As we are well aware, the need to use a practice and application oriented approach in education is paramount [1]. Research on active learning and cooperative groups showed that students grasps and have more tendency towards obtaining and realizing soft skills like leadership, communication and team work as opposed to learning using the traditional theory and exam based method. While this teaching and learning paradigm is relatively new in Malaysia, it has been practiced widely in the West. This paper examines a particular approach whereby students learning wireless security are divided into small manageable groups consisting of black hat and white hat team. The former will try to find and expose vulnerabilities in a wireless network while the latter will try to prevent such attacks on their wireless networks using hardware, software, design and enforcement of security policy and etc. This paper will try to demonstrate whether this approach will result in a more fruitful outcome in terms of students concept and theory understandings and motivation to learn.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131943419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ESDs provide researchers various web services comprised of several types such as scientific communications, collaborations and content publishing. Dependent on the ESDs and their web services, the scholars' research process is evolved accordingly, so as the electronic research (e-Research) process got into birth in which, exploiting the information technologies in the ESDs, scholars initiate their research, drive it, and reach its determined goals. In this paper, after proposing a framework for the e-Research process, the taxonomy of web services in the ESDs is investigated and then, main ESDs are classified based on some primal features in the proposed taxonomy.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125369325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents two design based tutorials aimed at providing a smooth transition in the current traditional education for universities. The design tutorials are implemented on the Altera DE2 board. The first tutorial provides an implementation of a basic microprocessor model and is designed for junior and senior Electrical and Computer Engineering students. The second tutorial is an implementation of Least Frequently Used algorithm and is designed for sophomore students. The assessment of these tutorials shows an increase in students' knowledge on FPGA, embedded systems, SoC, and software-hardware co-design. Further, some students showed a great interest in using FPGA boards in their senior design project, while others expressed interest in taking a full 2–3 hour laboratory course to increase their knowledge on SoC. The design database and tutorial documents are available for public and can be downloaded from the University's website.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126415964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previously, laboratory assessments method was merely based only on lab report submitted by each group of students and the procedure is inconsistence as each module consists of different area of electrical engineering fields and involves many lecturers from various disciplines in the FEE. Furthermore, there were no specific guidelines for grading the report and lecturers would rely on their experiences, resulting large variance of judgments in giving the marks. To overcome such problem, an OBE assessment tool known as Laboratory Sensor Performance Evaluation Course Tool (LAB-SPECT) has been designed recently for evaluating laboratory modules. This tool has taken into account additional student's attributes that represents teamwork skill, practical skill and ethical in the lab. With rubrics table provided, it has successfully facilitated lecturers to evaluate students fairly in terms of their Group Related Skills (GRS) besides than the laboratory report. Each of the assessment section in this process is addressing the respective the course outcome (CO) and program outcome (PO). The output plots produced by this tool would be used as indicators for Continual Quality Improvement (CQI) recommendations.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115812961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in introducing the software to these students there are constraints faced by the instructors in Faculty of Electrical Engineering UiTM Pulau Pinang. The constraints are space, time and software facility. An interactive and animated teaching aid has been developed to cater to the constraints. Direct and indirect assessment methods may be used in evaluating the achievement of PO. Direct assessment method normally uses data from final exams, test, quizzes, assignments or projects for the evaluation. Other methods that are used include course survey, peer review, lecturers' observation and industry survey. This paper discusses the strategy that the Mechanical Engineering Department employed to evaluate the PO for its Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Programme. Initially the department only use direct measurement method to evaluate the programme outcomes. Upon receiving feedback from several constituencies, the department decided to revise and come up with a new strategy to evaluate the programme outcomes. In this strategy, only the courses that would contribute significantly to the PO are selected. Suitable measurement tools are identified and the attainment targets or the performance criteria are set. The relevant data is then collected, analysed and compared to the attainment target. If the target value is not attained, suggestions for improvement will be made and implemented. This method is expected to give a more reflective and accurate result while reducing the need to carry out too much data collection and analysis.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128539950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Engineering education has to take into account the emerging trend and rising challenges demand graduate engineers to be well-prepared to provide an innovative solution which is long term and sustaining to foster and support life-long learning. The quality of human resource is among the important factors which will determine the pace and success of a country's transition towards the knowledge-based economy. This is in response to the government's call towards developing competent engineers to support the Malaysian recent human resource policy and in view of the emergence of a multi-disciplinary and multi-mode education confronting the Malaysian education practice. This creates a challenge for engineering education to promote a broad-based undergraduate program to secure easy mobility and flexibility for the graduates to adapt to these new and revolutionary technologies. Ultimately, engineering education has to reflect on the emerging trend and rising challenges which demand graduate engineers to be equipped with long-term innovative solutions and ready to embark on life-long learning. It is therefore crucial that institutions of higher learning address this issue of engineering education curriculum in order to meet the expectations of the stakeholders. This paper seeks to examine the current status of a design course embedded in an engineering curriculum for the undergraduate civil engineering course in Malaysian universities. It will give an account on the implementation of the current curriculum for a design course and how it is consistent with the government's policy. This paper will also investigate the strategies of enhancing the teaching and learning approaches of a design subject and propose several pedagogical measures in improving the existing civil engineering curriculum.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115278612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
