This study aims to determine whether there is a difference in MPA among Music majors students in Spain and if there is a variation depending on the study center to which they belong. This research, which can be considered as the first in Spain with these characteristics, analyses the differences in both MPA and its relationship with other psychological constructs (optimism, self-efficacy, achievement motivation and sensitivity to reward and punishment). The sample consists of 482 students from five centers, obtained from a sample availability criteria. For the evaluation of the different psychological constructs has been used a questionnaire ad hoc specially designed for measuring anxiety and the other constructs mentioned above. After the quantitative treatment of the data, it is found that MPA is present in these Spanish music students. In addition to the MPA, statistically significant differences (p<0.05) in the different constructs were found.","PeriodicalId":40474,"journal":{"name":"Revista Internacional de Educacion Musical","volume":"4 1","pages":"13 - 24"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12967/RIEM-2016-4-p013-024","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66540631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results of this study show that the change of the “Major Instructor” was crucial for improving communication and quality of musical education services. However, since the beginning of the program has prevailed an ambiguity in the establishment and communication purposes, without risks of it provided. There is also a need to strengthen the trainers training on the teaching-learning process, given the constraints of the professional context in the region.","PeriodicalId":40474,"journal":{"name":"Revista Internacional de Educacion Musical","volume":"4 1","pages":"61 - 73"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12967/RIEM-2016-4-p061-073","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66540726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An overwhelming majority of these programs across the USA are centered in underserved communities where access to instrumental music training would otherwise be sparse. Most often, this is due to budget cuts partially or completely being wiped off from school curricula, or the financial cost associated with instrumental lessons. These programs, often free of cost to families, consist of musical training several days a week in small and large group classes, and claim to promote social change amongst these children's lives. It is of importance to carefully study if, and how, these young musicians believe their lives are transforming through participation in these El Sistema-inspired programs, and if in fact, social change is occurring. This article reports on a multiple case study which sought to dive deeper into the lives of two children taking part in one El Sistema-inspired orchestral program located in Los Angeles, California. The study focused on the influence and impact this program has had on the lives of students, the exploration and formation of their beliefs surrounding musical learning, as well as experiences they share both as individuals and members of the orchestra.","PeriodicalId":40474,"journal":{"name":"Revista Internacional de Educacion Musical","volume":"4 1","pages":"75 - 84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12967/RIEM-2016-4-p075-084","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66540776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the many years of academic development linked to the search for autonomy in individual study, which accompanies the performer for life, point to the need to assess the role played by motivation in these types of teaching. This article emphasizes that music students require responses and objectives for adequate self-motivation. At the same time, various strategies are presented that can assist teachers in the preparation and development of the instrumental class as well as other topics that concern students in the realization of their individual practice. All of the strategies have been taken from recent perspectives on motivation towards learning in general education, establishing relevant relations and their possible application in the field of instrumental practice. In conclusion, the article is based on the idea that a motivated student will reach greater musical achievements which will result in professional performance of greater quality.","PeriodicalId":40474,"journal":{"name":"Revista Internacional de Educacion Musical","volume":"4 1","pages":"25 - 33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12967/RIEM-2016-4-p025-033","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66540742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Created from Manuela's sociological portrait, this analysis stands in the crossing between Lahire's dispositional theory and an idea of education that emerges from Dewey's Pragmatism as well as from some authors connected with Critical Pedagogy. The portrait is therefore read in a triangle that defines itself from these two lines, and is analyzed through the concept of “sustainability” (Mota & Figueiredo, 2012). This discussion raises some problematic questions about the transitional moment that certain young musicians may cross when they leave the project Orquestra Geração to join other formal educational contexts connected with music education. In the end, some possible directions to overcome the problems that have emerged in the discussion section will be presented.","PeriodicalId":40474,"journal":{"name":"Revista Internacional de Educacion Musical","volume":"4 1","pages":"103 - 95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12967/RIEM-2016-4-p095-103","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66541040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study examines the perceived features of the inclusive environment of the orchestra and the processes that mediated the diversity of the ensemble and which were significant in assisting the participants to achieve a high level of musical cohesiveness. In particular, it examines the features of pedagogy, pastoral care and performance during the residential orchestral course. NOFA's main experience happens during a four-day summer residential course, which has intensive rehearsal schedules, sectional work and whole orchestra, culminating in a final concert. This case study draws information from an ethnographic perspective through observations, reflections as a participant observer, focus groups and interviews. Findings suggested that the pedagogy was focused in the group as a whole, promoted collaboration between all involved and fostered motivation for personal mastery in order to support a collective effort. Pastoral care features such as care, safety, structure and freedom, represented a familylike world. Participants felt, excited, nervous and proud during the performance, which had a high level of musical cohesiveness as a perceived result of the collective energy made from individual effort.","PeriodicalId":40474,"journal":{"name":"Revista Internacional de Educacion Musical","volume":"4 1","pages":"85 - 94"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12967/RIEM-2016-4-p085-094","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66540841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, it provides a conceptual approach and describes different theoretical perspectives about professional competences. Secondly, theoretical proposals and empirical studies that have been considered relevant in relation to the professional competences of music teachers are reviewed. Thirdly, the main results of two studies that are part of a larger research that analysed the professional profile of Primary and Secondary Education music teachers are presented. These studies were designed to identify the desirable competences for Primary and Secondary Education music teachers, and collect the opinions of a sample of Catalan music teachers about competences needed for a successful practice, respectively. The article ends with a reflection on the strengths and limitations of the competence approach as a perspective to define the professional profile of teachers.","PeriodicalId":40474,"journal":{"name":"Revista Internacional de Educacion Musical","volume":"3 1","pages":"11 - 21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2015-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.12967/RIEM-2015-3-p011-021","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66539642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
