Already in this life, the philosopher tries to free his soul\u0000 from the body in order to acquire true knowledge as the soul is\u0000 progressively becoming detached from the body. Centuries after it was\u0000 written, Plato?s Phaedo continued to play a role for some early Christian\u0000 authors, and this article focuses on three instances where Christian women\u0000 mirror Socrates and/or his definition of philosophy. We find these instances\u0000 in hagiographical literature from the fourth and fifth centuries at\u0000 different locations in the Roman Empire - in the Lives of Macrina, Marcella\u0000 and Syncletica. These texts are all to varying degrees impacted by Platonic\u0000 philosophy and by the ideal of the male philosopher Socrates. As women\u0000 mastering philosophy, they widened common cultural expectations for women,\u0000 revealing how Christian authors in certain contexts ascribed authority to\u0000 female figures.

The\u0000 arguments for and against the moral status of animals are discussed, above\u0000 all the argument from marginal cases. It is argued that sentient animals\u0000 have moral status based on their having interests in their experiential\u0000 well-being, but that there are degrees of moral status. Two interest-based\u0000 approaches are presented and discussed: DeGrazia?s view that sentient\u0000 animals have interests in continuing to live, and that their interests\u0000 should be granted moral weight; and McMahan?s TRIA which similarly\u0000 postulates that animals have interests and that in a given situation we\u0000 should compare the human and animal interests at stake. Finally, the paper\u0000 concludes that the anthropocentric approach to animal ethics should be\u0000 abandoned in favour of the biocentric ethics.

There\u0000 is a certain ambiguity as to whether the distinction of the sexes was\u0000 intended by God and is ?by nature? (as found in Genesis and asserted by most\u0000 Church Fathers) or a product of the Fall. Namely, Christ is described three\u0000 times as ?shaking out of nature the distinctive characteristics of male and\u0000 female?, ?driving out of nature the difference and division of male and\u0000 female? and ?removing the difference between male and female?. Different\u0000 readings of those passages engender important implications that can be drawn\u0000 out from the Confessor?s thought, both eschatological implications and\u0000 otherwise. The subject has been picked up by Cameron Partridge, Doru\u0000 Costache and Karolina Kochanczyk-Boninska, among others, but is by no means\u0000 settled, as they draw quite different conclusions. The noteworthy and\u0000 far-reaching implications of Maximus? theological stance and problems are\u0000 not the object of this paper. In a 2017 paper I attempted to demonstrate\u0000 what Maximus exactly says in these peculiar and oft-commented passages\u0000 through a close reading, in order to avoid a two-edged Maximian\u0000 misunderstanding: to either draw overly radical implications from those\u0000 passages, projecting decidedly non-Maximian visions on the historical\u0000 Maximus, or none at all, as if those passages represented standard Patristic\u0000 positions. Here, I am revisiting this argument, given that the interest in\u0000 what the Confessor has to say on the subject seems to be increasing.

With language as the starting point of its hermeneutic\u0000 task, it commences with an etymological analyses of diverse Indo-European\u0000 words gravitating around the semantic field of the notion of engagement.\u0000 From these introductory insights obtained by an exercise in comparative\u0000 linguistics, devotion and commitment are mapped as two opposite, yet\u0000 inseparable, modes of being of engagement. Both of these modes seem to\u0000 condition engagement in an ontologically disparate manner. While examining\u0000 their fundamental structures, some of the canonical concepts of history of\u0000 philosophy such as being, existence, subjectivity, or world - and also some\u0000 of its constitutive binary oppositions such as body/mind,\u0000 individual/collective, transcendence/immanence, light/darkness and\u0000 sacred/secular - will be reconsidered through the prism of different\u0000 ontological dispositions that devotion and commitment impose respectively on\u0000 engagement. The overall aim of this investigation is to bring forth the main\u0000 existential characteristics of being-engaged, by interpreting the roles of\u0000 who, where, and what of engagement, and in order to provide a fundamental\u0000 conceptual apparatus for a critical ontology of engagement.

Through the\u0000 different texts, the author shows that phantasy (Phantasie) should be\u0000 considered as one of the modifications of pure re-presentation\u0000 (Vergegen?w?rtigung). The article first tries to underline the distinction\u0000 between Husserl?s deliberation on this phenomenon and the traditional\u0000 concept of imagination. Second, it shows the fundamental moments of\u0000 constitu?tional consciousness in order to relate the notion of imagination\u0000 to perceptual apprehension. In the\u0000 first case study, focused on the literary representations of the Christian\u0000 martyrdom from the second and third centuries, special emphasis is placed on\u0000 the demand for the ?manly? or ?masculine? way of witnessing faith. The\u0000 second historical example relates to the creation of a wider ascetic\u0000 movement in the fourth-century Asia Minor, and its specific focus is on\u0000 Macrina the Younger. In her Vita, Gregory of Nyssa distinguishes between\u0000 Macrina?s gender identity based on her virginity on the one hand, and her\u0000 social role as a widow, and ?mother? and ?father? of her monastic community\u0000 on the other. Finally, the focus is shifted towards Dionysius the Areopagite\u0000 and Maximus the Confessor, whose teachings about ecstasy, as a way to\u0000 transcend oneself in the movement towards the loved one, provide the basis\u0000 for establishing a theology of marriage and creating a Christian identity\u0000 based not on sexual or gender roles, but on the uniqueness of human nature.

This\u0000 reality changed in the last ten years, especially in the region of former\u0000 Yugoslavia. Some social movements in this region have started questioning\u0000 the very essence of the economic and social misconceptions of the\u0000 post-socialist condition. This paper first provides an elaboration of the\u0000 very conceptual edifice of the ruling paradigm (hence the object of the\u0000 critique of the three social movements in question), as well as a\u0000 theoretical and methodological framework. It goes on to map out the\u0000 epistemic discursive content of the respective social movements in Belgrade,\u0000 Zagreb and Sarajevo, thereby assessing the conceptual content of their\u0000 critique of the post-socialist transitional paradigm. Starting from\u0000 the thesis that the empiricist trait of Serres? philosophy remains\u0000 underexposed if one simply receives his work as that of a structuralist\u0000 epistemologist, Serres? monograph The Five Senses (1985) is then discussed\u0000 in more detail. Here we see both a radical empiricism all his own and a\u0000 closeness to phenomenology. Nevertheless, perception and language are not\u0000 opposed to each other in Serres. The article aims to posit arguments that confront the claims that Kant was just war theorist. Since that is the most opposed part of Kant’s political philosophy, mostly due to the misleading interpretation of his argumentation, the author presents Kant’s standpoint on the matters of just war and international order and discusses potential ambiguities between Kant’s and his critics’ theories. Furthermore, the consequences of opponents’ arguments considering states of states, world republic and cosmopolitan democracy in contemporary political philosophy are debated.
