In contrast, this paper highlights the interactions of court medicine with developments outside of the palace, by focusing on the case of the early modern Russian court medical department, which had a wide-range of extra-courtly duties. Western European medical practitioners working at the Russian court maintained contacts with other courts, were involved in military medicine, conducted plague autopsies, regulated the medical market, provided expert testimony in witchcraft trials, and wrote self-help medical texts for a wide range of Russians. The Russian court was not unique: in each of these areas, Russia echoed developments elsewhere in Europe. The uniqueness of the Russian case is rather in the huge breadth of these activities, making Russian court medicine a major part of early modern Russia’s medical world.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90529624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One reason for this was that previous therapeutic approaches, which were primarily based on the hospitalization of those affected, did not fit the high therapeutic potential of the „miracle drug“ insulin. Additionally caused by an overall increase of diabetes cases and an increased life expectancy of diabetics, therapeutics shifted their focus on the individual responsibility of patients to treat themselves under medical supervision. Prescribed technologies of the self not only reconstituted diabetes therapy: diabetic patients now produced new knowledge about themselves through the daily execution of these self-techniques. Thus, diabetic patients became therapeutic subjects actively involved in the making of medical knowledge.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82745838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Focusing on account books, the paper examines medical personnel in order to identify and describe ‘medical practitioners’ at court in Bavaria from 1550 to 1750. What were their numbers, modes of employment and payment? What qualified physicians for a position at court? And what roles did they play in addition to offering medical treatments and therapeutic practices? Using the example of Dr. Stefano Simeoni, personal physician and intimate friend of the Bavarian electress, the paper examines whether employment at court paid off for early modern physicians and which factors could determine the success or failure of a medical career at court.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"47 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80929983","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The evolution of her pioneering efforts is traced against a backdrop of epidemics, post-war nation-building and the emergence of an international public health episteme. The recovery of these neglected early years of Syrkin-Binsztejnowa’s medical career sheds new light on her social activism in the Warsaw Ghetto long marginalized in Holocaust historiography. The author contrasts Syrkin-Binsztejnowa’s interwar work to her efforts coordinating public health programs and the fight against epidemics under Nazi occupation, which were largely undermined by policies of racial persecution and mass murder.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79804186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, EbM has established itself first and successfully as evidence-based health care, i. e. above the clinical level and within the normative context of Germany’s social law. The distance between EbM and clinic, perceptible from the beginning, has seemingly not much changed. EbM had more influence on clinical jargon than clinical practice. This is on the one hand a result of its introduction „top down“ and on the other of a scientific tradition of German clinical medicine. Until the 1980ies the introduction of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods has been relying (and actually relies again) stronger on biomedical deductions than empirical testing. An additional factor are conflicts between EbM and the increasing economisation of the clinic. Lastly, developments within EbM itself lead to alienation from the clinic, its self-concept, pragmatic logic, and practices.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"54 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80144874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This message was brought forward in a recent, widely discussed paper in the British Medical Journal published in 1014 by prominent representatives of the EBM-movement itself. The authors also present a way out of the crisis: a return to the original founding principles of EBM. They sketch an image of both a golden past and a golden future of real evidence-based medicine that we, as historians, find rather problematic. We therefore aim to inform the current debate about the crisis of EBM historically by describing four ways in which EBM has evolved in the past 25 years.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90448566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study discusses in detail the different motives provoking its foundation against the background of the political developments and those specific to diaconia. In addition, it considers the working focus of its executive board and its first annual meetings, including the role played by the AGCA on the occasion of the political turn in 1989. It becomes apparent that the Association despite its specificities (Christian-diaconical self-image, its integration in an international movement) showed conflicts and behavioural patterns that were typical for the physicians of the GDR in the interplay between employers, politics and its self-image.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81761368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 1952, this reformatory was converted into a closed venereology ward, which existed until 1990. The initial legal foundations were the Orders 25, 30 and 271 of the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD) and since 1961, the “Regulation for the prevention and control of venereal diseases”. Approximately 5,000 patient records from these facilities can be found in the municipal archive in Leipzig. Of these, we analyzed 1,038 records. Between 1946 and 1961, the commitments of patients to these institutions corresponded with the legal specifications of the SMAD-Orders. Since 1961, the majority of the commitment procedures violated the multi-stage commitment instruction prescribed in the “Regulation for the prevention and control of venereal diseases”.","PeriodicalId":40892,"journal":{"name":"Medizinhistorisches Journal","volume":"21 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78411666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
