Several studies found that gender inequality exists in certain sectors of the economy. The purpose of the study was to identify the factors that influence the career choice among female and male students in technical schools. The study found that the gender imbalance in technical and vocational fields is mainly due to career making decision process.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127515926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study consists of a survey on engineering employability skills which should be owned by graduates or new engineers hired by employers in Selangor, Malaysia. The questionnaire method has been chosen in order to determine the importance of engineering employability skills possessed by new engineers. The skills were measured using 5-Likert scales and the level of importance of employability skills were analysed by statistical mean. The finding shows the priority of employability skills that employers would look for when evaluating and selecting new engineers. This paper examines the skills that affect the selection of new engineers and employers' point of view towards recruiting new engineer in Malaysia. Hopefully, this will help the employers' decision making on selecting the right candidate for an engineering post in their organisation. Engineering graduates also benefited from this paper as their preparation to enter the working world. The respondents of the survey are employers in a limited geographical area of Malaysia and only those in higher position in organization who have the autonomy to hire new engineers for the organization, familiar to project and know what kind of employability skills needed in the future for the organisation, and knowledgeable on skills needed for engineers to operate necessary equipment successfully.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116597206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objectives set for the engine are to achieve a line-by-line checking of intermediate steps and the final answer as well as assigning a score to each step that is reflective of its correctness. The framework is designed by adapting and applying basic operations and techniques from textual information retrieval. The development of this framework is the result of the findings from research undertaken by previous researchers from our institution. It serves as a theoretical background to formalize our current research in this area.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115713324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These soft skills are demonstrated in one of the event organized by Faculty of mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) which is kwon as Formula Varsity. The event had been participated by a number of IHL in Malaysia and received good feedback from participating institution, staff and students. In order to study the effectiveness of the event and relate it to the soft skills elements, soft skills matrices for each team has been developed and discussed. Furthermore, nature of discipline, perception of society and knowledge of women in engineering is also limited among them. Previously, most women only chose courses that somehow related and perceived by community as suit to them. Nowadays, the history is gradually changed; engineering can also be learned and conquered by women. Women are also accepted and rewarded for their contribution. In Malaysia, this kind of change took place around the end of 1990s when the government announced the Seventh Malaysia Plan (RMK 7); which stresses on the need of additional human power in science and technology. With the urge, women realized that they should rise to the expectation and immersed themselves in this area; which promises more work opportunity in the future. This paper aims to investigate the tendency of women in choosing engineering courses while pursuing their study in Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). The analysis has been done based on the number of female students during enrolment and total of female graduates on the 1st until 4th UTeM convocation (year 2005 until 2008). Women perception and acceptance towards engineering courses can be seen from the result of the analysis. With that, the causes of those changes will be presented and elaborated for further educational purposes improvement.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134570189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forty students of the subject were exposed to two ill structured problem solving sessions over the Blackboard discussion forums. They also attempted the CCTST (California Critical Thinking Skills Test) test to measure their general critical thinking skills prior to and after the forum sessions. The critical thinking is measured using an adapted model and the progress in the level of critical thinking is checked from first forum to the second. Statistical tests are performed to check if there is a significant progress from the pre-CCTST to the post-CCTST scores. Results indicate from the forum postings that critical thinking has progressed from first forum to the second, and results from the CCTST scores confirms significant differences.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121479701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
