Using data and statistics on the pandemic era in the Philippines and around the world, in combination with a social realist contextualization of the said history-inspired yet fantasy-imbued film series, this short article weaves numbers and stories into contemporary reflections on how the reel helps explain, inform, and even shape the real, through humankind’s dual role as not-so-passive viewers of the reel and as dynamic actors or subjects who are capable shapers of the real.","PeriodicalId":40520,"journal":{"name":"Plaridel","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77053536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is common sense to think that Bakhtin, the philosopher of dialogism, would be sympathetic to the drama form in which dialogues are the most natural mode of expression. Instead, Bakhtin argues that the monological selection of languages in drama does not allow the dialogic interaction of different registers. Second, drama, for upholding its unity of plot, cannot allow its characters to abide by a truly multi-level dialogic engagement. However, this act is especially performed in the novel by the inter-animation of the narrator’s all-encompassing language and the language of the characters. Against this, this study brings to the fore the historical premisesof Bakhtin’s reservations against the dramatic form. Recognizing the merits of Bakhtin’s philosophy of literature and language, two episodes from AmaravathikiKathayen, a Hindi language-based teledrama series,areanalyzedto place them before the global audiences as well as to ascertain the relevance of Bakhtin’s poetics across the genres. Above all, a return to dialogism as a critical inquiry is important to promote the values of plurality, dialogue, and peaceful co-existence.","PeriodicalId":40520,"journal":{"name":"Plaridel","volume":"90 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74959880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the recent past, the concept of data journalism struck the chords of major news media houses across the globe. Data journalism is an evolving form of storytelling, where journalist works with data, data analytics software, and visualize data to narrate their news stories. In India, over the years, many academic institutions started offering certificate, diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes in journalism and communication-related fields. Currently, academic curricula and journalism education are strengthened with conventional journalism theories and practices. Due to the arrival of data journalism, modern tools, and techniques, journalism pedagogy faces a relatively large knowledge gap. This research article is an outcome of exploratory research that examined 155 academic institutions by scrutinizing the communication curriculum offered across India and suggests the need-based syllabi in consultation with academic and industrial experts, which entails data journalism as an empowering element for the current and next-generation journalists.","PeriodicalId":40520,"journal":{"name":"Plaridel","volume":"44 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86830038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies have explored digital dialogic communication in different organizational contexts; however, there is a paucity of studies that focus on dialogic communication in public institutions. This current study extends the investigation of online relationship building by exploring how a state college uses Facebook to facilitate dialogic communication with stakeholders. Through quantitative content analysis and key informant interviews, a complete enumeration of Facebook posts from January to December 2020 examined the use of dialogic features within the Facebook profile as well as in-depth interviews with the directors, office heads, and stakeholders. Results showed that the state college used a variety of dialogic internet principles on Facebook. Yet, one-way strategies were still more commonly used. The principle of conservation of visitors and organizational engagement for creating an online dialogue enhances public engagement outcomes of users’ reactions, likes, shares, and comments. Moreover, findings from qualitative data demonstrate that a state college relied on social media more to disseminate information rather than a dialogic and interactive medium for governance.","PeriodicalId":40520,"journal":{"name":"Plaridel","volume":"52 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78295176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the Indonesian youth community’s applied online interventions are explored and evaluated through a mixed-method approach, using a qualitative case study and visual content analysis. The authors conducted semi-structured interviews and analyzed visual content outputs, focusing on the social media strategy enacted to create counter-radicalization narratives, and measuring social media engagement rates as a means of evaluating that strategy. This paper extends existing counter-radicalization studies by adding insights on how youth community-based social media initiatives could contribute as a non-coercive approach in combating radicalization.","PeriodicalId":40520,"journal":{"name":"Plaridel","volume":"54 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83826877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It traces the history of the radio under the College of Development Communication (UPLB-DevCom) that started in 1964. It tells the story of how the College of Agriculture Department of Agricultural Information and Communication evolved into the Institute of Development Communication making the UPLB history its backdrop. From UPCA, UPLB metamorphosed during the critical politic al events that culminated in 1972 when martial law was imposed in the Philippines. Witnesses to these unfolding events were the students who have been training in the field of communication and broadcasting. The campus and the communities within the reach of the DZLB radio have served as their laboratories. Through the School-on-Air and other programs, knowledge and information were broadcasted to the DLZB listeners who are farmers, housewives, out-of-school youth and students with the end in view of helping them raise their agricultural produce and eventually increase their income and improve the people’s quality of living. The UPLB-DevCom also plans to have an online television-radio to expand and increase their reach among their listeners and viewers inside and outside of the UPLB campus.","PeriodicalId":40520,"journal":{"name":"Plaridel","volume":"122 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84756124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
