Using the 4Cs has enabled the nonprofit's board to create a horizontal instead of vertical structure. The Cs have also been utilized to build a leadership team that can work together to meet the needs of the organization and face challenges. Through classes and workshops given to teachers, parents, grandparents, and caregivers, participants have learned that discouragement is a basis for misbehavior and that an understanding of the 4Cs builds an encouraging family dynamic. Participants also recognize that the Cs have a useful application outside the home. The Cs are an essential element of family meetings, and parents in the programs have shared the transformations that have occurred in their families. Finally, the 4Cs are central to furthering social interest.","PeriodicalId":410014,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Individual Psychology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130723434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deci and Ryan's empirically derived self-determination theory, with basic psychological need theory and intrinsic motivation at its core, provides indirect evidence of the validity of the Crucial Cs framework, which was devised by clinician-educators Bettner and Lew, drawing on the work of Adler and Dreikurs. It is argued that while self-determination theory evolved over 50 years, from vast numbers of studies, and the Crucial Cs from Adlerian theory and practice wisdom, each supports the validity of the other. The authors share their experiences of applying the Crucial Cs to promote understanding and healthy living, in research, and in teaching and supporting undergraduate practitioners, and postgraduate professionals.","PeriodicalId":410014,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Individual Psychology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115207288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to Alfred Adler, there are three life tasks—love, social, and work—in which the individual seeks fulfillment and balance in order to function fully. The challenges exist when individuals transition from one task to another. More specifically, there are particular challenges encountered by individuals in a family during divorce. This case analysis tracks the transition from one task to another during such a time and discusses the effectiveness of a specific Adlerian framework, the Crucial Cs, as it relates to this transition. The goal is to show how a shift in focus can help in healing individuals going through the divorce and the transition of life tasks and roles. The case analysis concludes that such a shift benefits all individuals involved and makes the transition much easier to handle.","PeriodicalId":410014,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Individual Psychology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134134818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article also presents a study that examined the immediate effects of a single 45-minute Adlerian-based group-drumming session on the affective states and social interest among university students. The study included participants (N = 100) from undergraduate and graduate programs from a university in the southeastern United States. General results support the use of an Adlerian group-drumming protocol to improve mood among university students. Results also suggest further inquiry into this protocol as a tool to increase social interest.","PeriodicalId":410014,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Individual Psychology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125925661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
