Given the consolidated place that these literatures occupy in higher education institutions not only in Portuguese-speaking countries, but also in several higher education institutions in the world, we believe that this interview is of great value to all scholars who teach and research Portuguese-speaking African literature, as well as its relations with cultural studies and post-coloniality.","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"26 1","pages":"724-735"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42496587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The narrative takes place in Lorraine, Ohio, also hometown to Morrison. Other biographical elements appear in the narrative, the spatial being of utmost importance to this study. We explore the novel’s houses as spatial elements that add to characters’ subjectivities and embed the underlying theme of class. The narrative, which tells not only the story of Pecola, the protagonist, but gives us a detailed account of the lives of her mother, father, host family and community, starts with a simple description of a house as a place where a family lives and where everything comes together in harmony. This is done through the presentation of a primer which depicts language used in Dick and Jane books, texts historically used to initiate kids in reading. Such reference also implicates the representation of a perfect white suburban family where everyone gets along. Houses, furniture, backyards and other home-related elements foreshadow the unfortunate events to unravel in Pecola’s life along the novel. In terms of their significance in a broader perspective, we grasp that houses are in the novel also to set and depict the families’ background and current conditions in terms of class. Not only do houses help reinforce character traits, they stand as a social criticism to the economic conditions of blacks, also determined by whether their skin is darker or has a lighter shade. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “AQUI ESTA A CASA”: UMA LEITURA DA(S) CASA(S) EM THE BLUEST EYE , DE TONI MORRISON No presente artigo, propomos uma leitura do espaco em The bluest eye , de Toni Morrison, como um mote para o desenvolvimento das personagens. A narrativa se desenrola em Lorraine, Ohio, tambem cidade onde Morrison nasceu. Outros elementos biograficos aparecem na narrativa, o espaco sendo o de maior importância nesse estudo. Exploramos as casas do romance que adicionam a subjetividade das personagens e estao implicadas no tema de classe. A narrativa, que nos conta a historia de Pecola, a protagonista, mas tambem nos da um apanhado detalhado das vidas de sua mae, pai, familia acolhedora e comunidade, comeca com uma simples descricao de uma casa como o lugar em que uma familia vive e tudo se encontra em harmonia. Isso e feito atraves da apresentacao de um primer que apresenta linguagem usada nos livros de Dick and Jane , textos historicamente usados para iniciar criancas na leitura. Tal referencia tambem implica a representacao de uma familia branca e suburbana perfeita, na qual todos se entendem. Casas, mobilia, quintais e outros elementos ligados a moradia prenunciam os eventos tragicos prestes a se desenrolar na vida de Pecola ao longo da narrativa. Em termos de sua significância numa perspectiva mais abrangente, entendemos que as casas estao no romance para determinar as orige","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"26 1","pages":"496-515"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45949549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though such references are worthy of attention due to their being contemporary to the existence of Queen Njinga Mbandi, the historical erasure of her relevance throughout the centuries is also noticeable, perhaps due to the extension of the colonial situation up until 1975. However, this silence was initially interrupted by fictional recreations that highlight Njinga’s leadership and reinforce the resistance aspect of what was already an anticolonial struggle. Nowadays, the Queen’s life has also gained more attention in the academic research of various fields, especially History. In this paper, we emphasize four works of literature that recover the historical figure of the Ndongo Queen: Nzinga Mbandi (1975), by Manuel Pedro Pacavira; A gloriosa familia: o tempo dos flamengos [The Glorious Family: The time of the Flemings] (1997), by Pepetela; A rainha Ginga [Queen Ginga] (2014), by Jose Eduardo Agualusa, and the movie Njinga, rainha de Angola [Njinga, Queen of Angola] (2013), directed by Sergio Graciano. These recreate her life not only in Angola, but also in Central Africa as the resignification of a myth in the anticolonial struggle.","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"26 1","pages":"688-704"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46229205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the first moment, specific relations of the Black Vernacular English are used in details in order to display the resistance of the theme in Morrison’s writing in comparison to the Standard English pattern. The corpus chosen for this article is Beloved , by Toni Morrison, in which the use of African American Vernacular English dialect, studied by Labov among other scholars, is present. The author circumscribes her writing on the civil rights movement recommended by Martin Luther King. Such linguistic characteristics that permeate Morrison’s text are peculiar to a select group of speakers, perpetuated by the segregation established by the white majority, and for being present at the literary materiality it demonstrates its chronological and sociological nature of resistance.","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"26 1","pages":"516-535"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48430302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

El ensayo analiza brevemente el desarrollo historico del Candombe desde su origen como “musica de los negros” hasta su actualidad considerada “musica nacional uruguaya”. Se presenta una breve sinopsis historica del termino candombe, su diferenciacion con el candomble, la organizacion participativa que supone la ejecucion de este, su relacion actual con la sociedad uruguaya en terminos de aceptacion en base a los resultados obtenidos en estudios multidisciplinarios realizados por historiadores, musicologos y antropologos desde inicios del siglo XX. Ese trabajo destaca el origen del candombe desde una perspectiva interna a la comunidad afro donde se visualiza su rol central de resistencia y conservacion de los valores culturales de las distintas naciones africanas llegadas al Rio de la Plata durante el siglo XVIII, regiones donde hoy se localizan Argentina y Uruguay.","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"26 1","pages":"536-551"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44885496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, it seeks to understand the metaphors of the body related to the house, the feeling of estrangement in the walled, hostile city in which she lives, the place of the writing. Although the term “house” is present in her poems – what can suddenly arouse its more concrete and physical contours that already inhabit our imaginary, like its solid walls –, the house can become a certain type of home, which is more aligned with the feeling of being connected to a space, that may or may not be material and still sustain its fluidity. --- Original in Spanish.","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"26 1","pages":"552-573"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44039338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And, in addition, it aims to discuss how this concept of Mbembe helps to understand the representation of the black people realized by Firmina’s text. For Mbembe, «black reason» is linked to the fabrication of images of knowledge and the afro-descendant subject. The hypothesis of this essay is that «black reason» operates as a device responsible for enhancing the understanding of afro-descendant images in the novel Ursula , as exemplified by the trajectories of Tulio, Mae Susana and Antero. If, on the one hand, the book in question chooses to follow the general lines of Brazilian romanticism, when discussing the configuration of the nation and slavery, on the other hand it does so from the paradigms of identity ruled by “black reason”, the black people as subject of actions and discourse.","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"26 1","pages":"654-971"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42368952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, it is proposed to surpass not only the conceptions on what defines African literature of Greek expression beyond the use of the Greek language in which the literary content was produced, but it also seeks to show that the encounters between ethnic groups in Ancient Africa are evident in this literature, as perceived in the “Greek novel”, thus pointing to the exchange between these cultures and how they have become close and sometimes extremely interrelated. However, the historical approaches to literature no longer reveal this imbrication by labeling them as “Greeks” or their authors as “Greeks of”. Faced with a complex context, the central question arises for reflection: to what extent can literature in the so-called Alexandrian/Hellenistic period be considered or labeled only as “Greek”? From this inquiry, we will return to Herodotus and theorists like Maria Regina Cândido and Susan Stephens to unravel the theme.","PeriodicalId":40929,"journal":{"name":"Matraga-Estudos Linguisticos e Literario","volume":"26 1","pages":"616-634"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48201955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
