However, the complex history of this family has not been investigated in detail, despite the fact that Kathe Beutler presented the rare example of a married physician, who was able to reestablish a pediatric practice in her new home country. The following study draws from a wide variety of archival resources and personal documents, to trace the history of the Beutler family through a century of political turmoil. It contributes to the so-far limited knowledge of the life of women doctors before and after forced emigration, exploring Kathe’s experience as a professional, a member of the German Jewish middle-class, a wife and a mother. The Beutler family demonstrates the societal impact on the potential fates and achievements of the members of one family unit, a potential that when realized under conditions of political, economical, and personal support, can result in the highest academic achievements, but a potential that is lost under conditions of prejudice and persecution. The story of Kathe Beutler and her family could not be more relevant than at the present, at a time of the global resurgence of nationalism, displacement, xenophobia and anti-Semitism.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"129 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79575002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I argue that the phenomenological anthropological approach played a crucial role for changes in psychiatry during the late 1950s and early 1960s (the so-called “reform before the reform”, cf. Kersting) and that this approach gave rise to the specific anthropological attitude of German social psychiatry towards mental illness. To show this in detail, I will focus on four key figures of the aforementioned reform: Walter von Baeyer, Heinz Hafner, Caspar Kulenkampff and Karl Peter Kisker. I will first give a short summary of their phenomenological anthropological concepts and then reflect upon the relevance of these concepts for the reform. In the following, I will highlight the critiques made by Erich Wulff, Klaus Dorner and Karl Peter Kisker to further indicate the problematic relation between social psychiatry and anthropological psychiatry. Finally, I will discuss the impact of what I call the anthropological social-psychiatric attitude on the reform of West German psychiatry.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"s1-16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85972736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These interactions were shaped by very different motives, in particular by political opportunism, by moral convictions, and by the loyalty towards colleagues. On the one hand, the attitude of the state actors was strongly influenced by the GDR’s self-understanding as an anti-fascist state as opposed to the Federal Republic, and, on the other hand, by pragmatic considerations and overarching political decisions. These case studies are situated in the context of the current historiography of medicine, and, more broadly, the contemporary entangled history of both German post-war states and the emergence of commemorative cultures in East and West.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89941718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our article reviews both the reception and implementation of this approach in the German-speaking historiography of psychiatry. We analyze the disciplinary genesis of this field of work, present the major research themes and give three examples to illustrate the use of personal narratives, patient files and visual arts. We will then outline a new option to further develop the approach in the sense of a “social history of user experience” drawing on the principles of inclusion and participation.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81225551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the Sabaudian court differed widely from the cardinals’ courts in Rome, both Francesco Alessandri and Marsilio Cagnati display a similar inclination to publish on subjects transcending the field of individual medicine. While Alessandri’s plague treatise is among the first to report reliably on the civic measures of plague policy, Cagnati published on climate, epidemics and astronomy. The physicians’ engagement in a variety of public functions induced them to write on broader topics with which they were professionally confronted. Their writings reflected their social and political status and their involvement in public and political matters. The publications also served to advertise for the authors’ competencies, which were not limited to medical skills. While Alessandri displayed his qualities as an official of the Torinese health board, Cagnati presented himself as a counselor who could advise not only on medicine, but on a variety of subjects.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"57 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73726155","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This refinement of the medical care at court has been prepared and accompanied by the reinforcement of literary activity of court physicians. The academic commitment of Butzow University teachers was characterized by gaining more discursive competence und focused the formation of midwifes, epidemic control, public health (food hygiene), and personal hygiene and was in a special way enhanced and challenged by the existence of the second residence in Ludwigslust whereby first the discursive competence figured, less the pragmatic question to translate the new medical requirements into specific administration or public institutions.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"49 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89906318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Causes of the disease (which befell the leader Leutharis in an abominable kind of „rabies“) were numerous: wrong diatetics, air-pollution etc. But, Agathias emphasized, the barbarian insults should be regarded as the “real” cause. The historian mixed up different causes, a method which has to be regarded in its context. The deployment of medical and theological concepts was related to the literary genre, and imitation of classical literature (“mimesis”) played here a crucial role. Plague was explained in two ways: on the one hand as being carried by the wandering armies (Agathias’ view). On the other hand, plague itself could be regarded as moving: like a diligent tax collector, plague seemed to move through imperial mainland and islands, taking its toll of death. Whereas epidemics of barbarian troops could be explained conventionally by medical and theological concepts, the great “Justinianic” plague could only be comprehended from unconventional points of view. Description took the place of explanation.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81941067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
