Accurate detection of image features from outdoor scenes requires clear visibility in computer vision applications. Currently, there has been an augmented attention in the communities of image processing towards enhancing the visibility of outdoor images acquired in specific atmospheric conditions (i.e. fog, haze, mist, etc.). The paper presents a significant methodological review on visibility enhancement techniques degraded by different weather conditions in outdoor environment. In this survey, we categorized the enhancement techniques on the basis of approaches they used to restore the visibility and provide comprehensive description of different methods in each category.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"94 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124163110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Providing universal education to the children who study in low-income schools in urban slums is a great challenge due to lack of educational resources in terms of technology or faculty. Game designers, researchers and educators can explore the entertainment games and add educational content making them more purposeful and beneficial to play. Such games are termed as Serious Games. Our research focus is on investigating the impact of Serious Educational Games (SEGs) on children after its deployment in schools of rural areas. We developed 8–10 games for Class-10 students, which can be used in schools along with the traditional student-teacher classroom learning. In this paper, we examined the deployment and outcome of one of our games on a group (before and after playing game) of students by collecting and analyzing Qualitative and Quantitative data. Survey showed that the students found the game interactive, logical, easy to understand with effective and easy to understand user interface, having positive effect on their performance. Moreover, findings showed that Serious Games could be effectively used along with traditional teaching methods in minority educational institutions.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127283925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lot of efforts have been made in order to minimize the energy consumption in lighting. As a part of it, new energy efficient lights, improved lighting design and advanced lighting controls are evolved. Photovoltaic (PV) is the best solution for the energy requirements in the future. This paper proposes a method to maximize the utilization of available solar energy for the efficient street lighting design. This paper presents the design and implementation of a grid-solar hybrid power supply scheme for LED street lighting. The existing street lighting scheme in a part of the University is studied, simulated on DIALux, a lighting analysis software and the problems are analyzed in detail. In order to overcome the problems, a more efficient lighting scheme is proposed. A prototype scaled down model of the proposed lighting scheme is designed and implemented. This scheme utilizes the solar energy in a more efficient way. A control strategy is developed for switching the lamps between solar and grid supply. The control principles and illumination design of the hardware and software are presented.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"26 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127825000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design is developed with a voice recognition system, which allows the physically disabled person to control the wheelchair by voice command who have issues in hand movement due to ageing or paralysis for joystick controlled wheelchairs. The design also provide some additional features such as obstacle detection for the safe movement and a GSM based navigation system for tracking and sending notifications to increase the usability of the automated wheelchair system. To implement the design, Arduino Mega2560, Easy VR3 speech recognition module, SIM900A GSM module and relay based motor controller circuits are used along with the wheelchair. The designed wheelchair system does not require any wearable sensors for using other biomedical signals to control wheelchair movement (i.e. EEG, EMG, EOG sensors) as reported in several research studies which require complex signal processing techniques done with an extra bulky computing system attached with the wheelchair. In the proposed design, the speech processing is done solely with the available integrated speech processing module (Easy VR3) which removes the necessity of any bulky complex extra computing device. Moreover, the proposed technique is relatively simple and cheaper to implement with the widely used available electronic devices in comparison to other existing techniques which will have a great impact on the societies of developing and under developing countries.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129923035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the development of this signal, a fundamental frequency triangular signal and three times the fundamental frequency sinusoidal signal are used. The combined signal is clipped off at certain point to obtain the proposed modulating signal. The design of the signal is done to keep output total harmonic distortion of the converter low, reduce the low order harmonics of the converter output voltage and current for efficient filtering, increase the fundamental voltage gain to ensure the effective dc voltage utilization and to reduce switching loss to improve the efficiency scenario of the converter. High frequency phase disposed carrier signals are utilized for the modulation with the proposed signal. The suggested modulation scheme is applied to 5-level and 11-level cascaded H-bridge converter to demonstrate the claimed performance over other existing modulation methods. All the simulation works are done in MATLAB/Simulink environment.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124531123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bangladesh without any doubt is faced with the same set of challenges as the energy sources continue to deplete. However, Renewable energy sources continue to be the most easily available and suitable alternative. As a number of natural gas reserves continue to decrease, amount of power generated from renewable energy sources has to be increased. In this work, we present a complete analysis of current energy resources and their usage condition in Bangladesh. A projection is made from the current condition to predict the possible energy scarcity in near future. Looking at the current situation Bangladesh finds itself in a desperate situation to address future power generation challenges near the year 2050. Here a possible solution to this intimidating challenge through renewable energy sources is represented and their possible implications are also discussed. A cost analysis and relative challenges to implement that technology are also investigated with greater details.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121018753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
