Low frequency transformers are heavy in weight and volume. On the contrary medium or high frequency transformers are light in weight and volume. The latest developed magnetic materials and switching devices lead to the application of medium frequency transformers in transmission networks. Transformers designed for medium frequency can also be used as an isolator between converter circuit of renewable sources and the grid connected network. In this paper, a medium frequency toroidal core multi-winding transformer (MWT) is designed and simulated in COMSOL multiphysics environment and the core loss for different amorphous materials are analyzed. Results are presented in this paper. It is recommended that the analysis of core materials for medium frequency applications will play an important role for the selection of efficient core materials for medium or high frequency transformers.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131320782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to EMG, voice recognition method can also be convenient and applicable in specific situations. In this article, a pragmatic and cost effective method of constructing a prosthetic arm using the mentioned two different signals is presented. Post-filtering was performed on the EMG signal and necessary features were extracted and evaluated while the voice input was processed by the specific Android application. The developed prosthetic arm has been able to perform standard tasks such as extension and grabbing things that are out of reach with appreciable success. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the performance and user-friendliness of the developed arm and the results suggest that this prosthetic arm has the potential to assist in the day-to-day activities of persons with disabilities or below-elbow amputees.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126993376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of this work is to simulate the design an all optical Half-Adder (HA) and a Half Subtractor (HS) as well as to compare the simulated data with the currently published models. Previously implemented optical gates used semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) and other methods of modulation had results with less efficiency than HNLF. The better performance of HNLF is largely due to the fact that it is a passive device having a low noise ratio. This research article emphasizes on design and implementation of HA and HS at high bit rates. The Sum and Carry output spectrum for both HA and HS have been analyzed and the output power and extinction ratios for corresponding logic results have been measured. The maximum delays between the inputs have been calculated for the HA's optimum bit rate. This research article presents the successful operation of the logic gates at a maximum bit rate of 30 Gbps.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126775391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper Shapley value algorithm has been applied for dynamic network where both authorized and unauthorized users can utilize the radio frequency at the same time with maximum throughput without interfering the authorized users. The allocation process is allowed only when a spectrum has been requested and idle spectrum is present in the network. Fair policy in the spectrum for the unauthorized users has been ensured with a universal price function. The proposed system is designed on the basis of computer vision tools and deep supervised machine learning model. The system has three modules: license plate detection, character segmentation and recognition of the characters of the License Plate (LP). The goal of detection is to localize the plate area from the vehicle image and to crop region of interest (LP). It is executed by applying following process: preprocessing the image, conversion to binary image, contour detection and filtering the contours to get the LP's character contours, tilt correction and cropping the plate area from the image. Then, the cropped LP is segmented to extract the characters from the plate. Finally, the recognition step classifies the characters by means of deep convolution neural network where the features of the character are crafted and learned by the convolution layers of the networks. The system is implemented in Python OpenCV environment for offline car license plates images which are taken in different illuminations, road scenarios and colored cars. The system performance is evaluated in terms of detection rate, segmentation rate, recognition rate and execution time. The results illustrate that the performance of the system is remarkable.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"138 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114093528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Human Computer Interaction technology enable people to interact with computer machine using hand gestures. Common sign languages use separate hand signals to communicate different decimals. Recent developments in Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) have opened the door to recognize and classify this visual form of gestures more accurately. In this paper, a layer-wise optimized neural network architecture is proposed where batch normalization contributes to faster convergence of training, and introduction of dropout technique mitigates data overfitting. Batch normalization forces each training batch toward zero mean and unit variance, leading to improved flow of gradients through the model and convergence in shorter time. Dropout forces neurons of neural network to regularize, resulting in reduced overfitting. A constructed numerical hand gesture data set is used for validating the claims based on American Sign Language system. The proposed model is shown to surpass other methods in classifying these numerical hand signs successfully.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121445019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sea surface temperature (SST) is an important variable for study of earth's climate system and has great influence over the Tropical Glaciers. The Santa River Basin in the Peruvian Andean Mountain Range is located at the most extensive network of tropical glaciers in South America and are sensitive indicators of climate evolution. In this study, the data products MYD28M and MOD10A1 from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer sensor (MODIS) for satellites Terra and Aqua are used to determined SST and snow cover variation (SCV). Principal Component Analysis, Histogram Analysis, filtering and Wavelet Analysis are used for processing and analysis of data. The results of SST and SCV, during the period 2003–2016, show anomalies with similar periods and a high correlation around of 2.9 years which demonstrates its relation to El Niño phenomenon.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122068893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the context of Bangladesh, among multifarious sources of renewables (solar, wind, biomass, tidal and wave power and ocean thermal energy) harnessing of energy from ocean tides, that cogitates both kinetic and potential energy, is a promising option. The former deals with tidal current energy conversion technologies while the latter concept focuses on the tidal barrage approach-similar to hydropower technique. This paper presents an assessment of the potential of tidal barrage technology through the development of a laboratory scale prototype model. The prototype energy extractor is constructed to study and verify the one-way generation method of tidal barrage technology. The model is scaled down to actual generation. A laboratory flume is used to generate a hydraulic head across a sluice gate, considering the upstream as basin side and downstream as the seaside. Water on the basin side is retained by the sluice, creating maximum head difference and thereby generates electricity while traversing through the turbine and rotating the generator. The generated power in the downstream end is measured by an ammeter. The amount of energy generated through the turbine is then compared to the theoretical energy generation. The findings of this study are discussed in relation to the prospects of tidal potential energy and identifies this technology as a preferable option for electricity generation in the suitable locations of the Bay of Bengal.","PeriodicalId":411099,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"196 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123223856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
