These include elements of varying size and schematicity, ranging from single morphemes, through words, phrases, partially-filled sequences, to entirely schematic grammatical patterns. Following cognitive-linguistic usage-based models, it is assumed that language learning takes place by observing examples of use found in the input and whose elements must be memorised. Given the nature of linguistic use and the deluge of information to which the learner is exposed at any moment, learning is highly unlikely to involve only a continuous focus of consciousness. Thus, the present contribution argues against the main claims of Richard Schmidt’s Noticing Hypothesis, under which learning is only possible when consciously attending to input elements. On the contrary, the development of proficiency is based mainly on unconscious learning mechanisms. The acquisition of phraseological compounds is particularly dependent on incidental learning.","PeriodicalId":41095,"journal":{"name":"Roczniki Humanistyczne","volume":"64 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139239055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(2016). The investigation is based on two small-scale studies. Study 1 is a diagnosis of teacher (N1 = 21) and student (N2 = 50) attitudes to online and blended classes at one Polish university. Study 2 is design-based. It describes several micro-innovations following the guidelines for education re-imagined (Fullan et al., 2020) and presents student (N3 = 23) attitudes to it.","PeriodicalId":41095,"journal":{"name":"Roczniki Humanistyczne","volume":"68 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139238972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The relationship between peer tutoring and the affective domain of learning has received little or no attention. The period of emergency remote instruction triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic elevated the significance of social and emotional learning needs. The restoration of on-campus classes exemplified this need even stronger as students returned to classrooms being more socially and emotionally vulnerable than before. The present study contributes to the ongoing discussion over the significance of peer tutoring as a student-led instructional strategy that directly addresses students’ social-emotional learning needs. By comparing the effects of online reciprocal peer tutoring on English department students’ cognitive and social-emotional development under remote and blended course delivery, this study provides valuable insights into the benefits of reciprocal peer tutoring in different learning environments. The findings highlight the positive impact of online reciprocal peer tutoring on students’ emotions, motivation, self-efficacy, and knowledge gains, as well as the importance of peer support and collaborative learning in improving classroom dynamics and student involvement. These results suggest that reciprocal peer tutoring can be a valuable addition to university courses, especially in the current context of increased demand for online and blended learning opportunities.","PeriodicalId":41095,"journal":{"name":"Roczniki Humanistyczne","volume":"2 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139242121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article presents an overview of the major theoretical issues related to the linguistic concept of euphemisms and their use in everyday situations during the years of the pandemic. The data for this study were collected through an online questionnaire administered in December 2022. This stage of the research was preceded by a close examination of three internet blogs in terms of COVID-related euphemistic vocabulary. The discussion of the findings is intended to reveal the students’ perspective on the use of euphemisms, including the reasons for their use and the types of situations where such language forms are employed. The results are expected to shed some light on the possible impact that euphemistic language might have on student-teacher interactions. Another significant aspect addressed in this paper is the relationship between euphemisms and language creativity.","PeriodicalId":41095,"journal":{"name":"Roczniki Humanistyczne","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139238766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It will be argued that in ELTE (English Language Teacher Education), the use of corpus-based approaches offers a wide range of possibilities which enable and promote reflection, encourage the sharing of best practice and foster data-driven practice procedures. The analytical core of the paper focuses on two examples of integrating corpora into ELTE—CLCA, an amalgamation of corpus linguistics and conversational analysis, and SETTVEO, a combination of the SETT (Self-Evaluation of Teacher Talk) framework and the VEO (Video Enhanced Observation) app. The former provides insights into enhanced understandings of spoken interaction and its relationship with learning. The latter aids teachers in developing their classroom interactional competence by collecting reflective and interactional data so as to establish and evaluate a dialogic and collaborative approach to reflective practice.","PeriodicalId":41095,"journal":{"name":"Roczniki Humanistyczne","volume":"2001 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139239252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on material related to passive voice structures. The material used comes from English and Polish language corpora (British National Corpus, Narodowy Korpus Języka Polskiego and one parallel corpus, Paralela). The students are taught how to use language corpora to improve their mastery of a foreign language, alongside gaining additional knowledge and skills in using passive voice structures. We place particular stress on the differences in using passive voice structures in English and Polish. Guidelines for gender-inclusive language recommend replacing gender-specific job titles, such as fireman/firewoman, with gender-neutral nouns, i.e. firefighter. By investigating examples gleaned from the Corpus of Contemporary American English and the British National Corpus, learners of English can identify the conditions under which gender-specific forms may be employed. They can also see which type of gender-marked forms occurs more commonly in each of those corpora (e.g., woman driver or female driver). A further online corpus known as Global Web-Based English can be used with advanced L2 learners of English as a source of data indicating different attitudes towards gender-marked forms in native and non-native varieties of English, as can be shown for occupational terms with the modifier lady.","PeriodicalId":41095,"journal":{"name":"Roczniki Humanistyczne","volume":"33 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139241834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The last decades have seen China’s rise to economic prominence, accompanied by the increased influence of the neoliberal ideology, which has been met with a neoconservative response. A new model of the family has thus emerged. It has been imagined as a shelter from the unsettling realities of life under the conditions of the market economy, a private, consuming community managed by women. This paper focuses on the ways of describing the family in the novels by two well-known women writers of the 80 hou generation (authors born in the 1980s): Di An and Yan Ge. The image of the family in their prose has been compared to the private and neoconservative models and to the depictions of the family in the new historical novel.","PeriodicalId":41095,"journal":{"name":"Roczniki Humanistyczne","volume":"44 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139314757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pejda","doi":"10.18290/rh23719.3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18290/rh23719.3","url":null,"abstract":"Daodejing to tekst tradycyjnie przypisywany szkole daoistycznej wczesnej myśli chińskiej. Dominują w nim dwa terminy: dao i de, które pojawiają się w każdej szkole wczesnej myśli chińskiej, w taoizmie jednak kojarzą się z mistycyzmem. Daodejing omawia jedność dao, którą podziela się poprzez nadawanie nazw rzeczom niemogącym przetrwać, ponieważ sama rzeczywistość ciągle się zmienia. Używanie nazw lub języka, który jest nieadekwatny do opisania rzeczywistości dao, tworzy powierzchowny świat społeczny – i za to daoiści obwiniają konfucjańską szkołę myślenia. Głównym celem artykułu jest analiza tej krytyki ethosu konfucjańskiego, jego głównych idei samorozwoju w kontekście społecznym i nabywania umiejętności społecznych, a także dostosowywania się do dao, rozumianego jako tradycje Dawnych Królów i naturalny porządek. Daoiści twierdzą, że nauki konfucjańskie odwracają nas od dao, tworząc pozorną rzeczywistość i moralność, która jest jedynie substytutem niepodzielnej rzeczywistości dao, ponieważ język staje się narzędziem kontroli społecznej. Zamiast naturalnego dao i jego atrybutów – spontaniczności ziran i niedziałania wuwei – pojawia się konfucjańska moralność ren. To jest główną troską autorów Daodejing, którzy nawołują do porzucenia wiedzy, czyli konfucjańskich zasad moralnych, i powrotu do stanu umysłu nowonarodzonego dziecka.","PeriodicalId":41095,"journal":{"name":"Roczniki Humanistyczne","volume":"31 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139314492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
