In particular, U-bent fiber optic sensors (FOS) have been reported to be efficient for chemical and biosensing applications. Experimental investigations show that the U-bent FOS are highly sensitive, when the bend diameter is less than 5 times the fiber core diameter. However, the phenomenon behind high RI sensitivity is yet to be fully understood. So far, geometric effects alone have been considered to significantly contribute to medium-sensitive refractive losses. In this work, a simple ray optics model is developed to evaluate the light propagation and attenuation in a U-bent FOS. These numerical simulations point to a significant contribution from modified core RI profile as result of bend induced inhomogeneity in the material towards high sensitivity of acutely bent probes.","PeriodicalId":405874,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE SENSORS","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128273702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And then the relationship between multi-ring electrodes allocation and tuning ability is derived. Using the derived theory, a electrode allocation suggestion will be given in design requirements for tuning ability. The simulation results of tuning coincides with the theoretical results, which indicates the feasibility of the theory. This theory applies to not only honeycomb-like resonator gyroscopes but also other kinds of gyroscopes with the same electrodes allocation. Said oscillations will trigger capillary waves on the surface of the actuated liquid. We provide finite element simulations as well as an analysis of the acting inertial and surface tension forces. It was found that droplet height and droplet contact angle (CA) tend to move in an oscillatory motion and are therefore affected by superposed oscillation frequencies, if the volume of the oscillating droplet is big enough and the Weber number is sufficiently high. We present limiting values for the droplet size, for a material property measurement method proposed earlier, which is based on frequency and oscillation decay behavior.","PeriodicalId":405874,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE SENSORS","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128641304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, we investigate the effect of accelerated ageing and repeated open/close operations on the connectors' polarization extinction ratio (PER) and insertion loss between -40 and 80°C and determine the influence on sensor accuracy. The results show that PM connectors (FC/PC type with reduced mechanical tolerances for high PER) exhibit good repeatability and largely preserve their performance over extended periods of ageing. Nevertheless, the observed long-term changes in the temperature dependence of the PER can restrict the usability of these components in high-end sensor applications and call for alternative solutions.","PeriodicalId":405874,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE SENSORS","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127474924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, irrigation activities can be optimized by collecting soil conditions using soil sensors to ensure water resource sustainability. While there are commercialized soil-monitoring systems, their cost is often too high for large-scale implementation. To guarantee water resource sustainability and food supply through irrigation optimization, large-scale deployments of soil sensors are required. Therefore, in this study, a cost-efficient soil monitoring device that employs capacitive touch sensing and printed electronics was developed. The target price of the proposed system that includes a sensor probe and a gateway is $1000. This is about three times cheaper than the commercially available systems and it is reasonably accurate. In India, irrigation optimization is essential to mitigate severe drought and water shortage caused by climate changes. Thus, to verify the usability of the proposed probes for irrigation management in a real farm field, the probes were tested in a maize field in Hyderabad. The deployed probes successfully detected soil moisture changes due to precipitation and irrigation, which is useful for irrigation optimization.","PeriodicalId":405874,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE SENSORS","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122377576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the composite of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles is prepared and used as a gas sensing material. The response of the sensor to ethanol vapor is studied at room temperature with different concentrations of the target gas and suspension concentrations of ZnO/rGO. The results show that ZnO/rGO composite is very sensitive to the ethanol vapor and the sensitivity can be increased greatly by heating the ZnO/rGO composite with microwave.","PeriodicalId":405874,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE SENSORS","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132139229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It takes the advantage of correlation between the consecutive pixels and reduces the total number of pixels to be read. The discarded pixels are interpolated on-chip using the proposed interpolation circuit. This reduces the total number of A/D conversions and hence results in power saving. The algorithm is verified for standard Lena image and about 5 dB better PSNR is observed for 20%- 90% compression, as compared to the existing techniques. Moreover, a promising performance is achieved on thermal image applications. The circuit is designed and simulated in AMS 350 nm OPTO process. For 57% compression, about 45% power saving in readout of the image sensor is observed.","PeriodicalId":405874,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE SENSORS","volume":"10 30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130885861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various camera and wearable sensor-based human recognition systems have been developed; however, they are either not privacy protective or not practical for longterm monitoring. In this paper, we present a non-intrusive indoor human recognition system using distributed sensors and Genetic algorithm (GA) based neural network. Pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensors are chosen using masks with random sampling windows to sense the human body thermal variations. The time domain statistical features are extracted to train classification algorithm in order to recognize human motion. Total of 200 samples are collected from volunteers performing two actions, i.e., walking normal and abnormally. A number of classification algorithms have been trained to recognize human motion. The outcome indicates that the QFAM-GA method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods, such as KNN, SVM, CART, NB and Fuzzy Min-Max.","PeriodicalId":405874,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE SENSORS","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130401418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This system uses distributed infrared sensors to capture human motion information and aims at representing complex activity scenarios with as little amount of data as possible. Therefore, a set of binary sampling masks are designed to modulate the fields of view (FoV) of sensors and to reduce the amount of measurement data without losing the major features of the target information. The spatial relation between two adjacent sensors is investigated to acquire 3d information with the maximum efficiency. In this work, the main contributions include two parts: (1) design the optimal deployment of distributed sensors and (2) learn the structure of sampling masks by using the policy gradient (PG) based reinforcement learning scheme. Experiment results show that the the proposed system can increase the sensing efficiency and improve the performance of activity recognition.","PeriodicalId":405874,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE SENSORS","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130493843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This possibility has enabled tracking and data fusion with multiple airborne platforms. The addition of multiple airborne sensors allows for more robust tracking that is less susceptible to clutter and track proliferation. This paper demonstrates the air-to-ground tracking capabilities of two airborne sensors following a moving ground target using the centralized fusion Extended Kalman Filter and Probabilistic Data Association Filter implemented in the Python library pystemlib. The result of adding multiple airborne sensors is a reduced state estimation error and more robust target state predictions evidenced by a reduced root-mean-square error and smaller area of probabilities. A validation of this approach is demonstrated with real data.","PeriodicalId":405874,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE SENSORS","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127961205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
