finally, it would provide performance indicators that reflect the students' achievement in addressing the respective course and program outcomes. It is shown that, the systematic approach adopted in this tool has educated and improved academician alertness in designing questions fairly as well as providing them with an insight of their student's attributes.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114361178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new system, dubbed the Preference Based system, uses a computer algorithm to allocate titles to students based on students' submissions of their 10 most preferred titles in order of preference. Three algorithms were developed for this allocation purpose, and they were evaluated by calculation and comparison of the costs of their selection. The Network Flow Optimization algorithm, which was able to produce a selection with the lowest cost, was selected and used to allocate titles for students from Semester 1 of the 2009/2010 academic year. The algorithm was able to ensure that each student got one of their 10 preferred titles and 78.5% of the students got titles that were ranked in their top 3. A survey carried out after the selection exercise confirmed the students' satisfaction and preference of the new system over the previous first come first served system.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121240234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
