However, universities are still receiving comments from the industry that the graduates are not competent to do hands-on work. Lack of hands-on experience as a result of focusing too much in formal education could have contributed to this scenario. Final year project if carefully structured can be used as a tool to overcome this issue. This work describes the effort made to enhance final year students' hands-on learning experience through final year project in industry. Two different projects have been conducted in a beverage can manufacturing company. Both projects have similar intentions which are to improve the productivity level and to minimize material wastes. Duration of one year has been spent in constructing and implementing suitable approach to achieve the project objectives. The final year project conducted has not only contributed to a significant cost savings to the company, but also has added such a valuable learning experience for the students. The final year project has successfully provided them a substantial amount of hands-on experience that complements the textbook knowledge they learned in class. The challenges faced in the implementation of final year project in industry are also discussed in this work.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"165 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123296667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the over use of Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) which computation is purely the mean of raw scores, lacks precision and linearity hence validity required to meet the fundamental criteria of measurement warrants a review. In IHL, the theory and practice of classical test theory, the traditional approach of students' evaluation must be re-assessed. This paper provides an overview of an alternative “modern” measurement as practiced using item response theory with focus on Rasch measurement model. An overview of Rasch measurement model and its key concepts are presented. This assessment model proved to be a better students' assessment method and can be used to validate the CLO of each course. A case study in the College of Engineering, Umm al-Qura', Makkah on students (N=75) was conducted to measure their command of knowledge (Kn) and understanding (uN) for the subject 804431 -Manufacturing Process III; as categorised according to Bloom's Taxonomy disclosed that there is a need to take immediate action where their μPerson measure level is disturbingly low; μperson = −0.29logit. μitem measurement also indicates that the undergraduates encounter significant difficulties in grasping some fundamental engineering principles in extrusion. Only 30.67% (N=23) of the students measured found to be above the itemmeasure ≥0.00 logit. Whilst 6.67% (Nitem=5) of the students were found to be below the Minimumitem measure ≤ −1.03logit. The study shows that SPELA as a model of measurement can provide better estimate of students' ability more accurately based on the CLO as compared to the traditional CGPA method of assessment using raw score.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121028462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What student is able to perform within a realm of technical expertise after the learning process is of utmost importance. Recently, it becomes mandatory for all the higher learning institutions in Malaysia to implement the outcome based education approach to the existing models of their engineering programs. This is because OBE has become the prerequisite for obtaining the accreditation from the Board of Engineers Malaysia and also the Engineering Accreditation Council. It is for this reason that the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA is transforming all the degree programs to embed the OBE approach. This paper intends to present our experience in transforming a course in Control System Design from the classical model to the GPA/OBE hybrid framework. The definition of course outcomes, program outcomes, the mapping of course and program outcomes, embedding of course and program outcomes in the curriculum design and delivery of content and the assessment process are discussed. This design is observed to be capable of offering possible solutions to the few challenges expressed by previous works. In addition, it is found to be able to provide an evidence based platform for the measurement of technical competence and behavioral change in learning, which indirectly reflect the attributes of engineer, as dictated by the accreditation bodies. From the recent assessment, it is found that [36% 39% 25%] of the student population is rated [strong moderate weak] in their ability to apply systematic approach to solve control engineering problem. On the other hand, [6% 27% 67%] of the sampled student population has demonstrated [strong moderate weak] in their ability to make use of in-depth knowledge.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126334759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the hardware-based kits has some demerits such as high initial setup cost, burdensome maintenance, lacks of adaptability to industry evolution, and restricted educational outcomes. This paper deals with a simulation-based education package for laboratory works in Embedded System courses. The package uses the ARM's ARMulator environment that can simulate a simple ARM architecture board in cycle-level. We extended the ARMulator environment into a powerful one that can simulate an embedded system board by implementing various hardware IP models and peripheral simulation programs. The developed education package can be used to train students in Embedded System courses for topics such as assembly and C/C++ programming, processor architecture, memory system handling, peripheral control, system performance, real-time operating system, and development environment with overcoming the demerits of hardware-based kits.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129689786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper focuses on a new and efficient method to the teaching of power system analysis courses to the upper-division undergraduate students. The intent is to present MATPOWER to students as a good instructional tool to complement the teaching of power system analysis courses in the class. This would certainly facilitate the teaching and understanding of the subject matter better. The features and the relative merits which make the package preferred to some of the commercially available software packages, in certain applications, are highlighted in the paper. With self study in mind, the paper is written to simplify the daunting task of carrying out power flow analyses especially on large power networks. One illustrative example is examined in the paper. The power flow solution by the Newton-Raphson method is demonstrated using the conventional approach prior to solving it using the MATPOWER package. The result obtained using the package is guaranteed to be accurate and reasonably fast.","PeriodicalId":426558,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129757071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
