The IEEE 802.11 standard allows the use of multiple channels available at the physical layer, but its MAC protocol is designed for a single channel. However, a MAC protocol of a single channel does not work well in a multichannel environment due to the hidden terminal problem. The simulation results show how the MMAC-CR protocol allows a better use of spectral opportunities thereby increasing the throughput of the MANET network.","PeriodicalId":412983,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colombian Communications Conference (COLCOM)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126477898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents the results of tests using several scenarios with different transmission power levels, designed and implemented with OMNeT++. It assessed the average consumption of energy by the nodes, the network frames with interference, the average of backoff and the number of frames received. This allowed seeing the positive impact of the use of topology control on the network.","PeriodicalId":412983,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colombian Communications Conference (COLCOM)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114497449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An important approach to this evolution is the improvement of energy meter management and the implantation of demand response and demand control programs supported by an advanced metering infrastructure. This paper describes the considerations to establish a favorable environment to develop the first step toward Smart Grid, taking like a starting point the deployment of an advanced metering infrastructure system in a major Utility in the south west of Colombia. The design of the communications architecture using Wireless Local Area Networks and ZigBee is presented, along with the performance evaluation of the network model.","PeriodicalId":412983,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colombian Communications Conference (COLCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129401661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Communication tools are used integrated with a Geographic Information System, an online server and the access to data base by means of web services. A set of measuring equipment is connected to the communication system in order to manage a great amount of information and to analyze it, but specially to establish whether the international recommendations are being met or not. It is also possible to know which kind of factors are contributing to radiation level increasing by using NARDA field meters, Spectrum analyzers and other possible equipment, all of them controlled remotely through fixed or mobile terminals. Based on measured points, a continuous surface of radiation levels is plotted on a geographic map by using an interpolation algorithm.","PeriodicalId":412983,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colombian Communications Conference (COLCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114978444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many projects (not only by academia but also by vendors and service providers) have been established to control such electricity using the Internet technology. Accurate OSNR estimation on highly noisy optical transmission link is achieved. Furthermore, the proposed OSNR estimation approach may be digitally adjusted to any Cartesian modulation format such as multilevel phase shift keying and quadrature amplitude modulated optical signals without degrading estimation accuracy. The OSNR estimation methodology is based on kernel density estimation with Gaussian kernels and non-linear least-squares regression (NLLS). Heuristic searches are no longer needed and the process becomes more reliable and robust. Reported results show accurate OSNR estimation with less than 15% error estimation on the simulated OSNR value for different signal modulation formats, exhibiting a more confident estimation system, with comparable results among formats because of the statistical nature histogram instead of the regular counting bins histogram.","PeriodicalId":412983,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colombian Communications Conference (COLCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129878774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
