Also, starting a discussion and give visibility to gentrification in Peru, since there is no recent bibliographic material that registers its peculiarities. For which, through qualitative techniques (semi-structured interviews, direct observation, official documentation review), we examine the displacement and asymmetries of space produced by a private project (Monumental Callao) inside the constitutional province of Callao (Peru), especially its historic center, also known as Barrio Castilla. We study how strategies to destigmatize the area to attract a public with a higher income and expenditure, have institutionalized the exclusion of its original residents. In the context of a city in which the pursuit for the common benefit seems like an absent matter and alien to the hegemonic discourse, the findings show that these strategies have resulted in the expulsion and exclusion of its residents, thus prioritizing consumers and customers instead of citizens with rights. Results show that such strategies have prompted displacement and exclusion of its residents. Not to mention, the project criminalizes social practices, such as street vending around the area, and limits residents from using their neighborhood’s public space. Its legacy in the collective idea of society has been tangible and intangible evidence of the social, technological, and economic development on the region for many centuries, turning it into a geological, industrial, and mining heritage site given its interactions with natural, urban-architectural, cultural and social appropriation contexts. From a methodological point of view, an integral and holistic view of the cultural heritage is proposed, aligned with the essential values associated with the three categories already described. The process has included research and critical examination of multiple primary and documental sources, physical space field surveys, interviews with ex mine workers and older locals, innovation workshops, creation and re-creation of memory and collective ideas of the community and neighbors to create a sense of identity and determine the shared values based on heritage as a resource and commodity that society can embrace. Unity and nature in the cultural figures of the Antarctic Peninsula and surroundings","authors":"Fulvio Rossetti","doi":"10.32995/REV180.NUM-47.(2021).ART-792","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32995/REV180.NUM-47.(2021).ART-792","url":null,"abstract":"This paper studies the history of the Antarctic territory disputed by Argentina, Chile, and the United Kingdom in the context of the processes that culminated in the recent “Edenic” resignification of the white continent: the attribution of positive cultural values to its condition of pristine space, the consequent withdrawal of commercial exploitation activities, the promotion of its preservation and the minimization of any impact. Being a “shared” place links its history to various processes of incorporation into collective imaginaries and national territories with different yearnings moving each country in the framework of actions, reactions, and territorial meanings this paper try to delve into. Regarding a morphological dimension, it is suggested that the wishes of each one was strengthened by integration projects, linked to international competition scenarios, and associated with notions of territorial unity, mostly catalysed by critical historic moments. Regarding its symbolic dimension, it is suggested that territorial cultural values depend on how Antarctic nature has been conceived in different visions of his future that were basically structured in two aspects. One of these is related to the understanding of its pristine status, perceived as a source of resources to extract or \"Eden\" to preserve. Another relates to those who should benefit from it, whether national, international, or global communities. These approaches allow delving into the different stages of the incorporation processes through architecture projects, infrastructure, geopolitical strategies, and cartographies or even novels and photographs.
